“He obviously didn’t have a pre-season with the AFL team, but had one with Casey. He’s another one that can play multiple positions – he had an outstanding game against Fremantle (21 disposals and two goals) which I think showed the sort of player he is and what he’s capable of. Towards the backend of the year his body probably let him down a little bit – he got a bit fatigued – but I think having a good rest over the break and coming back to do a full pre-season will be great for him. His fundamentals are very good and he played 12 games after coming straight into the team after being drafted.” - Matt Egan MFC Head of Player Development

Proper footballer who could cement a spot with some continuity.

Good agility in traffic, acceleration, good decision maker and hits targets.

Midfield/forward is his go.

I'm fairly bullish and would not be surprised if he was a 200 gamer.

One of the few bright sports for us last year, could be a real find for us after playing well off a VFL pre season.

Can't wait to see him after a full AFL pre season think he could be a real gun for us and kick a few goals.

He will be having his first AFL preseason this year. I suspect that will be huge for him.

Same goes for dunkley and fritter will only be having his third.

He certainly showed a lot against Freo, a good pre-season and watch out. I have him a lock for forward pocket. Well done Jay...!!!!

I'm not quite sold on Lockhart yet, but clearly a full pre season will be crucial. I'm amazed the club kept playing him each week as he hit the wall late in the year - he should have been given the McDonald / Spargo mini pre-season to reset.

There is no point him being part of the revolving door half forward brigade - he needs to offer a point of difference as a crumbing forward pocket or a lock down defender. The fact that he can potentially do both is a massive boost to his chances of becoming a long term player.

Reminds me a lot of Andy Lovell (looks, build, Tasmanian).  Looked good up forward this year before tiring out.  Was a huge ask to take the leap from VFL amateur to AFL player within a couple of weeks.  Didn’t look overwhelmed.

Will be interesting to see where he trains over summer.  Could be our long term small defender.  Good pace, size, disposal and tough.

If he had of gone to the pre-season draft where would everyone have him?

And Dunkley for that matter.

Agree.

He just seems to make good decisions and have good skills.

I would be.

He will start the next season at 24 with 12 games behind him. If he played every game for the next 8 years he would be on 188 games.

Realistically though, he has some good attributes, including courage and has a lot of scope for improvement.

Would be nice to see him become a regular.

I didn't mean that he would be an actual 200 gamer in the literal sense, more that he would have the vibe of one.

I thought he was younger than that.   If his body can withstand the rigours I think he will have very good career.

Love that 200 game vibe!

He is a tough nut and has a real chance to cement his place in the side. Can take a good grab as well.

Given of the 1,350 players to pull on the red and blue only ~25 have made 200 games (1.8%), ~33 more between 150-199 games (i.e. 4.3% of all players above 150), and ~98 between 100-149 games (11.6% above 100 games).

If we draft/rookie 5 new players per year on average, we only get one 100 game player every 2 years (1.15 to be more precise).

All that being said, I like Lockharr. I he'll make it to 100+ games.

I'd assume that is at least in part due to the lack of finals, with the more successful clubs' players getting an extra 20 possible games in a career. But that doesn't explain it all does it?

Edit: perhaps our stats are lowered by the longevity of the club: changes in season length, the effects of wars etc. while the averages are skewed by the younger clubs?

Brings me back to my school days at CBC St Kilda, Tarax. Belted by a few brothers (totally deservedly) back in the day for not knowing my verbs.

Re Jay,

He is a player.

I thought he was terrific early. Good kicking technique, plenty of pace, hard at it and got plenty of the ball.

I thought he drifted out of the game moreso with that ‘connection’ problem we have.

Plenty for the coaches to work with here now he can have a pre season with the AFL team. Can’t see why he can’t play a Puopolo role, probably in the midfield as well.

He is a genuine footballer, and has the opportunity to cement a spot as a small forward in out best 22. To get 12 senior games in last season was a ripping feat, and he could take it one step further and push for a whole season if his form and fitness is up to it.

In the Chandler thread you're saying you can't understand why we gifted him a game and in this thread you're saying you can't understand why we kept playing Lockhart.

Maybe the fact that half our list was unavailable might help understanding?

Aaron Davey only played 180ish didn't he? And he had Lockhart covered for agility, acceleration and decision making hungover.

I'd say that's very bullish.

Hope I'm wrong.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
