Wouldn't think Weid would have got a big increase to be honest. What other players have we re-signed this year who would have had big rises?

Would think any rise Weid (and probably Frost) got would have been cancelled out by the reduction in Jones' new deal. Guessing of course.

Weideman took a few dollars as too did Brayshaw and Tom Mac last year. Add Frost as well.

In the case of the last three the problem is that our medium term projections would have had them signing at lower figures but their re-signing co-incided with major form improvements. Lewis and Garlett decreases would have been budgeted for a while.

I suspect Jones is one of the first to pay the cost of the unbudgeted increases. Hibberd could be next. The other unknown is the increase in total player payments following the next TV negotiations.

I don't know figures obviously, as none of us would, but gut feel is Weid and Frost wouldn't have had big pay rises. Weid due to his form, and Frost due to his career to date. Jones last signed an extension after winning 3 consecutive Blueys, so his pay cut would have those minor pay rises more than covered IMO.

Brayshaw and TMac would have already been in considerations for this year so I wouldn't think their contracts would make much change to our budget for outside players this year. Just as Lewis and Garlett leaving would have been figured in.

From memory, when the TPP changed last time everyone got a raise across the board.

It's the next couple of years that are the tester more than this one IMO.

We have to hope Mahoney manages things well and that we can turn the ship around a bit so weren't not relying solely on money being the attraction.

Yes, good point, plus Mahoney and co have a number of FD positions to fill, which may influence attracting players over the next couple of years.

Don't do a GNF 11, no riddles (some of us aren't smart enough to dissect them!).

Jack Newnes...

Probably the best of what's left

Agree.  If we got Newnes and Tomlinson that would be HUGGGGGE. Need Richardson to get into Newnes ear. Offer a 4 year deal.  He is a very good player.

Newnes stats and ball use efficiency very ordinary towards the end of season. Saints/Ratten would be happy to let him go I would think. Richo maybe a fan of his but Ratten not so...

Newnes would benefit from a change of clubs.

Basil

Both Tomlinson and Newnes can kick the footy. I watched the Giants v Bulldogs game and skilful delivery of the footy into forward 50 is critical.

Hmm.

Not bloody Sam Jacobs?!

S Jacobs > sauce > tomato sauce > napoli sauce > basil required ingredient

Tell me I’m wrong!

Someone stated elsewhere that Jamie Elliot was a free agent and in MFC sights. Maybe that is the other free agent. Not sure I like the idea but have to trust the footy dept.

I would love Jamie Elliott, if he can stay fit. Can’t see him leaving the Pies, tho’.

If that’s the case... Yes to Elliot.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

  • PREGAME: St. Kilda

With just over two weeks until their opening match of the 2026 AFL Premiership season, the Demons are already well on the path to redemption and have the Saints firmly in their sights ahead of their mid-March clash at the MCG. What do you think the team will look like when they run out on to the G?

  • REPORT: Richmond

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.

  • VOTES: Richmond

Kozzy Pickett was the man of the match last week and has a vote lead over backup ruck Max Heath who didn't play this week and 5 votes over former Saint Jack Steele. Who gets the votes in this weeks shortened match win over the Tigers? Your votes please. 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 & 1.

  • GAMEDAY: Richmond

It's Game Day and the 2026 AFL Premiership season is almost upon us as the Demons take to the field for their final practice match before the first ball is kicked in anger in 16 days time. What are you expecting to see from the Dees today as they take on the Tigers at Mars Stadium in Ballarat?
