Agree 100%. It’s been a poor pre season (judging by DL training and media reports)  whichever way you cut it.

Extremely late start to the season by our standards (how will we adapt?)

AFLPA imposed breaks every other week effecting continuity, especially since we started back late.

Gawn being the only player of our acclaimed midfield to have a full pre season to date.

Tons of rehabbers in any session.

While we could have as little as Jake Lever unavailable for round 1, will the gun players who have had interrupted pre seasons survive the year without injury?

Hopefully I’m jumping at shadows and we’ll be just fine.

I have been to 4 or 5 sessions this year I think and noted the high numbers in rehab but the rehab work has been pretty solid for the most part. Plenty of running of course and heaps of drills with the balls. The only players that have been limited in their preparation to the point it will impact on round 1 availability are Jones (laps, boxing only for many sessions) and Lever, laps and more laps and perhaps Baker (laps, more laps). As I mentioned in yesterday’s training thread, I spoke to Justin Plapp who was really unbeat about the rehab group and that players were now coming back to full training regimes from a solid base of work that they have all been doing.

Well we didn't start training until 4 or so weeks later than usual after playing in a Prelim, so maybe thats the reason the rehab group is a bit bloated.

Anyway back on topic, 10+ minutes goalkicking practice was a guide figure, that is in the organised part of the session

A lot of players spend time before and after the session

And the pacticing is not all set shotstraight in front 40 out, a lot of the organised drills are hands of packs, off the ground, handball receive on overlap

My hope with our running ability is there will be about 4 players who need their set shot routine set, Tommy Mac who didn't miss one in the wet today, Weid and the 2 ruckmen, all the rest will be on the run, out the back etc, like a lot of the goals were last year

I'm not as concerned about goal kicking. It's the forward 50 entries that bothered me last year. If the coaches can drill into them the difference between 'kicking quickly to advantage' and 'bombing it in' we will be cherry ripe.

Thanks for the report Saty.

Gawn should be doing an hour of goal kicking practice alone. With a goal kicking coach. Petracca needs to work on his snaps as well. He kicks it far too high and allows for the ball to curl far too much than he needs to. like he'll aim 5m right of the behinds and try and kick it up high and try and curl  it around when he really just needs to aim at the middle of goals. it never curls as much as he is allowing for. I hope this post reaches him or I'll show him myself!

Yeah righto i will give it a try....

Who was the runner/s pacing our players at training?

Did you get to ask their opinion on our teams running power,?

What did the players think of having a pace-setter?

What has been the group feedback about the way we lost the Prelim?

Are we more confident going into this year after that horrendous finish?

If we could raise the money through donations (i am willing to kick in), would you buy a camera like 666 has? Your current camera is seriously rubbish.

Thanks in advance :)

Quite frankly, I'm sick and tired of reading the argy bargy that continues to derail training reports.

As much as I possibly can, I will be deleting such posts on sight and recommending banning posters (without any favour) if they stray off the topic of training and in particular if they represent personal attacks which are also likely to result in suspension or permanent bans for posters.

More than just rehabilitation, for which a late start to pre-season training would be mandatory, anyway, we have endured many 'preventative maintenance' operations lined up for surgery and close attention to reinforce a natural hesitancy to the season's pre-cursor preparations. This does not necessarily mean that we are time-poor in our readiness for 23 March and beyond. It really means that we are a responsible club. If we have a problem in this changed cycle, perhaps it is one of an inadequate pre-season dance card presented by the AFL this - and last - year. In many regards, it can be seen that the pre-season comp/offering is aiming to be another AFL gate-receipt windfall, not a legitimate series of practice games in which injury and strain-related issues may well abide but the costs in terms of player expenses can be contained and would remain relatively meaningless, for most. We must bloat and stack up our assets in cotton wool at this stage of the upcoming H&A season. In any case, our supervised training commitment this year, whilst just slightly delayed, has been prolific, well-reported, progressive and gradated, and responsible. We will in all likelihood come out of that player race on gameday with gnashing teeth, growling confrontation and sustained impetus. It could be added that we have rare depth, as well, which is full of laminated thoughts and outcomes.

