    Why would Pickett be "raw" ?  He's not new to the code.  His skills look exquisite and I'm sure he's had a footy in his hand since he was a toddler.

    His endurance may not be up to scratch and he may serve an apprenticeship at Casey, but why is he likely to be raw ?

    Poor choice of adjective, substitute whatever you like that means lack of endurance, lack familiarity with the game plan, weighing 71kgs and possible lack of confidence to bring the same crash and bash against AFL players that he does to kids.

    Gets to the right spots, can win the ball, is quick with his skills and has the right kind of quick agility to tackle or evade tackles.

    He didn’t get much of the ball on debut (in an awful team effort) but his tackling was easily sharp enough.

    You mean a first year player. 

    Some adapt quicker than others.

    Funny how we see things differently. I thought he looked out of his depth at AFL level.

    Think Pickett will quickly pass him...probably by the first game.

    With Chandler I'm sure the club would tell him to train hard so he can play round 1 but reality is Pickett is the front runner for the small forward spot.

    When picking a team we seem to aim for 7 defenders and 7 forwards (3 tall, 4 medium/small). Obviously Gawn plays and I reckon the right mix of midfielders would be 4 inside, 3 outside. On that basis...

    Best 22 (assuming no injuries whatsoever) 

    Defenders: May, Lever, O.McDonald, Hibberd, Jetta, Salem, Kolodashnij

    Midfielders: Gawn (r), Viney, Harmes, Brayshaw, Oliver, Bennell, Tomlinson, Langdon

    Forwards: T.McDonald, Weideman, Petty, Melksham, Petracca, Fritsch, Pickett

    I think this pre season is going to be the most competitive we will have seen for many a long year. Assuming our squad is fit, the competition for places in the team will be immense. The selectors must be wetting themselves with excitement, not only at having to choose, but also knowing that if they make a mistake with a player, there are at least 2 players to take his place. Our list is finally looking strong. So if all are fit and firing (in other words a fantasy 22), I’d go for:

    Jetta OMac Lever

    Smith May Hibbert

    Langdon Oliver Salem

    AVB TMac Petracca

    Pickett Weid Fritsch

    Gawn Bradshaw Viney

    INT Harmes Tomlinson Petty Bennell

    Apologies to: Melksham Jones Hannah Hunt Hore Pruess KK Sparrow Dunkley Baker Lockhart Jackson , But all I can say is perform so the selectors have to pick you.

    In my opinion i don't think the best will necessarily, even if fit enough to get picked, will play. The season is too hard and too long. I would like to know how many players in an AFL squad actually play all the games? Who gets paced in and who gets nursed like Tigers and who peaks when. So if your/ we are not in the know, you're not going to know.

    I like to think of myself as having a reasonable insight into footy with a pretty good understanding of pros and cons of players on the MFC list.

    I can't recall a time when it was harder to pick a best 22. Poor form and injury in 2018, new arrivals, a few favorites entering the twilight and a bunch of youngsters with barely tapped potential contribute to this.

    There will be bolters and sliders that no one will expect. 

    It will be fascinating year.

    I like your 22 here, mate, but I'd have Vandenberg ahead of Jones on the bench. I reckon this will happen across the season naturally and by the end of it, if we're playing well, I doubt Jones is in the 22.

    It is too early for me to do a proper 22 without seeing how the new recruits look. In saying this, my main thoughts are:

    • Jones should play a high half back role.
    • Vandenberg is first picked wingman if fit.
    • Smith should be played in the forward line, although he would need to earn his spot in the 22.
    • Hunt should be played in the forward line, although he would need to earn his spot in the 22.
    • Jetta will need to win his spot.
    • Petty, Weideman and Jackson will be fighting to partner with Tom McDonald up forward. Petty or Weideman could also fight for a spot at full back instead of Oscar McDonald.
    • I cannot see spots for both Hore and Lever.
    • Harmes should play in the midfield.

    For the first time in a long time it looks like we have genuine cover for 2-3 injuries on each line before it becomes a significant problem. Combined with so few pre-season surgeries and the Burgess factor there is genuine reason for hope in 2020 IMO

    Melksham was hampered by injury this year. Assuming he’s good to go next season, not fielding him would be a mite foolish and kinda disrespectful.

    agree with all you say especially J Hunt. He is in my Team...  BUT have to disagree with you on Lever. His is in my number one team.

    Looks like we finally have some depth. The range of that depth means we can select the best option based on the opposition. We can also select on the basis of peaking and tapering and resting players for maximum performance. We use the whole squad to have a best team on the field each week. No one guaranteed a spot every week. We can even rest Gawny by playing Pruess in conjunction, off the bench or in place of depends on the opposition.

    Hunt is no certainty and will need to play well in the preseason to get a spot.

    I think Lever will play. My point was that Lever and Hore probably don't play in the same team.

    In my opinion if Jones is starting 22 we are in trouble. Melksham definitely starting 22.

    O'Mac would need to improve greatly to even be considered. I see Tomlinson as a swing man not really a winger. Would prefer to see Salem make it his own but he needs to really hurt the opposition more ,rather than just linking with Dinky Kicks. Hunt maybe another option here if his discipline improves.

    Thanks, Whilst I read some of last year and attended/watched all year I gave myself a season off posting once I sensed it may not meet expectations. Back into preseason like the rest of the team. Go Dees.

      There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.
