The not kicking on his right probably makes a lot more sense now. Was dragging on too long to just be a the foot infection. They're really strict on kicking with quad injuries.

^ Great to see Gawn and may get thru unscathed.

Wouldn't be surprised to see them play some quarters in the Casey game next weekend to catch up with game fitness.  May looked a bit rusty, Max looked good.

Any word on Vanders?

Apparently kicked a player in a contest and was a bit sore so they took him off as a precautionary measure given his history.

Fingers crossed it turns out to be just soreness and doesn't develop.

I'm at the Launceston Airport, I'm on the same flight as the players. Vanders has a very heavy limp, I could go ask him but don't want to look like a creep.

Take one for the team MD ?

Channel 9 news showed Toby, AVB and Weid all on crutches. Latter two rolled ankles. Weid looked worse than Toby.

Thought it was said that Aaron would be sent for a scan.

Just now, Demonland said:

Do you mean Toby and Weid rolled ankles or AVB and Weid rolled ankles?

Sorry, Toby and Weid rolled ankles. Weid's looked awful.I thought they said AVB was bruised foot.

Has KK trained this year at all? Or is he working out in the gym?

feel awfully sorry for him but if he is to miss the whole year it's a blow

I don't believe this is based on new information. Hopefully the club makes an announcement on vanders, Weid and Bedford.

The 14 big names now in doubt for Round 1 of the AFL season

Aaron vandenBerg (Melbourne)

This luckless Demon continues to have a nightmare injury run.

VandenBerg returned for Melbourne’s opening Marsh Community Series game against Adelaide last month, before coming from the ground against Hawthorn on Friday night with another foot injury.

The 28-year-old has only managed seven games since the end of 2016 and didn’t play a single game in 2019 due to ongoing issues with his troublesome foot.

Simon Goodwin got new skipper Max Gawn back against the Hawks, but doesn’t look like having vandenBerg for the trip to face West Coast in Round 1.

Smith, AVB, KK.... starting to sound familiar

Throw in Nietschke as well, and the band is back together. Time for this club to grow some balls and make some tough decisions on players who can't get on the field regularly. Bad luck only stretches so far - at some point you have to accept that certain players don't have the bodies to play at AFL level.

Early prognosis

Weideman rolled his ankle against Hawthorn on Friday night but should be available for the season-opener against West Coast. But the luckless vandenBerg could be set for another stint on the sidelines after pulling up sore against the Hawks. Max Gawn played half a game against the Hawks and has declared himself a starter for round one, while Steven May also got through on his comeback from his own knee issue. Mystery continues to surround Joel Smith's fitness, given his absence from pre-season hitouts. - Jennifer Phelan

I don't believe the Weideman/vandenBerg information here is based on anything official. It's most likely conjecture based on the little facts we already know.

According to SEN, Harley Bennell has suffered another “slight” calf strain which will set his recovery back again.

Christian Salem’s illness is glandular fever - he’s an outside chance to return for round 1.

BENNELL SUFFERS ANOTHER CALF INJURY IN LATEST INJURY SETBACK

This might be the MFCSS talking and I don't think I'm going out on a limb here but I don't think Harley will ever play a game for the Demons.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • POSTGAME: West Coast

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
