It also moves our pick 8 one spot if we bid on Green.

Why? If we bid on Green and GWS match it, that will technically move their pick 6 to 3 whilst picks 3, 4 and 5 will move down a spot to 4, 5 and 6. Picks 7 and above will still stay exactly where they are.

The most GWS can now offer for #3 is #6, #40, #59, #60 plus future 1st rounder and 2x future 4th rounders.

Not if they make another pick swap prior to us it isn’t.

That's what he means. If we give them pick 3 for pick 6, both our picks are sliding to 7 and 9 if Sydney bids on Greene at 5.

Well maybe he doesn't but that's the important factor here. We are pushing ourselves back if we deal our pick and give them a pick before a Greene bid comes in. They would need to be offering something amazing to stop us from bidding.

Unless they trade some of their existing picks (elsewhere) before dealing with us.

Live trading on drafting day could be interesting but it's still difficult to see them satisfying us unless there's something else we don't know about.

It looks reasonably obvious that pick 6 and next year's first rounder just wasn't enough for us to give up pick 3 to them.

6 is the only pic I like out of that lot and no way near enough to get our pic 3. Will be interesting to see what they do.

I still think a deal will get done before the draft. We will both come out ahead by doing a deal and the deadline was meaningless today without a player being involved.

40+59 = 32 based on points. Could be a team in the 30's somewhat interested in that.

6, 32, future first has me at least interested.

Does GWS have any players out of contract they can delist for us to pick up as delisted free agents after a pick swap? Is it possible for players and clubs to agree to cancel contracts?

They need the points themselves for Green.

I think we’re now in the realm of accepting 6 and their 1st rounder in 2020 plus shrapnel, or trading with someone else who has more assets & wants pick 3.

GWS might have to look at dealing with Sydney & Adelaide, and hoping we don’t bid on Green.

Deal was essentially us going from 3&8 to 7&9 with a pick in the 20s (2020 first rounder) coming back our way.

No team would take that deal.

I think we'll take 3 & 8 to the draft. GWS don't have the currency for a deal that's enticing enough without offering a player. That ship has sailed.

Would expect Sydney to bid on Green with 5. Give him a couple of years apprenticed to Joey Kennedy before replacing him

I’m sure we will also bid on him as his an inside midfield contested beast. Goodwin would be all over this one thankfully.

They need to keep enough to pay for Green, so on face value this won't be done now.

Could GWS trade away pick 6 for another teams 2020 first rounder?  Would almost make sense for them to now.

I posted the below on another thread, but was unsure if it could be done. I wonder now if this is the way to get a player from GWS, though they had plenty of chances today to do that sort of deal.

"If a player is to be involved it has to be done in the next 97 minutes. Unless you could delist a player who agrees to come to us."

I suppose if we named any players, GWS thought them superior to the player they were looking at drafting before Green.

GWS will do a deal with us. They just need time to deal themselves into something of value for us. At present we hold pick 3, and we will most likely bid on Greene with it. Any club would be desperate to do a deal with us and GWS are no exception. We know they are desperate so we will wait for overs at the trade table. Thankfully not even MFC can stuff this one up, its pretty straight forward, the ball is in GWS court. If no deal is done its on them. We sit firmly in the box seat with this one. I expect a deal to be done, and I expect fairly solid overs.

We will see.

At not one point since obtaining pick 8 have I thought we will take picks 3 and 8 to the draft.

Yes time will tell but isn't it good to finally hold all the aces with 3 & 8 and sit back to see what offers come our way. I believe the club has done a great job this year and need to continue this path through to the draft and psd

Calculated and purposeful. I dig it.

I wonder how much of it came about after our inability to get back into the first round to draft Zak Butters last year.

Our trade with North could have been done at anytime up until and including the draft night. Maybe it was to pressure GWS with pick 3 (which hasn't worked out).

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
