It's convenient for him to say that, though.  It's his out.  He either didn't know anything and is trying to look like he did, or blatantly lied to everyone when he didn't need to say anything.  I mean, why say everything is fine when it's going to come out that it isn't?  It makes him look like a fool either way.

He got caught out lying about the Andrew Gaff scenario last year. Then went into hiding after he was caught out.

In regards to the Jones situation, if Sparrow had nailed that goal then i dont think this would be a serious discussion point. I am backing Jones to have a big one. I also do believe that he still needs to have moments as an inside midfielder. Does his best work in close, but also at times we are exposing his lack of speed put on a wing.

i think if we had been 10 goals up it would have gone un-noticed - it was a crucial time in the match and the ball went up the other end for a goal and so it was a 12 point turn around. Unfortunately it seems time is catching up with Chunk - his decision making and disposal is not what it used to be.

Agree with your comments Chook. At the same time, we had a whole team of players making mistakes throughout the game. Many players making more mistakes than Jones. The focus on Jones is a bit unfair, but was highlighted as a mistake due to the late stage in the match and the consequences of the turnaround. If Sparrow had kicked the goal then it would have been different.  The fact is the team was playing poorly and trying to scrabble its way back into a game that could have been well outside its reach if Port had kicked more accurately. In the second half, Port was the superior side, looked like the likely winner, and the Dees were playing catch up.

Jones's decision making and disposal has always been poor, or at best, fair to middling. Never endowed with pace, I think he has got slower and he is being caught more easily.  He reminds me a bit of Ablett, however, Ablett's reading of the play and his skills are a cut above those of Nate.

A serious problem re Jones is his forte is as an inside mid but he's a bit off the pace for that now. He's not really that good at much else. I say that as just being capable isn't sufficient these days.We have better players coming on. It seems Jones injuries over the years might have caught him.

At the same time, BB he remains in our best 22 and will do so for the season. However, the question becomes what about 2020 ?

Exactly the same issue as with Lewis. It's all well and good to say these guys are past it and are no longer best 22, but there is nobody putting their hand up to take these spots. When the alternative is to give Wagner, Stretch or Kennedy-Harris a 10th or 12th chance, I'll stick with Jones and Lewis all day, every day.

I hope he isn't...in our best 22 later this season. No slight towards him.

You do realise his dropped mark 40m out and following slingshot back to Port's goal was a 12 point turnaround? That momentum killer was a 'game over' moment.

Of course I do!  What has that got to do with examining why he dropped the mark and whether he squibbed, choked or whatever?

I'd imagine this response along with a number of others will be deleted but do you really have to couch everything around how much you dislike Saty?  You started it with your quip about Saty's relationship with the players when someone asked you to do training reports.  The usual suspects including the much loved Moonie and Wise jumped on.

Fair dinkum Dazzle.  If everyone got suspended getting something wrong on this site not many would post.  What is it about "some people like Saty and some don't" you don't understand?  Why is it you want to shut down and bully Saty?

I've been to training quite often lately and guess what.  The players speak to him, the coaches speak to him and often go out of their way to say hello.  He's good mates with Nev.  Are you questioning his character because he likes Saty?  For all your training reports have their merits Saty often provides information not available elsewhere.  And if you think he isn't told things and keeps them quiet you're kidding yourself.

Live and let live mate.  You single handedly diverted this threat to Saty and I for one find that childish.  Grow up.

Tom Mc looked like he was 60 out when he passed it to Jones who was about 45 out directly in front.

Plain took his eyes off it.

By the by Swallow probably could have passed to Harmes rather than shoot at goal. Tough kick to hit but he was free.

I seriously doubt Jones had squibbed anything in his entire career. Whatever it was it was not that.

Just wondering what your basing 'in our best 22 on'?

Last weeks performance?

Or do we put in quicker, more agile younger players (like Port did) who will run & compete & totally accountable?

20 seconds to go, 40 metres out, 3 points down.  Who do you want kicking it?  Jones, Petracca, Gawn, Spargo, ??

Chunk has delivered captain’s goals, and will again.  This was a bad mistake, and I imagine he recognises it.  However, he has a lot to offer.  The issue may be that it is either him or Lewis for the HB role, as he has probably been superseded in the midfield (except for a few chunky rotations..).

The buck stops at the top and as the captain more is expected of you than the foot soldiers. Unfair? maybe but it goes with the job. The fact is both our captains were terrible.

I agree Baghad, the players and coaching staff do speak to supporters at training. Between 1987 and 1997 I rarely missed an in season training session and the players often spoke to me along with a few other supporters who regularly attended training. Among the 20 or so regulars was the Ox's Mother Mary who always spoke to everyone around, another Lady by the name of Marie was a regular attendee along with her daughter who later married one of the players { Todd McHardy I think was his name.}My daughter who attended together with me became one of the stats group for the under 19"s, reserves and seniors whilst Northey and Balme  were coaching and she was given knowledge that was not available to everyone as was I by some players.

Like who?

We should be serious flag threat this year, and players like Jones generally perform consistently well.  Yes they have their "off" moments/games, but they are generally reliable.

Trying to blood a kid  will see far greater inconsistencies, and will impact our ability to win a premiership this year.

The more simpler way of saying it - we have a greater chance of winning a flag this year with Jones in our side, as opposed to the kid that you are wanting to replace him with, unless that kid is banging the door down at Casey, which at this stage isn't happening.

Just maybe we've gotten ahead of ourselves...maybe.

Maybe 2020 is more probable than 2019...maybe

I have never really thought that either Jones or Lewis would hold up our cup....but they may well help those who do .

That's footy.

Funnily enough and to your surprise i actually don't dislike the bloke. Would take a lot for me to dislike someone on here. He says things i dont agree with and i say things he doesnt agree with. Do i lose sleep over it? No lol

He has self confessed that he goes out of his own way to deliberately bait people on here, which is also fine because we've all done it.. but i am sure you personally skim over that and dont take notice of what he does.

If you actually ask the bloke, i am sure he doesnt take anything personally i say, we bait each other and sometimes might even find agreeing with each other on certain issue which might also come as a suprise to you?

Relax mate, you've carried on a little bit here. .....

There is absolutely no reason why we shouldn't be thinking about winning a premiership this year.  It's absolutely possible that we can do it, and I would expect Jones to be part of the group that collect their medals on the day.  If he isn't, then I want it to be because someone has banged the door down at Casey, created their opportunity, then run with it all the way until the end of September.

2020 is a different story, but I'm happy to trade in a player that can come straight in and impact until, again, a younger player bangs that door down again.

The interesting tidbit is this week's inclusion of Lockhart.  Is it at Jones' expense?  Will it be due to injury or form?  Time will tell.

Absolutely Bub. Jones didn't squib the contest. He just royally stuffed up what was practically un-stuff-upable.

agree.  The only possible criticism is that he should have taken responsibility to kick the goal rather than looking downfield to see if anyone was a better option.  And if there was someone there and he didn't pass it and then missed the goal, we'd never hear the end of it.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
