Cotchin did, for a worse hit that put Shiel out of a Preliminary Final.

That’s a great point .... I often wonder if that’s one of our players in the same predicament in the next couple of years whether we would be afforded the same level of leniency.... with a grand final on the line

barry hall in 2005 , Aaron Hamill 1999 and Cotchin in2017

Comments are pretty much the truth.

Interesting from other clubs supporters too.

It's touch footy now...a joke...a shame

Im sorry, but how did Mumford get off the other week?

Can someone explain that??

There's a lesson to be learned somewhere in this saga.  I hope it's well learned.

Don’t crunch people unnecessarily after they’ve given off the ball.

Nupp

Take it to the appeals board, get some adjudicators without an agenda to deliberate whether it was suspension worthy.

An unjust outcome IMHO, but nevertheless, May shouldn't have put himself or the club in this position. Hope the club however kicks up a huge stink this year whenever similar incidents are swept under the carpet (and they will be).

If i wasn't a Dees supporter, i'd have no interest in the AFL. Outside of the MFC, i have no interest in it anymore.

Local footy is soooooooooooo much more enjoyable without all the bureaucracy (though that's now starting to seep in at the grassroots level too, thanks to the AFL's incompetence). Local clubs and leagues are struggling more than ever, but let's just paint over the cracks by wasting time and money in AFLX. FMD.

We should be happy as we now know the true definition of medium impact, which is “ it could have been worse”.

I'm cracking a beer to deal with this.

You would have cracked one if he got off. Win win.

The tribunal is a joke. The MRP is a joke. Steven May doing something borderline suspendable in a praccy match is a joke.

Clowns the lot of them.

Yeah because depending who you are and which club you play for you might get awarded a free kick and score a goal.

Gotta agree Jaded. May shouldn't have put himself in this situation in the first place. All it's done is remind us all how inept the current power-brokers are, which just leads to frustration.

Urgent IQ test for May please.

Yeah it's bull[censored] but let's take a positive it puts May on notice now, no doubt this won't have gone down well with the coaches or club leaders. The decision like it or not is the right one in the AFL eyes. Better that May learns he's lesson now then during the year when it could potentially be a worse scenario

Why?

May did nothing wrong. After years of being called soft and bruise free, we now have hard hitters and snipers to enjoy. It's a contact sport. I would rather Melbourne play on or above the line than below it.

Why? He has shown from day one he takes no prisoners.

He clearly did do something wrong otherwise he wouldn't have been suspended. I don't agree with it but like I orginally said the AFL has in their eyes made the right call, we all can disagree with it but the end of the day May has got a week suspension... I personally would much prefer he doesn't do it & miss weeks than "play on or above the line" I think our contested style of footy speaks for itself, we don't need incidents like the weekend to be branded "tough"

Did you complete year 1? It’s “his” lesson not “he’s”.

Not yet I'm actually a 6 year old...

And crunches people unnecessarily, resulting in suspension. That’s not football. It’s unnecessary thuggery.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
