If we are guessing: 6 - Jackson, 15 - Langdon, 17 - Dunkley, 20 - Tomlinson, 24 - Rivers, 36 - Pickett, 38 - Brown, 43 - Bennell

I confess my irrational fascination with this topic.

I don't think Max would give up Jimmy's No. if he was offered to be captain or be the best paid player in the league.

Loyalty and honour still matter to some people - Big Max and Big Jimmy were cut from the same cloth when it comes to that and I will revere them always for it.

Live reporting from ESPN 8 the Goscho

17 - Lamar

20 - Trent from punchy

24 - krop duster

I wonder if this is their final 2020 numbers or just three available training jerseys that fit the new recruits (Frosty similar size to LJ, JKH similar size to Kozzy, Maynard similar size to TR).

Yeah I think so. I was also told Rivers will wear 24 (by the man himself).

So true on both accounts ?

At training Jackson had 17, Rivers had 20 and Kossie had 24.

I am intrigued  with the number of people who are fascinated with this subject.

However it being December probably accounts for it.

Nope 24x365 fascination.

Why F5?

I have no interest, the only interest I have is on game day. Who has what number means nothing besides identifying the player.

The interest in such minutia is part and parcel of being a real footy fan. Such trivia is quite interesting and to players it is often of cardinal importance. And of course to past players, who gets to wear their old number is often very important. “Doing the number proud”

Seriously!

I know is a very long time since I played. My only interest was getting a game the number I wore meant nothing to me.

Please forgive me if I sounded flippant (I didn’t mean to) but it’s interesting talking to past players (as I sometimes do at lunches) the interest they take in their old number, and the players who wore it after him. And when a player is assigned a number he goes up to his new locker and on the outside is stencilled the names of all previous players who wore that number. It’s just an interesting sidelight to all the trappings of football.

I was always under the impression that you had to have played a certain number of senior games (50?  100?) before you were given the honour of having your name on your locker.  Clubs may have different guidelines about this qualification I guess.

I believe there are some restrictions on the number of games played, however when I visited the locker room at AAMI park some yers ago I was intrigued to see so many names on each locker (not sure about locker48 though). I was on a quick tour and had no time to take too much notice. Still I’m not sure if you played just one or two games you’d be given the honour.

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?
