Lord Nev 13,512 Posted July 22, 2019 Author Posted July 22, 2019 Not really worth it's own thread, but Malthouse has put the feelers back out there. Would he be worth looking at for a Director Of Coaching type role? Feel like we need some more structure and support around Goodwin and Mick obviously has the experience, and now that Pert has been around a year he would be able to ascertain as to whether it would work in tandem with Goody. 1 Quote

If the rumours are true that we will be trying to lure Brendan Bolton then that would be a huge get! I like Ben Matthews as our midfield coach, i think he has shown with our young on ball brigade that he is capable of developing good midfielders. I would add someone like a Brett Kirk next to him. Agree except for Ben Mathews, get Yze, Green, Bruce, Yeats, hell even Balls Grinter, Lets get the firm that knows something about building a winning culture!! Quote

Dee Dee 1,145 Posted July 22, 2019 Posted July 22, 2019 Adem Yze’s the bloke who interests me. He’s now had many years of experience working at Hawthorn in what is a very winning culture and works directly with Clarkson on match days. I think he was backline coach for a time during their premiership period. 6 Quote

The biomechanics. The set up, the address, the hands, the balance, the approach, the lining up, the concentration, the ball drop, the execution and the follow through. And there's other bits and pieces as well. And then lots & lots of practice. We've got any number of players who fail in a number of the above areas. So the problem needs to be addressed at the source of the problem. Not the A-end. The poor execution is a symptom. A very bad symptom. So we need skills coaches in specific areas. At least 2 and maybe even 3. For a professional sport we still see amateur standards with regards to the skills. How good are our players on their opposite side? Both by hand and by foot. I'd give us a collective 2/10. As for our preferred side ... 6/10. And I'm being generous. And our overhead marking skills aren't good either - especially in the forward line. 4/10 How do you win a flag with those ratings? The answer is you don't. Our endeavour, energy, effort, ball winning skills, hard ball gets, clearances & contested work is quite good. But we continually butcher the ball when we do get it. Lucifers Hero 40,716 Posted July 23, 2019 Posted July 23, 2019 (edited) We could do with a real fwd coach!! Don't know who our fwd coach was in 2016 but it wasn't Chaplin as 2017 was his first AFL coaching gig. Not one has a career as an AFL forward so how on earth can they teach players forward craft they haven't experienced let alone been successful at. It is no wonder our players can't get separation or run to the right places to connect with mids. It is no wonder they then lose confidence and look to pass it off or miss set shots. And it is worth noting that only Garlett has AFL experience as a forward prior to joining mfc. The rest have been 'taught' forward craft by the above Defenders turned fwd coaches! With defenders as coaches it isn't surprising they think converted backmen/mids (Mcdonald, Melksham, ANB), kids or ex VFL players will get the job done. It seems to me there is little appreciation of the need to put in the appropriate resources to teach them how to be AFL level forwards. Please don't tell me we have to use the players that we have. We had good experience forwards (Watts, Kent, Hogan) and while there were good reasons for letting them go they were not replaced with experienced forwards. Forward play is a specialist craft and deserves to have at least some specialist forward players and some specialist and experienced forward coach. What we have is just not good enough. In fact it is laughable to expect winning scores with converted mids and defenders. And it certainly doesn't help to change the forward 'coach' every 12 to 18 months. Recipe for inconsistency which is exactly what we have. I have said elsewhere a first rate forward coach has to be our 1st priority. And it wouldn't hurt to have a ball-movement coach to help develop some connection with mids. Edited July 23, 2019 by Lucifer's Hero 3 1 Quote
Ted Lasso 19,586 Posted July 23, 2019 Posted July 23, 2019 I would certainly look at getting someone like Nick Reiwoldt in to help the forwards with leading patterns etc even in a part time capacity, we can get the ball in there but anything that gives us better looks is worth considering. Blake Caracella is talked about glowingly by everyone he deals with though i suspect he could be in the mix for one of the senior vacancies. 1 Quote

Malthouse would not want to go within a bulls roar of the MFC and neither should we be entertaining the idea of someone whose time has well and truly passed coming to the club. Too negative, old and grumpy for my liking. ( oh, that describes a small percentage of demonlanders ) me, not included Quote

( oh, that describes a small percentage of demonlanders ) me, not included I think Malthouse harbours some sort of long standing grudge against the MFC that pre dates most of us here, same as Sheedy and Matthews , never has anyone of them had a positive word to say about the MFC and love to sink the boot in ( or raise an elbow like the later always did) Quote
