we just gave up 26 , 50 and next years first round for pick 8

why would we now give up 3 for 6 and 25 ?

there would have to be way more in it for us to give up 3 now

See above Mark....probably correct

Say what you like about our on field performance, but I think our off field and trade performances have been pretty spot on lately.

You think? This trade looks ridulously one sided. We have no second rounder for no reason and It’s quite reasonable we finish back in the pack next year, with North benefiting greatly.

For the board to agree to do this gives me little faith.

You do know there are around 17 academy players predicted to go top 30 next year yes? That means the draft is compromised and even if we finish outside the top 8 our first round pick is highly unlikely to be lower than around pick 13.

And don't forget the benefit is getting someone a year earlier and putting that year into getting them ready etc. Although i can't see a draftee improving us too greatly (if it does it shows how far off our entire list is). I'm not confident in us rebounding either, this year was such a drop off and the lack of possession chains through poor disposal/tactics worries me no end. Fingers crossed we rebound well.

Who cares

No point not bidding on Green as bidding will move our pick 8 up one rung.

GWS are going to have to trade there 2020 first rounder and 6 to us for 3. No brainer for them as well as there 2020 first rounder will be 10+ anyway. So essentially it’s Young/Serong and Green or Green + 2020 pick 10+

So many seem keen to trade 3 to GWS, but what if they then take the player we wanted at 3?

It's a gold star pick. We need to nail it.

Chris Judd (2001) and Dustin Martin (2009) draft picks 3.

They won't trade next year's 1st as they'll need it for academy points, plus pick 10 will end up being pick 18 as other clubs match their own bids and GCS have pp no 11.

When were the rules changed so that bidding now happens after trade period? I remember we had bidding on Viney before we could trade away that pick.

a couple of years now

For all those panicking that we need to make a minimum of 3 draft selections, but we only have 2 left because we've traded out our 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th round picks, can you tell me which round was Jarrod Garlett drafted by Carlton in 2017?

We'll take pick 3 and 8 I reckon. Can't see the logic in trading 3 to GWS if we can just bid anyway and still be in a better position.

De Koning is 200cm utility. Named All Aus fullback, but hasn’t really found his best position. Could become a KPF/2nd ruck type we’re lacking perhaps. Will go anywhere from 20-50. There’s not many talls in this draft so not many other options.

Thanks LT.  Can we afford to spend potentially years developing another giant though (Pruess)?  Not saying he isn't worthy but not sure he fits in our list atm.

If we are getting back into the first round next year and only going back 3 spots this year in what seems to be a very equal draft from picks 3-12 seems like a massive win for us.

I don’t believe that will happen.

I truly believe we made this deal with North today off the back of what GWS has promised us by the end of tomorrow.

I guess we shall see...either way I am happy with where we are at.

GWS first round pick next year may be 25 or even higher after a raft of academy pick are matched

I don't think the slide will be that far.... However even if that's the case we still "win" from a points perspective

Yes, we won the equivalent of pick 50. Yay!

Sounds like a trade we cannot lose...

Just imagine if GWS fall and we pick up an early teen pick

We'd only do it if we got a decent player back, otherwise both top 10 picks go to the draft and GWS risk us taking whoever they are interested in at 3.

I also think Josh Mahoney's media performances neatly find the right balance between telling the truth but not necessarily the whole truth. That's important both for members and supporters to know what's going on but also to enable him to keep his powder dry should other opportunities arise.

Can he kick?

Yes plus we've also dangled the bait for a possible tasty live morsel before today is out.

We can't lose either way imv.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

  • POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
