Not sure what you’re implying, but our lack of good depth players got seriously exposed hence why we finished second bottom of the ladder. Richmond had just as many injuries for the better part of the year and were able to stay afloat.

All the players I mentioned have had a decent crack at AFL level and proven to be spuds. Obviously we cant just delist 10 players in the off season, but at least a few more should have been moved on.

Smith will work out well for us

If this bloke can finally stay out of the medical room he could be a solution to our key forward woes. A 4 goal JLT performance on one leg was very promising and he can take a grab.

A big IF tough in terms of whether he can stay healthy and whether he's actually good enough.

Locking in players such as Chandler and the Wagners prior to the trade period, and even the draft, is just plain dumb. Who knows what might eventuate in those periods and how many spots on the list we might need free. It's not as though any on that list are going to get a game anywhere else.

As it stands we have two spare spots on the senior list, which seem likely to be taken by Langdon and Tomlinson.

So where are we freeing up the spots to take 3-4 draft selections, which is the absolute minimum we should be looking for? Our list management is just abysmal.

Agreed. Which is why we're trying to improve it this offseason and a fair few are on their way out already.

Don't understand the over the top reaction here to re-signing some cheap solid depth though.

Cheap, but not so sure that some of it is so solid...

I know they're not sexy footballers for the most part, but you know what you're going to get from each, so for mine that's solid.

At the moment I have the list at 36 (senior list) + 4 (rookie list) + 1 (category B)

That leaves 4 spots on the senior list if we do not add any rookies

Might be 6 spots on the senior list if what we are hearing about Stretch and Frost is accurate

We've already lost 5 players, and there's at least 3 more to come. I know these blokes aren't exciting, but I think the reactions in this thread show a big misunderstanding about how salary caps, recruiting, lists etc all work together. We'll have at least 8 spots to fill already, what kind of quality do you think we're getting once we're down to our 11th-12th recruit in one offseason?

Its all just glossing over the fact that Frost has not resigned.....

ANB has to be hanging something on the footy department. How he has a 2 year deal is unfathomable and is exactly the kind of decision why we’ll be stuck as a mediocre team forever.

Other than that at their very best, Lockhart, Smith and maybe Baker could be best 22. The others - not a chance.

Happy with Corey Wagner on a rookie spot, however re-signing Josh seems like a mistake.

Spot on.

If we gave Josh Wagner an extension, I don't hold much hope for our list management team.

Bloody hell that's a terrible decision.

?? - you do know that 5 players have already either retired or been delisted?

People say underwhelming etc, but I think they're decent enough depth players. It's been said here before often but we've got several players stuck in between VFL and AFL level. The injuries last year didn't help. If Burgess can help the best 22-26 in relative good health then depth options aren't the end of the world.

Eg

In 2018 J Wagner played 5 games, he played 12 this year.

In 2018 B Stretch played 2 games, he played 9 this year.

They are all depth players with Smith and Baker being the best. Some people are being a bit " rude " about the Wagners. I have seen plenty of worse at Melbourne.

Better quality than what we have already. Half of these blokes are probably on more than they should be and have had their chance on a good day and blown it. We've lost 6 players already and 3 of which were  were on rookie spots which  are always a low risk high reward. So we've really only losing 3 players that were around the best 22 mark, all of which will be replaced by trades and high end picks. We would have been that much better off cutting a few more of the list-cloggers that have continually shown nothing to save money and invest development into fresher faces. Argue all you like about some of them having AFL experience, but that means diddly-squat when half of them average 10 touches in games that have been gifted through injuries.

Just FYI

Losing:

Lewis
Maynard
Stretch (likely)
Bradtke
Garlett
Keilty
Smith

Replacing:

Tomlinson
Langdon
Elliot (a chance)
Pick 3 player
Player at pick 40ish
Player at Pick 60ish
Rookies 1-2

In the face of overwhelming press consensus that we'll have pick 3 I remain hopeful we'll have 2 and they will be given a mid first round or end of first round given they had 3 top ten picks and another 3rd rounder last draft they hardly need another pick 2. If they want to get Anderson so badly they can have pick 2 and Stretch for Ben King and Martin

Don't worry mate. The club will roll out the red carpet when they re-sign Frosty. Big name player.

Who? Please name the 16 players we're going to recruit who would be better than the 8 we're likely to lose and the 8 we just re-signed. Those 16 players also need to be ones that would be available at the picks we have, with trades we can do with picks (seeing we can't lose more players) or free agents. 16. Go.

Rubbish comment mate. Come on. You have no idea what they're earning.

Once again, no team has 40+ "best 22" players. You're just showing you don't understand the complexities of a list.

Losing:

Maynard
Keilty

Walker

Probably losing:
Stretch
JKH

Possibly losing (differing chances):
Frost
KK
A contracted player who requests a trade

So potentially we already have about 7-8 senior spots to fill already.

Replacing:
Tomlinson
Langdon
Pick 3
Pick 39ish
Pick 57ish
Pick 75ish

That's all we have atm. Already we have quite possibly more list spots than options to fill them, and you want to delist another 8 players. How exactly are you replacing them?

I get that it's the internet and people like to make brash statements, but so many are showing how little they're bothering to look at this situation as a big picture.

Please name the 16 players we're tossing out, you only managed 11 in your comment, then come have a proper conversation. If you had any idea you'd have read my earlier comment where I agreed with half of our 8 re-signings...The only two I really cant accept is ANB and Josh Wagner.

Just FYI - We had 10 list changes at the end of 2018. On what I was suggesting we would be making around that many this year which is a pretty standard number across EVERY club.

Once again I never said we need 40 best 22 players so stop claiming that I'm sick of repeating myself. However we need more quality players capable of performing competently at AFL level or at least pushing the performance of the senior side up. Honestly could anyone have said this year that players were under any sort of pressure playing for their spots in the side??

Josh is so vanilla & lacks pace. Hard 2 understand y they've given him another year. He doesn't make good decisions, but maybe they just like him because he's a good guy. Melbourne have always shied away from recruited talented bad boy types whereas other clubs embrace them.

Couldnt agree more. If I ever have to watch Josh Wagner go about 5th man up in a pack and complete f it up I will spew up. Wouldn't mind a bit of character around the joint, we are about as vanilla as it gets

You're complaining about the 8 players we've re-signed, so 8 plus 8 equals 16.

Josh Wagner was always going to be kept on, he's about the only back-up (mid-sized) defender we have.

  • PREVIEW: Fremantle

A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. It’s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this year’s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.

  • NON-MFC: Round 06

The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old side—the Tigers—coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
