AaronDaveyChipsAndGravey 390 Posted October 16, 2019 Posted October 16, 2019 B+ for mine pending draft selections. Langdon and Tomlinson are solid pick ups for not much at all. Draft plays were smart and calculated. Glad Mahoney and co. avoided the shambles of deadline day and didnt get sucked into anything dumb. Could have been better had we landed a readymade forward, either tall or small. We will be light on that area next year which is a big risk, but could pay off without having to have grabbed a plug and play player like Jenkins or the likes. Two top 10 draft picks could really be coming on in then next 3 years or so when (hopefully) we’re tilting at a flag. However, I think we can all agree that we’re in better hands than most (SOS, Dodoro Harley and whoever manages Norf - wouldnt have a clue who he is) Quote
Undeeterred 3,127 Posted October 16, 2019 Posted October 16, 2019 If McDonald and Melksham get back on the park next year we will be fine up forward. We probably forget how damaging Melksham in particular can be. I think we did extremely well - got the outside players we needed who push a couple of fringe players out. It also takes Brayshaw, Jones, Salem, Hunt and god knows who else off the wings We can use 3 or really push GWS - I reckon they will pony up before the draft with something decent 1 Quote
Little Goffy 14,972 Posted October 16, 2019 Posted October 16, 2019 Two best 22 players in, one of which is realistically top-10 and both of which fill needs. Frost out is something that people have hugely varying opinions on, almost as variable as the possible value of the 2020 first rounder. I'm very happy with being early in this allegedly 'deep at the front' draft instead of 'somewhere' in the allegedly compromised' 2020 draft, even at the cost of the second rounder we threw in to make it happen. I'm a big fan of the 'high-low' approach to draft that we've (under Taylor especially) used these last five or six years while picking up the likes of Hibberd, Melksham and now Langdon with the 'in-betweener' picks. Very happy. Still some action to play out with the pick trading right onto draft night. I'm sure GWS will be constantly reassing how early they need to be to get ahead of any bids for Green. Wild times. 1 Quote
Leoncelli_36 2,264 Posted October 16, 2019 Posted October 16, 2019 Genuine question ... who plays small forward next year? What’s the goal kicking X factor ? Beyond McDonald, who is our key target ? These are the other areas that I believe in 12 months we are going to be looking to target. The clubs around us onthe ladder and looking to get back up the ladder have recruited better than we have. Ron Burgundy 8,588 Posted October 16, 2019 Posted October 16, 2019 I think our list is okay. That said, I’m genuinely surprised we didn’t play harder to secure a decent small (and another proven tall) forward - they’re obvious deficiencies which haven’t been addressed, and there were several candidates (seemingly) on the market. Real pity we missed Elliott. I’m however super happy with Langdon. Pleased with Tomlinson. Having two picks in the top 10 is fantastic - now need to nail them obviously. B+ 1 Quote
Dee tention 619 Posted October 16, 2019 Posted October 16, 2019 Isaac Smith and one of Casboult or Jenkins would have given our list more depth. We are very light up forward for a big body! Hopefully TMac, Weid and Smith can get some consistency in there game. Quote

Wiseblood 24,637 Posted October 16, 2019 Author Posted October 16, 2019 Here are the grades the Herald Sun gave every club for their trade period. Interested to read what people think - we all know how biased they can be: Adelaide: B- Brisbane: B Carlton: B Collingwood: B- Essendon: B+ Fremantle: C Geelong: A Gold Coast: B+ GWS: B Hawthorn: B+ Melbourne: C+ North: C Port: C+ Richmond: C Saints: A+ Sydney: C West Coast: A Dogs: B+ Quote

Don't know if i am sold on going with Weideman and McDonald again. The rest I really like though! If Goodwin's worth his money, he'll build a system around the players we have. There's enough talent there if we get the systems right. 1 Quote
hemingway 7,633 Posted October 16, 2019 Posted October 16, 2019 From what’s been said, the Club got what it wanted. The discussion is really whether the clubs ambitions were high enough. I think the club was realistic and practical. Sure another forward would be good but there were no outstanding options. With a few exceptions, the available players were just ok. We have not done too badly when you look at the other clubs and their trades. The strange trade for me is Frost as we virtually gave him away. Quote

I think I've got this right, but I'll edit it if I didn't (and please feel free to let me know where I stuffed it up!) In: Tomlinson, Langdon, Pick 8, Future Second Rounder (Hawks), Future Fourth Rounder (Freo) Out: Frost, Pick 22, Pick 26, Pick 42, Pick 50, Pick 61, Pick 79, Future First Rounder,, Future Second Rounder, Future Fourth Rounder Using a scale of A+ right through to an F, how would you rate the trade period as a whole? For me, it's a B, although that could rise or fall depending on how we go about using our first two picks. If we can break one of them up and get something really good back for it, then it could push toward an A. If we were to relent and do the trade with GWS for Pick 6 and a future first rounder then it might drop to a B-. But I doubt we do that. But we finish the trade period with two picks inside the top 10 and we've added a good player in Tomlinson and a very good player in Langdon. We did give up quite a few picks, however we still hold a second rounder, a third rounder and two fourth rounders for next year to go with the two top ten picks this year. I know proof will be in the pudding when it comes to how we really did, but I'm interested to see how people are feeling right now. Got Tomlinson as a free agent. Then evaluate the trades. It’s probably a B- to C+ grade. Frost was given up for very little. Hawks 3 year offer backed us up and we folded. Still work to go 1- What’s the situation with JKH and Stretch. Delist or one year deals. Stretch should get 1-year. Jkh can walk 2 - nail the two early picks at 3 and 8 (or 6 & 8 depending on the dealings with Giants) 3- nail two delisted free agents or out of contract options (Martin, Newnes) 4- nail pick 96. !!! Wiseblood 24,637 Posted October 16, 2019 Author Posted October 16, 2019 Just now, A F said: Lol, sorry? Carlton? Betts? Bahahaha. Yeah, couldn't believe that. They missed out on their two main targets, got Betts and a back up ruckman, but get a B for that. Classic. I thought the Adelaide one was strange as well. Gave up a truck load of players without getting a whole lot in return but still get a B-. Weird. 3 Quote
Beetle 4,739 Posted October 16, 2019 Posted October 16, 2019 (edited) Sorry guys, all the nuffies on the Melbourne Facebook pages are up in arms, so I’m afraid this trade period is officially a failure. May as well close the thread please Admins. Ive given us a B, however our trade period shouldn’t be officially graded until a minute before our first selection on draft night. If we manage to walk into the draft with picks 6, 8, a second rounder and get a 2020 first round pick back then it’s an A grade from me. Edited October 16, 2019 by Beetle 1 Quote

Forest Demon 4,681 Posted October 16, 2019 Posted October 16, 2019 We have set ourselves up nicely to do a favourable pick swap with GWS. Without that, the trade with North is a bit of a loss for me. I personally would have liked to target either some key position depth or a small forward, but hopefully the draft delivers that. Once the trade with GWS is done, it is a solid B for me. Quote