Didn't get a name but was credentialed middle distace ruuner

He had Harmes leaning on the fence dry retching, spoke to Harmes after, said it was hardest he had ever run, but was already feeling better for it

There are new 2km PB's everywhere, Hunt, Jetta and Salem, 3 I know of

It's a new season, every player hurt, but as the cliche goes, learn and move on

Of course the confidence is there, but pointless otherwise

Not interested in gallery oerfect photos, have the eye to snap good action, doesn't matter if it's a bit blurry

I can see ppl being worried but your point - is pretty spot on!

its a diff game now and a high premium is placed on rehab even for niggles but the rehab group are still handled well with a lot of running & basically just miss contact drills so I don’t think it’s a bad sign we’ve had so many go through that group.

ie Gawn being only member of mid group not “interrupted” but that’s not really true - Oliver and Gus had solid work loads and haven’t really been interrupted even Trac, he’s fitter and looks dominant in sims now - it’s all just precautionary and related to the higher level of professionalism we now have down at the club: one that’s now seems as the leader in innovation and professionalism, a far cry from being the laughing stock just some years ago.

From what I’ve seen - I’m not one bit worried about starting later and the new regulations around sessions and breaks etc when there I see a group that’s hungry and that’s going full bore - with an added sense of purpose than ever before! The talk volume and clarity is sensational even Comp to Pies around corner if you watch both groups you see the difference in positive reinforcement but more importantly you hear a lot more focus words re intent and focus from players such as “Come in boys, we gotta want it more than everyone else” or “Keep playing the Melb way, we wanna dominate those gut running red time minutes that’s our edge” and so forth..

trust me - it’s a positive environment down there and one I’ve NEVER seen before! New rules another reason to feel positive - heard BMAC state this on numerous occasions ie “that new centre setup is our gold mine boys, execute and we will win”..

The goal kicking I’ve seen him do is fantastic! Went 8/9 last session I saw and his GK was solid last 6 weeks of season.

It frustrates me that a priority in goal kicking conversion hasn't been made and I will be more than happy to re-visit this post each time we lose a game due to poor conversion.

I hope you’re just as willing to re-visit your post every time we win a game with a good conversion rate.

sure. but all I'm saying is petracca shouldn't be training with the forwards and whilst preuss is good insurance for gawn I think we need a forward of true rucking height that is a good kick for goal

That is an easy option, but impossible as far as luck might be concerned.

I really agree with Dr. D on this one; we most certainly need a rucking-height forward with a deep understanding and ability to kick 'em from anywhere - hopefully from 60 metres out to the worst possible boundary location close-in to the goal mouth. Absolutely.

Preuss would be my pick for this provided that there is an excellent and regular routine coaching process for forwards in general to convert with higher accuracy than what has been historically provided. Hell, we pay them to convert, professionally.

At training, take the guys aside for some concentrated routines - someone like Schwartz or even Aaron Davey could do this - get them into habitual basics and finesses for all types of shots at goal, from all angles and from static attempts to those attempts on the run - blistering accuracy is needed to win that flag. This should be a repetitive training mantra and process - we need to be lethal in all regards to win the flag. It just ain't gonna happen if we merely assume that it will be 'right on the night', and a poor percentage return with 100 shots at goal per game is too indefinite.

Haven’t heard much about Hannan this pre season, how has he been training track watchers??

Fritta the most interesting player for mine, where does he play? Training to a high level from all reports.

Thanks for the training reports all.

In aflw the boundary umpires have been throwing the ball in from about 20 m inside the boundary line so that it ends up as a contest close to the front of the goals from anywhere inside the forward 50.   Defenders knocking the ball to a place where it might go out rather than trying to get it past 50 is not likely to continue.   More players would have to be around the contest for defenders at throw ins as well.   I'm not even sure if this is going to be trialled/accepted in JLT and season games.   Are they doing anything at training about that.

He's been in rehab. I believe it's a knee complaint.

The track watchers will be able to confirm if I'm misremembering.

It's probably confidential, but have always wanted to know the PB times of player for running and some of their weight records, curiosity has killed me over the years. Even a couple of 2km times would be much appreciated please. Do they crack 5m30sec? Under 6? I am flat out busting 20m for 5km, currently blown out to 22m for the distance. Always interested in what I could do in my salad days versus the players. PM the times if you don't want them spread around.

Agreed, it's his opinion, I just want to be thete when he expresses it to Trac, simple request

Hannan had both knees operated on to fix problems once and for all
