No need to worry, the AFL will be selling cone of silence for only $999.

You can also get them in your club colours, no, no, this just in from Gill, all clubs and supporters will not be allowed to wear club colours, because they could cause people to have too much enjoyment on game day.

You can't abuse your own. Just sit in a Melbourne member's area and find out why. So let me get this right. The AFL states that u cant 'abuse' your own or oppositon players, umpires or other supporters. What's left? "Come on Dee's"? FFS.

The AFL seems to have left open the option of abusing AFL HQ.

When did abusing people become synonymous with enjoying a day at the footy?

Absolutely agree. If we just won every game by 20 goals and got every free kick I'd have a very pleasant day and no one would cop any abuse.

I've tried to avoid (sometimes unsuccessfully) commenting about Umpires in recent threads but this latest farce has me unable to stop myself.

Back in the late 80's I worked with and went for a run with an AFL ump (over 250 games) on a regular basis. I was on the fence at the G when this particular Ump ran past after paying a rather dubious free against a Melbourne player and I yelled out "he dropped his knees you stupid maggot". Recognizing my voice his head snapped around and he yelled back "I'll see you Monday!"

My point is; it's an Australian tradition to abuse your mates. Yes, there is too much venom in the abuse thrown at umpires sometimes. Always has been always will be. However, the AFL attempting to sanitize the game and the patrons to the extent they are now going is just another example of how they have lost the plot completely.

Blatant mistakes to support AFL expectations of winners and losers, favouritism -- players holier than thou and club preferences, influence of the AFL gate receipts conundrum determining winners, losers and those teams allowed to 'catch up' in their scoring during games. Fix these recurring errors in the game or expect umpire abuse. Grandstanding umpires onfield attempting to capture the limelight for the public's entertainment or self-gratification (eg: Razor). Penalise the umpires heavily for affecting game outcomes - even with the slightest indication of repetitive behaviours. All clubs' supporters are due for a fair shake and an even playing field without the goalposts moving ... as these do ... and such supporters can pick it all 'a mile off', without difficulty.

Abuse of umpires is possibly fairy nuff in the aforementioned scenarios and to some supporters, there may be many more that are highly irritating; but at the end of the day, it is not supporters who bend the game.

Abuse of the England cricket team and its members is definitely an Australian tradition dating back well over a century. Abuse of players (eg: that which happen to Goodes) just ain't on - that is most definitely un-Aussie. If someone abuses me for this post, it will have no impact so feel free.

Under Gil's rule the AFL has gone PC mad in all sorts of areas.   I don't object to them have responsible community attitudes but I do object them being the social conscience of everything in society. They are a football controlling body not  society engineers.

Why won't the system let me correct a spelling mistake?

OK, so now I know I'm not allowed to call the umpire a green maggot.  But I'm allowed to THINK that he is, right?

What happens if I say "I think you're a green maggot, umpire"?

Let's solve this 'umpire abuse' problem once and for all. Let's have another umpire appreciation round. That will double the respect for umpires. One has made a huge difference.... two will be tremendous. Should stop the haters dead in their tracks.

Indirect statement to perfection. You are explaining something. If I was at the footy and you called that out, I would feel much richer for the knowledge that my opinions match someone else's.

Does anyone know why we don't have full time umpires? Surely it wouldn't be a cost factor?  Clubs now have enormous staff levels and a myriad of assistants yet the umpires are still part time.

Considering the sport is by far the hardest sport to officiate,

They might end up gambling, or on drugs or something ?

I’ve tried to explain to you all that the western world is/ has been manipulated by thought policing morons who are indoctrinated by a neo Marxist platform that has been running since The ‘70’s, no I’m not joking.

They will attempt to control your morality, speech and personal beliefs.

You must resist at every opportunity and tell these maggit to eat [censored] wherever you see them, be it AFL, schools, media or the workplace.

I expect this comment may even be deleted as some people find individual expression too confronting.

If you "express yourself" by abusing people then I'll be glad to see you banned from the footy.

The word Maggot is not abusive. if one decides to add adjectives to Maggot like yellow or dead, the description itself would probably not stand up in court....anyone elaborate??

I have a pet maggot at home who is very good at cleaning up morsels on the floor, or in the bin and its the words yellow and dead that upset him the most.......his name is "razor" and he lives in my shaving kit......

Yelling out at the football is all part of the theatrics, people have to learn to not take things so personally or be offended on behalf of someone else.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
