This list is for the lead-up to the drafts.  All of these guys are looking to get a shot in the draft.  Bennell is going through a different process.  Hopefully Murray will as well.

We've decided not to pursue Murray.

From Jon Ralph'

" Melbourne will host ex-Fremantle half-forward Harley Bennell from December 3 as he trials for a rookie spot but have ruled out securing ex-Pies defender Sam Murray. "

Jack & Dworship have pretty much covered this but to extend a little..

The SSP begins from 1 Dec (ie; after all drafts are completed) and finishes on 15 March.  Our first training session from then is Tues 3rd Dec which is the reason that date is being mentioned.  I assume Bennell can do any official program/customised training with us from the 1st as deemed appropriate.

My take is Bennell is then officially part of the club (albeit only under the SSP deal) and receives a base minimum salary up to the 15th (or more serious $$ if signed under a standard AFL contract before then).

Sounds like we’ve adopted the one d***head at a time rule.

MIght be more of an indication on who we will take at pick 3, a quick, marking Half Back with a great kick

Has there ever been a definitive explanation as to why "permission to train" is even necessary? One possible reason is insurance for injury and another might be to stop draft tampering (although I don't know how).

Interesting, no sign of Sam Murray at all.

It seems we have ruled him out but I dont think his suspension ended until the 17th of Dec.

I thought we’d get one or two players training with us. Of course Bennell counts

They get payed I think.

But why does the AFL need to give permission for that to happen?

I think its a quasi registration process to cover insurance and payment.

So do Bennell and Brown now train with us from next week.

Assume we have 2-3 months to top up with 2x rookies or an upgrade.

Monday 2nd as I understand it sns. I believe Brown is in good knick but I think Bennell is starting from scratch. Current wisdom seems to be that if he stays he would not play at any level till well after the start of the season.

Struggle to see him making it, a Hail Mary shoot I think.

The dominant storyline coming out of Round One for Saturday Night’s clash at Optus Stadium centres on the influence of the big men. The spotlight naturally falls on two elite ruckmen who, five years ago, shared the stage in Melbourne’s memorable premiership triumph.

The compromised AFL fixture will get another test this week with the first lot of teams getting a bye after only two matches. Despite this Round 2 starts off with two cracking games as the Hawks host the Swans at the G on Thursday Night and then on Friday Night the Crows host the Bulldogs at Adelaide Oval. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?
