Is he fast?  He doesnt kick a lot of goals for a supposed small forward, but he has had some seasons averaging over 20 touches and averaged 6 tackles one season.

If he doesnt have pace he wont help us.

Tomlinson doesn't have pace but will help us. Think people have oversold our need for "pace" a bit this year.

Gray is a genuine goal sneak who we can get for free. With Garlett gone, I don't think we have any genuine small forward goal sneak types, and IMO it's a weakness for us in our list (as it stands pre-draft). Would have been our equal 3rd goal kicker this year.

Wouldn't be completely against it because he would probably be best 22 but I've always thought he was more of an up and back half forward flanker than a dangerous small forward.

If he's just competing with ANB, Lockhart, C. Wagner, Sparrow, Hannan, Hunt, Chandler etc and maybe one of pick 3/8 then even if he's the best option of those players we aren't noticeably improving. We've committed to so much depth in that role I'd rather use a list spot on a guy with more upside to really make the number 1 small forward job their own.

100%. Proven goal kicker and an improvement on Spargo and ANB.

That is true, just looking at form and contributions at the coalface. Is Sam Gray worth it? He gives limited indication of vast improvements in form and value to the team we have - but certainly more than Spargo, so far and ANB, to date over a longer timeframe.

After missing out on Elliott, Gray would be a decent fallback option. Not a traditional small forward, but he adds running power and can have an impact. Definitely should be enquiring.

Agreed we should be seeing if we can pick him up, that would mean that we dont have to waste our draft picks on another small forward so that we can take the best possible players with our two picks.

We could ask Jack what he thinks of him?

More a mid or HFF than a small forward. OK-ish but I'm not that sure he fills a need

We seem to have gone into a shell.

Are we associated with anybody at the moment?

Or just not blabbing.

We have 6 spots to fill and are clearly not drafting 6,  so we are likely talking to someone.

Murray, Martin and Bennell

Draft Young, Stephens/Weightman and a KPF

Addresses our needs of speed, skills and X-factor

Not sure that's 100% accurate.

From what I can gather, this is the list situation:

AFL LIST SIZE
38 - 40 senior listed players
4 - 6 rookies
Up to 3 cat B rookies
Maximum total list size of 47 players

CURRENT DEES LIST
35 Senior Listed Players
4 Rookies
1 Cat B Rookie

TOTAL = 40

This means we will be adding between 3-5 senior players, with rookie numbers depending on that final number.

Still means we'd likely be looking at delisted free agents or the PSD, but if my information is correct, it means 5 is the absolute maximum we can add to our list as far as senior players go.

Bennell would be rookie listed in my scenario above

I'd actually be pretty rapt with your scenario too btw.

Be interesting to see what happens with Bennell, gut feel is that due to the amount of interest he will get a senior list spot somewhere rather than a rookie spot.

The only issue there is that we currently have four rookies listed so that, if we took Bennell as a rookie it would have to be at the expense of a senior pick. That is, senior list = 39 + rookie list = 5.

Martin looking very unlikely.

Bennell subject to assessment. I would imagine a medical and attitude evaluation.

Probably going to Sydney unfortunately.

Shame as i think he would have improved our forward line for next to nothing.

Looking very likely now that Menzel has been delisted.

Yep, he didnt want to leave Port but they didnt want him. My info is fairly solid that Sydney is his destination.  We will see soon enough.

  • Thank You Simon Goodwin

As Demon fans, we’ve ridden a rollercoaster of emotions over the decades; the heartbreaks, the near misses, the wooden spoons, and the endless waiting. But through it all, we clung to hope. And then came Simon Goodwin. Before he ever wore red and blue, he was a champion in his own right. A five-time All-Australian, two-time Best and Fairest, and two-time premiership hero and Captain with Adelaide, Simon Goodwin was always destined to lead. When he transitioned from the field to the coach's box, first as an assistant at Essendon, he began shaping a new legacy.

  • PREVIEW: Western Bulldogs

Long ago and far away, the Melbourne Football Club replaced its coach in difficult circumstances after the team suffered a devastating loss. In the aftermath, I penned the following words: “Then came the politics, the intrigue, the axing, the sound of the football world laughing at a club, the circling of the media vultures, the reinvention of history, the anger, the irony, the pathos, the hurt on the face of the president, the dignified departure of the coach, and the determination of the newly appointed caretaker.” Today, we’re back in the same place although one difference here is that the coach who was terminated this time is Simon Goodwin, the man who four years ago

  • REPORT: West Coast

The Charles Dickens novel, A Tale of Two Cities, opens with, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, …”  This phrase highlights many of the significant challenges that humanity encounters in life, ranging from experiencing remarkable highs to living in times of despair. This is a concept that should resonate with all supporters of the Melbourne Football Club this morning as they reflect on its comprehensive 83-point victory over the struggling West Coast Eagles at Marvel Stadium. The outcome proved beyond doubt that they are the worst of clubs and that we are the best of the worst.
