Reported on Talking Footy that he could be on the move. North offering 1 year and is looking for 2 year deal.

Would you?

How old is he?

Same draft as Jones so probably around 31 and yes we should take him, dangerous forward and mid.

I’m a yes, brilliant outside player with great skills.

Is he a free agent?

5 years ago yes, one of my fav players. Now, maybe. An upgrade on Lewis and Jones?

Too old, quite possibly. We can’t keep being a nursing home for a year too long.

What makes him a ‘dangerous forward’? He’s kicked 7 goals this season.

He’s having a good season but at his age a one year contract makes sense, two years may be a little risky.

He is a smart player and good decision maker, he has kicked fewer goals this season as he has predominantly played midfield. A player who has the ability to kick 39 goals in a season would fit that description.

Even if he gave us nothing in the second season (depending on his salary). I would prefer that to having someone like Stretch clogging up our list.

Yes

Players with his level of skill, awareness and decision making always stay in the game longer.

I'm up for upgrading our list and at this stage, age shouldn't be a [censored] factor if the player in question has a blend of attributes that we're crying out for.

We're second [censored] bottom on the ladder.

No doubt the cushies on here will churn out the usual, "nah but we need to give games to player x, y and z". (Meanwhile another year goes down the gurgler).

Fair points.

I think the best parts of Higgins won't fade with time, he's a beautiful kick, a good leader, and very smart. i'd feel  much better with him on a wing than i do with Jones out there.

To clarify this, he is contracted for 2020 and looking for a 2 year extension on top of this. I just lost any interest.

Found it strange that North would only offer 1, but now it makes sense.

I wouldn’t mind him coming, very good player and doesn’t look like slowing down any time soon. Fox Sports reporting Geelong have emerged as a potential front runner to get him. Seriously, is there anyone not linked to that club?

And how the hell can they fit him into their salary cap?!

100% yes, he would transition beautifully to an outside player with great skills.

3 years for a player that would enter next season at 32?

Just now, Watts the matter said:

yeah 3 years is a lot, no doubt about that.. would offer 2 with a 3rd as an option but put it this way, someone will likely offer him 3 years, and they could get 2 pretty good years out of him.

I guess it depends on what he costs and how we would get him.

Yes, but no problem if we let him slide by. In recent years we have recruited Daniel Cross and Jordan Lewis. Both of these have been very positive recruits, so another of the same quality might be required seeing that Lewis is retiring.

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.

The Demons simply did not take their opportunities when they presented themselves and ultimately when down by 25 points effectively ending their finals chances. Goal kicking practice during the Bye?
