The former NBL basketballer spent most of the season sidelined by a hip injury incurred early in the season.

    I have seen virtually nothing of Corey in person.

    There are some real enthusiasts, but really whet do they see as his positives and what rôle do they see him filling?

    His year was ravaged by injury we never saw the best of Maynard, big year coming up.

    I haven't really seem much other than highlights from his time at Casey, but from what I can gather he is a contested ball, bull type of player.  Not sure that he has as much footy tallent, but could be important to us if we lost Vandenberg.  Depth isn't something that should be underrated in my veiw, neither having too many on ball bulls.  Asides from Viney, we had a pretty good season injury wise in the guts and I also though Vandenberg's impact in the last 6 games or so of the season was pretty important to us.

    MELBOURNE midfielder Corey Maynard has been elevated to the Club’s senior list after two seasons as a rookie.

    While a hip complaint limited Maynard to one game in 2018, GM of football operations Josh Mahoney said the Club was pleased with the development of the former basketballer.

    “Corey deserves his upgrade to our senior list. Although he had an injury interrupted season, Corey displays all the characteristics that we want in a Melbourne player,” Mahoney said.

    “We’re really happy with the way that Corey has been developing, to play in round one this season was a reward for the pre-season which he had.

    “The injury this year hampered that development, but we think that his attitude and competitiveness, that he will get back on track and we see a lot of development left in Corey.

    “He’s been in rehab since his hip operations midway through the year, he’s recovering really well.

    “With this change to our list, it provides us the opportunity to have a rookie list position available as we get towards this year’s national draft.”

    Maynard has played two games for Melbourne since crossing codes to footy as a Category B selection in the 2017 Rookie Draft.

    He previously played basketball in the NBL for the Cairns Taipans and Townsville Crocodiles, as well as with US college team, Bryant University.

    Yes.

    Looked a cut above the rest in the VFL in 2017 but his 2018 was ruined due to a serious hip injury.

    Hmm, not sure about Corey. Apparently a lovely bloke, but I'm not convinced on his footballing abilities. His kicking in particular. But with Tyson going, he's a cheap back up, so smart decision by the FD.

    More than anything this is saying we want 6 main list spots and 2 rookie spots. 7 and 1 was always going to be hard to fill.

    4 draft picks that we rate on 2 year deals. 2 rookie draftee pick ups on 1 year deals if it doesn't work out. 2 more list spots to fill some other way.

    I like Maynard as a depth option. Excellent size, really good athleticism and hard at it. Moving him to the main list is recognition for his professionalism and in some ways an incentive to get back, play some good footy and stick with us. Will have to improve his kicking and feel for the game to be a long term player but I think he'll be handy next year and in the short/medium term even if he doesn't.

    Guessing that he is more likely ready to play seniors than any raw 18 yo we select at pick 100 and has probably also shown as much or more potential than any mature age talent that gets to that point in the draft as well.  He would also have the benifits of being a known quantity in terms of his team fit and professionalism.

    Last time I spoke to him, was way ahead where they expected him to be in rehab

    As other topics show, you don't have to be a superstar if you have the attributes Goody wants and you play your role

    Last year we traded Balic in on a one year contract but not sure if that is allowed for a  Rookie upgrade.

    Its worth noting Maynard is already contracted for 2019, as a Rookie.  The announcement is silent on contract term so on the face of it, it looks like a change of status only, giving him better income. 

    I hope his contract was extended - if good enough to be upgraded then good enough to get an extra year or two.  But it is odd the announcement didn't indicate such.

    Edit:  we will use draft pick #91 or #104 to upgrade Maynard and counts as one of the three minimum draft picks we are required to take.

    Mahoney says it all and who are we to argue. 

    Although 27 he started his footy career very late so physically he should be able to go for another 5 or 6 years. 

    The later you start the more years you have left.

    Impossible to know how good he is until he plays a few Afl games.

    I was thinking the same thing Mono, with 55 years on the clock and minimal AFL under my belt there is still hope that I could become a 100 gamer?

    Seriously tough.  He was great in the 2017 Casey losing grand final. 

    Lacks too much polish for me at AFL level, but he's handy depth.

    It's watching him at training, at Casey and at AFL level.

    It comes to me a bit quicker, chap.

    I grew up with the game.

      A few years ago, the Melbourne Football Club produced a documentary about the decade in which it rose from its dystopic purgatory of regular thrashings to the euphoria of a premiership victory. That entire period could have been compressed in a fast motion version of the 2025 season to date as the Demons went from embarrassing basket case to glorious winner in an unexpected victory over the Dockers last Saturday. They transformed in a single week from a team that put in a pedestrian effort of predictably kicking the ball long down the line into attack that made a very ordinary Bombers outfit look like worldbeaters into a slick, fast moving side with urgency and a willingness to handball and create play with shorter kicks and by changing angles to generate an element of chaos that yielded six goals in each of the opening quarters against Freo.

      Round 7 gets underway in iconic fashion with the traditional ANZAC Day blockbuster. The high-flying Magpies will be looking to solidify their spot atop the ladder, while the Bombers are desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top eight. Later that evening, Fremantle will be out to redeem themselves after a disappointing loss to the Demons, facing a hungry Adelaide side with eyes firmly set on breaking into the top four. Saturday serves up a triple-header of footy action. The Lions will be looking to consolidate their Top 2 spot as they head to Marvel Stadium to clash with the Saints. Over in Adelaide, Port Adelaide will be strong favourites at home against a struggling North Melbourne. The day wraps up with a fiery encounter in Canberra, where the Giants and Bulldogs renew their bitter rivalry. Sunday’s schedule kicks off with the Suns aiming to bounce back from their shock defeat to Richmond, taking on the out of form Swans.Then the Blues will be out to claim a major scalp when they battle the Cats at the MCG. The round finishes with a less-than-thrilling affair between Hawthorn and West Coast at Marvel. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

      For this year’s Easter Saturday game at the MCG, Simon Goodwin and his Demons wound the clock back a few years to wipe out the horrible memories of last season’s twin thrashings at the hands of the Dockers. And it was about time! Melbourne’s indomitable skipper Max Gawn put in a mammoth performance in shutting out his immediate opponent Sean Darcy in the ruck and around the ground and was a colossus at the end when the game was there to be won or lost. It was won by 16.11.107 to 14.13.97. There was the battery-charged Easter Bunny in Kysaiah Pickett running anyone wearing purple ragged, whether at midfield stoppages or around the big sticks. He finish with a five goal haul.

    • CASEY: UWS Giants

      The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.
