Jeff's best is better than any small forward we have by a country mile.

His worst, however, is abysmal. 

It's Essendon at the G and it's time to play him. We have absolutely zero opportunist dead-eyes and Jeff has money in the bank when it comes to making a goal from nothing. Time to back him in.

I tend to agree, its too big a job for 1 small fwd to create enough pressure. if there's only 1 small fwd the oppo aren't too worried about him, but throw another 1 or 2 into the mix and defenders become a lot more jumpy with ball in hand as its harder to keep an eye on where 2 or 3 small fwds are at, that can chase you down. get Jeffy in and tell him to chase, tackle and create pressure, to stop teams walking it out of our F50, because once they do they usually go all the way to goal up the other end.

Agree on all counts.

He lost his spot last year because he completely stopped putting pressure on and trapping the ball inside 50.

My feeling is something was not right for Jeff last year, perhaps some off field personal stuff (and to be clear i'm not speaking in code and implying drug use).

The previous year his pressure was fantastic and IIRC correctly he snagged 40 goals as well. The signs were pretty god in the JLT game before he did his shoulder (ironically by tackling hard). And we are desperately in need of both his goals kicking instincts and zip.

Even if a touch underdone i'd love to see him in. Of any position on the ground the crumbing small forward is the one that won't expose a lack of condition too much.

Time for Jeffy to spark us into action.

yeah ANB is pushing up to the contest as usual, but is having little impact, which is costly as it usually leaves us outnumbered inside F50. it might be time to change his role slightly and leave him deeper in the F50 as a crumber/pressure fwd, or send him back to Casey to regain some touch.

ANB stay in the side because of GPS numbers, pure and simple. Covers a lot of territory. At the moment we do not have the players to cover his spread and ability to cover/hold up the uncontested mark. So like or not i can't see him being dropped at the moment, his frustrating turnovers and errors notwithstanding.

That running is a big factor is his disposal and fumbling i reckon. He is often spent went he gets the ball. That first goal he missed against Port was good example. I was sitting above him in the Posnford and he was completely stuffed and sucking in huge breathes when he tried to settle for that kick.

@binman whats the point covering all this territory if he is making absolutely no impact whatsoever? Yes he clocks up the Kms, but that doesnt excuse his fumbles or lack of ability to keep his feet. He fumbles even in the 1st qtr of games? If he is doing that so early of the game from running around then he is cooked for the rest of the game, and that already putting us at an disadvantage. 

All good and well to clock up 17km per game, but fits into the bracket of running around like a headless chook. Has no hurt factor whatsoever and will kick your 2 to 3 goals against sides like Gold Coast or Carlton. When it comes to the big teams, he has little to no effect whatsoever. 

The Sooner Goodwin wakes up and drops him the better.

yeah I agree, his running efforts does seem to effect his disposal and hands at times. but he needs to be better or else what's the point of it all. he seems to get in the way of his team mates a lot, so do we really need him going into the contest? it might be another part of Goodies game plan that needs looking at, considering how much our fwd line is getting beaten atm. I mean if I was an oppo coach, without a doubt, i'd be telling ANBs man to let him go, drop off him and stay deeper because he's not going to hurt you with ball use and they'll just bomb it to you anyway.

I agree, ANB will stay in because he's one of the hardest workers in the team, whereas nearly all and sundry on here last year want Garlett dropped and delisted because he just didn't work hard enough. Truth is neither would have done much last week as we made it too easy on the Geelong defenders, but when we're up and going both can make a big contribution (not one or the other, same and the Frost v OMac debate). If ANB is out chasing and harassing hard it should create opportunities for others rather than himself, which is often unseen, and not necessarily a bad thing as he's clearly not the best finisher. Whereas Garlett  needs to keep pressuring but so he has the opportunity to finish, that's his role. 

I was very surprised last week that we didn't drop ANB into defense when it was clear their smaller guys and mids were getting easy access to goal, I would think he could be used to do a role there when needed as well, not just to help keep the ball forward.

I think though that the impact he has, such that it is, is that he gets across to limit uncontested possessions and when he can't stop the kick stop them running off or slow them down. Failing to do so is killing us atm.

That said I agree with your criticisms. I just think he will stay in the side until those ks can get covered. he and Lockhart might end up fighting for spot and Lockhart might well win that battle.

The problem is we've taken a ton of risks at selection by playing under done players (Jones, Viney, Melksham, May) and most of them have failed spectacularly. 

I hope Garlett plays this week, but I also don't want him being a non-entity because he's played 1 quarter of football since March 1.

Re ANB, he is generally the team leader in “pressure acts”.

Week 1 he had 30 (Spargo 9, Wagner 13): For a team who’ve allowed the opposition to transition with little pressure in the first 2 rounds, I suspect the coaches will be sticking with him. Yes he’s disposal isn’t great but our ball movement in general hasn’t really helped him or the other forwards.

ANb's not quick enough to play deep forward, strong enough nor smart enough intuitively.   He has to play in the wide part of the ground.

Jones is an option for your proposal.   With his effort strength, and is smarter, more desperate, harder.

and you reckon ANBs not quick enough but you want Jones forward? ANB kicked about 30 goals last year so id say he's better around goals than your criteria gives him credit for. I guess it must make sense to you, but I have to disagree because it makes little sense to me.

So what?? so he covers more territory than the Leyland brothers but goes walkabout often, does not impact on games, misses clinch goals when needed , then kicks goals when whole team firing.

Sadly with the exception of our best 6, it is difficult to rank our players on form or their likely exclusion or inclusion.

That's a pretty sad bunch of small forwards. Jeffy is a couple seasons out of his best form, jayden and jay can't kick. We need to target a specialist small forward in either the draft or via trading

That doesn't really help the situation right now, we need pace and we need to be able to put pressure on the defenders coming out.
