Phantom Drafts

Is it likely we will go for Serong with pick 3?

He does sound fairly enticing and will be ready to go round 1 as a small forward one would think.

Slightly concerning his height of 177cm.... but that never stopped Cyril Rioli who is the same height.

I was looking through some of the early phantom drafts and power ranking lists and noticed that there was a definite leaning or bias towards players from Victoria.

This is despite the fact that the Under 18 NAB AFL Championships were won this year by Western Australia. In Cal Twomey’s September Draft Rankings, not a single  player from the winners made the top ten.

Last year, it was South Australia that won the championship and that state provided three of the top five draftees. On that basis it might be worthwhile to take a closer look at the talent from WA given that state’s strengths in the national competition.

The Croweaters also did well this year and one player from their team who has attracted my eye because he has all the attributes we need in a young midfielder - a good mix both inside and out, endurance and pace and a good user of the ball.

I think Dylan Stephens who has been mentioned by a few posters might be a player who could be in line for selection, more so if the club manages to split pick 3.

AFL Draft Wrap: SA midfielder Dylan Stephens firms as top-10 selection

Well said WJ, the WA crop this year is a very good bunch, youve got small forwards in Taylor and Henry and Taylor is a strong overhead mark. Quality players and leaders in Robertson and Rivers, Sharp is very good by foot and in decision making, whilst Jackson is a ruckman with good skills for a bigman and another leader

Can anyone tell me, particularly Western Australians, what they think of Deven Robertson, please?

I like him  he's not a superstar but he knows how to find the footy and oozes workrate, He's not unlike Joel Selwood in terms of his leadership, desire to get the best out of himself and put his body on the line. Not quite as good but the potential is there. The Eagles and Freo would both snap him up with their second round pick.

Thanks mate. Whenever I see a West Aussie midfielder projected to go in the mid first round that doesn't seem to get the same attention as others, I just think Cripps. The WA teams also seem to have this knack of 'hiding' some of the best WA talent.

Yeah without the TAC cup here they are able to hide them with only cameo appearances in the Champs and the PSA boys being tied to their school footy so much  you only get to see them occasionally in WAFL Colts.

There's a lot of very good young boys starting to come through here now, the mining boom saw a big baby boom between 2004 and 2010, which co-incided with greater emphasis going into development across the board.

I'm gonna have to politely disagree with you on that one Paulo.

fair chance your right, i just question youngs 1on1 ability and also his pace, where i like goulds aggression, overhead marking, and he is also quick for his size.

whould you rather young at pick 3

or weightman and gould if we split the pick ?

TBH, i'm not a fan of trying to split the pick. I reckon we should try and draft Kemp (big call i know) or Young at 3 and try and try and get another pick in the top 20 and hope like hell that Weightman is still there.

Young and Weightman would help improve our kicking and small forward needs.

I'd be happy with anyone from 7-11 if we got them with pick 8. Young with Pick 3 would be my go to pick.

If GWS get a pick before having to match Green, wouldn't be surprised to see them grab Jackson. I know clubs don't generally draft rucks early but they need a good one coming through and he's been likened to Grundy.

If Serong slips that far, I'd grab him as our small forward at 8. Still think Taylor will pick Weightman at 8, and hopefully one of Young/Stephens/Kemp at 3/6.

If we want Weightman we need to split 6 or 8 with Geelong for 14 and 17 and get an extra player out of it. Doubt any other team would pick a small forward (that is not Cyril Rioli) before 15. It would be crazy to take him at 8.

Kemp #3 and Gould at #8 for me. I know we don't address our small forward problem with those picks, but you don't draft for list holes, you draft for the best players.

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
