We give them pick 2 and a player( hibbert maybe) for king and pick 10. They get pick 1&2 and mature player we get king and still get into draft early enought to try and pick up player we need.

Yeah i think King would be great and that scenario is probably spot on, King and Pick 17 (end up 19ish) for Pick 2. BUT  i really think we also need to add more top end talent, so i think we would need to get back inside the top 10 somehow..  and to do that we would have to offer something pretty substantial, is that Brayshaw to carlton for pick 8?

That's not bad but i dont think Hibbo gets its done.. maybe its Hunt and another player?

yeah I agree. I would prioritise picking up skilled outside runners over a key fwd. hence why i'd only take King if we could get Martin on the cheap as well. the deal would have to be largely weighted in our favour to make me consider it.

20 for Langdon, 38 for Amon, future 2nd for Isaac Smith???

In: King, Langdon, Amon, Smith and 17

Out: 2, 20, 38, future 2nd

Maybe swap of later picks too.

Gives us a 1st rounder for this year and for 2020. Gil will be happy with that, complies with AFL rules.

I'd shop Brayshaw or Viney around as well, a curve ball. If it got us a player such as Hill, it would improve our list tremendously. Can't see it eventuating though.

Stranger things have happened in trade week!

Reasonable scenario.

I can't  see them shopping viney due to the optics of trading a captain. And to be honest I'm not sure  how much cuurency he would have (poor skills, fe2 tricks, history of navicular issue).

Can see them shopping Brayshaw.  Mainly because he has currency and we have other inside mids. But he was dropped at the beginning of 2018 (or was it 2017?)  because he wasn't fit enough. And I wonder if he came back fit this  year.

Brayshaw not fit. Haven’t read about the extra training him and his brothers do every preseason? 100 x 100 meter sprints. The guy is a machine with his fitness. Fitness was not his issue. Reading that we get rid of a player like brayshaw for a hill type is crazy. It’s like sacrificing the queen in chess for a pawn.

The question we have to ask is:

(a) is getting King for pick two under Juddys scenario better than;

(b) trading pick 3 to GWS for picks 11 and 13 + a player.

If it’s pick 3 for King AND pick 17 that would make it about on par with option b)

Line ball decision in that case. King looks a very very good KPF prospect and would come with 18 months of development under his belt. I’d probably go for a) and use pick 17 to help solve the outside class issue.

He was injured this year and didn't get to do all that fitness work, I reckon if he gets that done over this summer he'll go back to that 2018 form.

A back injury restricted his preseason especially prior to christmas and he was unable to do those sprints

We’re entitled to pick 2 because we finished second last. Would I prefer we actually did what most of us here expected to do and back up last year with finals? Of course.

But the team that finishes second last gets pick 2.

Gold Coast getting another top 2 pick isn’t surprising but it’s not going to solve the issue. They should’ve instead been given multiple additional picks lower down (say top 20-30) that they’d have to trade and go after senior players that can help build something there.

They are a rudderless ship and to send another top two draft prospect there not going to fix their larger issues.

You've just described a club identical to Melbourne in it's day. I support a PP going to GC

And what did those picks do for us? Not a hell of a lot.

They need established senior players that can compete and guide their young brigade, if they had a number of them coming to the club I'd have little more faith those picks wouldn't go to waste but right now it looks like those kids will either go up there to fail or develop and go to another club after 2-4 years.

Why?

They have already got a Pick 2 on their list who didn't play this season.

They have more than enough young talent on their list, their issues are with the people in charge at the club.

The AFL used an untried Jesse Hogan and average prospects such as Toumpass and JKH as a reason for us not getting a PP, so I expect the same will be applied with Rankine and other GC prospects.

Melbourne supporters are more biased than collingwood yelling "ball" for every opportunity. Bit sad you all have such double standards. We blew our picks, simple. We don't know what talent GC have, but they sure play as badly as what we did. The best teams like hawthorn, Geelong, Sydney don't waste their pucks, they finish top 4 religiously and still get high end talent. Time for us to stop caring where we finish from a draft pick perspective. It's quite sad really

Agree with the aim of the first part of your post. King. Langdon, another runner (maybe that's Tomlinson?), Smith and 17. That's significantly more outside run. I'd also like to target two zippy smalls to compliment the rest of our forwardline.

But we don't have enough genuine ball winners to be getting rid of any of our midfield core, so I wouldn't be trading Gus or Jack.

Yes, think you may be right there AF. However, if we got a decent offer for Gus or Jack it would be interesting to see what the Club does, particularly when there many empty seats in the FD at the moment

A small forward would be handy.

Amon has re-signed since I posted that too.

There's something a bit Bulldogs end of 2015 about where we're at currently. If we were to trade out our captain or Gus, you'd want it to pay off pretty quickly, otherwise there'd be blood on the dancefloor in 2020.

IMO we absolutely have to add at least one natural crumber. As @Fifty-5 and I have been saying, Viney should play forward next year too.

Yup, noticed that, so I'm sure we're looking at other options.

Your point makes no sense. Yes, we blew our picks, just like the Gold Coast blew a bunch of theirs. They traded away Oliver to try and get him at a later pick, they took Martin ahead of Kelly and Hogan, they traded Lyon for squat. They decided not to play Wright and Martin in their last game, must have great depth to be keeping them out of the side.

The difference is we are not asking for a handout, we are asking for the draft to take place as it should.

Using your basis that we created our own mess, how have you come to the conclusion that GC deserve more handouts after already receiving allowances last season?

I would love for you to explain how this is 'double standards'? What do you mean we don't know what talent they have? They had 3 of the top 6 picks in the last draft and will have the 1st pick in this draft.

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
