He stands to poll 0 this year. Richmond traded Deledio despite consistently polling 10-15 every year from 2012-2016.

    Two weeks ago I would have labelled trading Brayshaw as 'a very brave decision'. Then he started repeatedly hand-balling back over the top of his head to the opposition? JTFC what was he thinking? Let's all hope that's a one-off aberration; in which case why shop him around?

    Just wondering, do people still think he 'bleeds red and blue' and there's no chance the club would trade him?

    I love him, but something is not right with Gus and if he played for another team we'd all be saying he doesn't look happy and could want out.

    His experiencing what Tyson experienced. Old inside mids getting priority and him pushed out to the wing because we have failed to draft any decent wingers in the past decade.

    I would agree wholeheartedly. This time last year he was part of the AFL's most potent midfield with Max, CLarrie & Harmesy and they were clicking well together. Now he is seemingly the 6th option and has been asked to play as a HFF, WInger, Fwd Pocket . He is not getting the consistent minutes to gel with the system. We have a midfield today with Preuss, Jones,Lewis and Viney  and Clarrie was pushed out at times. We complain about our lack of connectivity. It all starts in the middle .

    We would be trading low. You dont sell a comidity low for an unknown prospect. We wouldnt get a top 10 pick for him and anything outside of that is speculative. We have a lot to work with - with Brayshaw. Currently  though he is out of form, looks really weak and disheartened. Id definitely keep him though. But he needs to strengthen up.

    Form slump for a whole season would be cause for concern in some way though wouldn't it? In one way or another.

    Putting the trade hypotheticals aside for a sec, my gut feel is just genuine worry that everything is ok with him tbh. Not based on anything, don't want people to get any innuendo from that in any way, but he just looks 'off' and down this year.

    Brayshaw seems lost.  I would give him one more year to get super fit.  He is a far better player than what he is showing.  Symptom of MFC disease,  as someone said earlier,  the list need a kick up the clacker in the off season.

    The commonly used term “second year blues” is one that covers a whole of season temporary form slump, so it must happen a lot if it has its own name. Obviously it’s not Gus’ second year, although it is the year after his first very good one. 

    I think it’s confidence and that’s it. He needs a game where the cards fall his way and it will reset his mindset. We saw it happen almost overnight with TMac. No doubt Brayshaw will do his knee or get concussed on the day he finds his though, given 2019 luck.

    I hope so. But then the question has to be asked, why hasn't he been dropped to find some form/confidence?

    Last year, his very good one, he was 'dropped' at the start of the season to help his development and have him readjust and it worked wonders, so why not do it this year? Why just keep running him down?

    I hope you are correct but he looks like he is not enjoying playing at the moment.

    Dropping a player to give them confidence seems upside down doesn’t it? It’s one of the great footy fan Furphys I reckon.

    Anyway, two reasons I wouldn’t drop him. 1) even half going, he’s still better than the next best Casey player. Would anyone genuinely prefer JKH or C.Wagner in the side?

    2) because it’s AFL confidence he needs. So goes back to the VFL and gets 40 touches. So what? He knows full well the AFL NQRs and part timers making up the VFL aren’t a patch on the players he’d be up against in the big time.

    I think we just need to calm down and sit tight. Keep working with him, coaching him and tuning him, and it’ll come.

    Equally, no unhappy player ever looks in form. So if he is out of form and unhappy and we are a professional club what is he doing in the seniors?

    If we're going to wonder why our team has seemingly gone back to being mentally soft, hunted, low on confidence and lacking intent, then I put it to you that Goodwin's consistent favouring of certain players at selection despite performance is hurting us culturally as a team this year.

    It says a lot about us that Gus  lack of form is no a big footy story. hard questions would be being asked if it was happening at a power club.

     I talked about this on the post game. I am worried about his welfare. He has suffered multiple concussions and I was reading some info on what effect these have on a person's mental health. Neuroscientists have discovered they can produce new feelings of anxiety and increase or renew existing feelings of anxiety. We do not know what these concussions have done to his mental state. I too feel he has lost his confidence and love of the game. I'm not saying this is true but it is just an observation. 

    I hope he is being looked after and we do not read about his problems in the future.

    I love Angus, but he's been pushed out to the wing because he's not accountable as an inside mid......consequently not happy & a reason for his lack of enthusiasm.  Also your comment about 'old mids'  getting priority......that is so true & is where some of our issues start.

    JKH & C Wagner have more than deserved their recall & will provide more enthusiasm & pace. Coaching dept. have no balls.

    Kennedy Harris was spudding it up at Casey today. Showing Goodwin what he really is like. Wagner had a very good game. I just don’t ever see him translate it at AFL level. Baker had some good moments today.

      A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

      Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

      Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form.     • REPORT: Richmond

      The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.
