Not only would I have recruited him but have the ability to handle and mentor him.

Why not recruit yourself to play in the Grand Final. You're that good.

In terms of bringing in a bloke who is AFL ready and has been in the system for years then, yes, to me that's a free hit.  You don't find them in the draft.

You do actually, if you're prepared to look and take the chance...a list spot is a valuable commodity and not just a free hit.

Tom Brown just said it seems Tomlinson is a lock to the Dees.

Yes, he is...came to terms after St Kilda left the race.

Does that mean we were his only option?

I'm a little concerned that he may be for us what Kristian Jaksch was for Carlton. I get that he may be a role player and so forth. I just think the bloke seems to lack urgency and a bit of mongrel. Hope I'm wrong.

We have to replace the players we’ve already delisted and there’ll be more who leave. Since we can’t replace them all from the draft, who would you bring in that we don’t have to trade for JR?

Jaksch is a completely different scenario.

Jaksch never locked down a position at GWS, nor at Carlton.

Tomlinson has played about every game for consistent finalists over a four year period.

The comparison is ridiculous, frankly.

Why ridiculous? Both were/are seen as surplus to the needs of the GWS footy club. Whether they played most games or few games, that's the end result. Jaksch was seen as a player who could fill a gap, he was of similar size and seen by the Blues as able to play several possies. I suspect we see Tomlinson as in a similar mold but with more ability.

And what bit about 'I'm a little concerned' don't you get? It means that I'm not sold on him. I have been underwhelmed by his last few games. I'm not alone. Would you prefer that I tell you he's the second coming? He's not but if he comes to the club I hope he does well and, as mentioned, I hope I'm wrong.

Nah, I'm sorry mate. The comparison is ridiculous because one played 7 games in two years before being traded and the other has played 139 (including 24 games each season for the last three seasons) across 8 seasons.

So one (the guy we're going after) was seen fit to last 8 years on GWS' overly talented list until he finally left as a FA. Meanwhile, your comparative player lasted two years. Laughable.

And I've never said I'm a big Tomlinson fan, I'm just not going to compare him to [censored] Kristian Jaksch.

FWIW, I was very wrong on Jake Melksham, so I will reserve judgement on Tomlinson until I've seen him play a year or two with us. Even Melksham was ordinary in his first year with us, until he moved forward.

Well, it's all academic AF. Looks like he's joining us and good luck to him. Some urgency to his game could make me a convert.

I hope we are not paying too much for him.

He is average at being versatile. He really wasn’t very noticeable during September, that may have something to do with the GW$ Jumper, but we need better stock than Tomlinson if Goodwin wants to keep his job

Serviceable . Not exactly the three really  quick mids we desperately require.

Hey DD.  Well I would have recruited pickett and personally had the ability to handle him.

I doubt you have the ability to handle yourself.

Personally, I'd go hard for Beveridge. Clarkson IP and with our midfield, he would set us up beautifully.

I see that Tomlinson rated 19th for all player stats in his Prelim... and better than 14 players in GF by the same measure. A lot of sense has been expressed here about his likely influence at MFC, however, he was quite a way from being the least effective player in his two most recent finals.

None are free agents though. Tomlinson is a freebie.

Really?   I have no doubt at all.  In fact, sounds like he does it to excess.

Appropriate post, some expecting every player we bring in to be a star.

"Going fishing" is a nice idea, but what you're advocating is that instead of targeting players who are available, we instead speculatively see if contracted players want to jump ship.

Of course, you have no idea whether the club is or isn't asking the question (or at least will start asking the question now that Richmond's season is over).

But if your best argument against taking Tomlinson is that we should instead be "going fishing", I think you need better arguments.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
