Jones should relinquish captaincy now - Tex did.

What round was it when you started to panic?

Or were you as cool as a cucumber all the way through.

As Saty reminds us, its just a game, and maybe he's right.

It is just a game, I read threads like this for amusement

I always find the talk about Captaincy a bit ridiculous anyway, in sporting teams it is just a label, but unfortunately like a lot of other things in the modern game it is blown out of proportion by the media

The person(s) usually picked by the club is one who supposedly represents the brand the present coach wants to present to the world

Panic isn't the word.  Disappointed and deflated, especially for the last month, would be better words to use.  Work and a sick kid didn't help in there either, so us being out of the finals race and being rubbish was just the icing on the cake.

Not the brand that the clubs presents but the brand the club is delivering.

Ha!  That’s a stretch.

"Personally, I weighed up a lot, and eventually found some perspective," Jones told the Melbourne website.

Yeah, weighed up whether another club would take him, whether he could be bothered going to GC.
And whether he could hit the NZ slopes with his family on a measly 300k.

That's perspective.

He could easily phone the club from the snow during his family holiday and tell them he doesn’t want to be captain anymore. Selfish.

How do you know he hasn't?

You should know by now you can't say anything against Nathan.

All well and good to stick up for our own, but there's also a short ride before you just become a happy clapper.

Oh look, another happy clapper out in force

Fully agree.  putting the club second.

Probably an unpopular opinion on here but Tex was twice the captain Jones was. Tex is a 2x AFLPA captain of the year. Jones has never been in the top 5.

He’ll no doubt announce his decision over the summer to step down or it’ll be stripped from him anyway.

Tex is dynamic but too hot headed and selfish to be a measured leader. Jones plays in his own bubble. Both never developed as effective leaders and in the job too long.

We need a leaders who inspire & motivate the group. Gawn would be an ideal choice.

I reckon the players voted Walker as Captain of the year for laughs. He doesn’t lead by example on the field and he sounds like a doofus bogan whenever interviewed. Uninspiring.

Considering the players who have also received that honour, I’d doubt it. He led them very well through Phil Walsh’s death and was v.good for most of 2017. It was the club’s undoing with stupid camps that caused their undoing and Tex has been a scapegoat.

Melbourne hasn’t had a natural leader since Neitz. One great example was his statement in 2004 after the football world was calling us soft when he ran through Luke McCabe.

I sincerely hope this changes when Gawn is made captain.

As does Viney. How can players be inspired by “Les go boise!” rubbish when a great deal of them are more intelligent than the guy saying it?

One thing I will say about this.

Forget the timing, he doesn't need to step down now. No one is at home.

Nathan won't be Captain next year...I can guarantee Steele Sidebottom's good one on that.

Our club has the worst leadership of any club in the AFL. even the Suns with Witts, Swallow, Miller etc have better on field leadership.

we need to invest in someone like a Nick Maxwell figure to come into the club and develop leadership from our whole list.

it doesn't matter who is captain and who isn't, the underlying problem is our lack of leadership across the board, it's why we are so inconsistent, slow to react to opposition plays and consistently lose in the worst ways possible.

my personal opinion is we should recruit 2 on field leaders from other clubs, must be proven leaders, invest in a specific leadership coach/mentor and finally instill some ruthless, professional AFL standards at the club that we haven't had for a very long time, if at all.

Indeed. I was pondering, when do clubs typically announce captaincy appointments? Remind me when Jones/Viney was announced?

Nailed it.

I think it's at the very least debatable. our on field leadership is a mess for a team that should be much more advanced than the Suns.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
