A Collingwood mate of mine who is a good footy coach in his own right reckons Murray would be a great pick up for us, and could eventually take over Jettas role but give us extra run and speed off half back.

Definitely would be best 22 .

Probably should keep that to yourself

Why would you have it running for 3 weeks, but have one day in the middle when it doesn’t ? What is that all about?

Weren’t the club meeting with Murray during the week?  Where are our usual (as opposed to “usually”) reliable sources with the inside scoop?

If we were going to sign him DFA, wouldn’t we have done so by now?  Perhaps we are looking at rookie or supplemental list?  We would have to be certain no one else wanted him as well if we were to do this.

IMO rookie or supplemental is more likely, especially given there's always the chance we end up with more draft picks than we do currently and it changes our balance between senior and rookie spots.

The DFA period runs another 2 weeks, so why the hurry? Would imagine at the least, both parties are doing their due diligence.

if he is a player we want we should be trying to reel him in as soon as possible to reduce the chances of other teams snapping him up, or driving his price up.

I read on some random site that today is the last day to enrol for the National Draft and the Pre Season Draft, does anyone know if this is correct.

Still reckon the kid was ripped off. I know nothing about the Sam but I’m guessing he wasn’t trying to gain an advantage. Only difference between him and a multitude of other AFL players is the timing.
Fair to say I won’t be holding his 18 month ban against him

The kid from Casey who got done for importing a protein supplement on the advice of a club doctor and NEVER ACTUALLY TOOK ANY was ripped off.  Murray did something idiotic.

Have we cooled on Murray or just taking our time?

The first DFA window closes on Monday and I'm getting a bit impatient waiting for something to happen.

They were supposed to be having a chat with him this week.  I'm thinking it's most likely that they will ask him to join training in December along with Bennell and look at a rookie spot.  Can we take two players as supplementary rookies in March?

he is worth a senior spot, if we dont give it to him someone else will.  A rookie spot should be for someone who needs to grow into a role, and is not ready to play yet. This guy is a ready made player.  pick him up now if he is available, or risk losing him to someone else who can see his value.

Jon Ralph in HeraldSun reporting that Melbourne have ruled out securing ex Pies defender Sam Murray. Wonder what happened. I thought he looked like a good prospect. He goes on to say ex Bomber Mitch Brown has been linked to the Dees.

Interesting.   Delisted quickly by pies.

Rejected by us despite being a young player with attributes we require.

Something's crook in Tallarook.

Diamonds in the rough are obviously super rare at this level.

Surely, if this guy had the upside we were hoping for, the Pies would’ve wrapped him up long ago i.e. we wouldn’t even have been in the conversation.

That said, I reckon Bennell will help us win the flag. And I hope he does.

Could be we're looking at Young ahead of Jackson in the draft and therefore Brown ahead of Murray DFA. List spots are limited and we have 3, 8, 97 and Bennell to accomodate. That leaves 1 free Senior list spot.

Possibly, but Collingwood wasted no time in cutting him.  Our interest was reported reported immediately.   Our interest in Brown appears to coincide with our loss of interest in Murray.

That a lack of reported interest from other clubs leads one to inferences.  However they are only inferences.

I'd highly doubt that who we look at as a delisted free agent would make any difference to who we draft, realistically a DFA might help plug a gap but there would be a low % they become long term valuable team members, whilst a draftee, in particular at the pointy end, you'd hope to have on the list for 12 years.

You’ve got it the wrong way around. Fifty’s point was if we draft Young then there’s no need for Murray, if we draft Jackson then we don’t pick up Brown.

Brown over Murray isn’t influencing who we draft but could be a tell on who we will draft.

I think that could be correct.

But I also think a mature depth tall makes more sense than Murray who has some speed but probably isn’t AFL standard skill wise or character wise.

I was suggesting it was the other way around - who we intend to draft influences who we target in DFA.  If we're taking Young we've got less need for HB depth and Murray and if we're not taking Jackson we have more need for tall depth hence Brown.

Yeah what DeeSpencer said.

Yeah what DeeSpencer said.

Sorry read the post wrong, agree with you and DS

Having just read the article regarding Murray on AFL.com.au, I feel clubs may not be enamoured with him maintaining his innocence over his suspected drug use.

If he has willingly used cocaine and is not willing to admit it after testing positive, that's probably a fairly decent indicator that you've got someone that's going to be difficult to work with.

Having said that, maybe he really did just 'inadvertently' come into contact with cocaine but I think this would be playing a bigger part in his struggle to find a club than his actual football ability.

I'm blowed (geddit?) if I know how you can "inadvertently" come into contact with cocaine to the extent that it shows up in a drug test.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

When looking back at the disastrous end to the game, I find it a waste of time to concentrate on the final few moments when utter confusion reigned. Forget the 6-6-6 mess, the failure to mark the most dangerous man on the field, the inability to seal the game when opportunities presented themselves to Clayton Oliver, Harry Petty and Charlie Spargo, the vision of match winning players of recent weeks in Kozzy Pickett and Jake Melksham spending helpless minutes on the interchange bench and the powerlessness of seizing the opportunity to slow the tempo of the game down in those final moments.

  • CASEY: Sandringham

The Casey Demons rebounded from a sluggish start to manufacture a decisive win against Sandringham in the final showdown, culminating a quarter century of intense rivalry between the fluctuating alignments of teams affiliated with AFL clubs Melbourne and St Kilda, as the Saints and the Zebras prepare to forge independent paths in 2026. After conceding three of the first four goals of the match, the Demons went on a goal kicking rampage instigated by the winning ruck combination of Tom Campbell with 26 hitouts, 26 disposals and 13 clearances and his apprentice Will Verrall who contributed 20 hitouts. This gave first use of the ball to the likes of Jack Billings, Bayley Laurie, Riley Bonner and Koltyn Tholstrup who was impressive early. By the first break they had added seven goals and took a strong grip on the game. The Demons were well served up forward early by Mitch Hardie and, as the game progressed, Harry Sharp proved a menace with a five goal performance. Emerging young forwards Matthew Jefferson and Luker Kentfield kicked two each but the former let himself down with some poor kicking for goal.
Young draft talent Will Duursma showed the depth of his talent and looks well out of reach for Melbourne this year. Kalani White was used sparingly and had a brief but uneventful stint in the ruck.
