Rare footage of the 1964 Grand Final Banners.

Brings back such great memories. Just at the end you can see the cheer squad down at the city end (known as T Section) which was standing room only but had three rows of seats. Geez we screamed our heads off that day.

Obviously a Collingwood supporter !

Mal was that you holding the Melbourne banner with the slicked down black hair ?

Comment please.

Thanks for posting that.

I wasn't there, but the saddest memory it stirs for me is that glimpse of the old members' stand.  I hate the fact that we tore it down. Only made it in there once (2000 Grand Final on a borrowed ticket) but I'll never forget it. Sorry my kids will never have the pleasure.

Banners were a tad different back then.

Never had black hair. Fairly ginger back then but a very nice shade of grey now. Haha

Wonderful history .

Of course the banners were only made for finals. Not sure when they became common place during the home and away season.

Wonderful memories of the old stands. Mind you other than the two members stand they were concrete monoliths or as it has become trendy to call them... brutal architecture.

Yes. The Colonwood one didn’t fall apart.

Ah .... bye gone days.

I grew up at the 'G' during the 70' and 80's.
It was like a big tin shed that could hold 100,000 people.
Get more than 50,000 with a good game and the joint would fair dinkum shake.
I miss the atmosphere it created.

Hah. "Keep walking". That's rich as I am two weeks after a total knee replacement and it's still quite painful to walk. Good chance to catch up on old replays.

Mal, do you remember Mick Pearce? I thought there was a black and white  clip of him holding a run-through circa 1964. I remember Mick sitting with the cheer squad in the 1980's. He worked up at Buller and didn't get to many games.

Re the (fence) banners: from memory they were 'assigned' to cheer squad members as they were taken from ground to ground. I know I had charge of the "Never say die Demons" for a short period of time.

I do. Boy we had some great times back then. A funny story with that banner. We made it at a friends place and we ran it up the footpath to spray it but were in horror when we lifted it up as the message was on the path. Got into a bit of trouble.

I recall when the biggest banner was unfurled, but I can't remember the wording: " .... the Magnificent Masters of the MCG". Can you complete/correct?

One of my funniest moments was sleeping out for a GF ticket (club allocation) in 1965 with my Dons mate. We were warned that officers would be patrolling Yarra Park so we scrambled up onto a ledge on the old Northern stand above the ticket box. We both slept in and awoke to see a queue 100m long snaking up towards Jolimont station. We meekly scrambled down and took up a spot at the tail of the queue.

Masters of the MCG. Would love to make another one for next season onwards. I also remember people sleeping on that ledge.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

The Demons have slumped to their worst start to a season since 2012, falling to 0–4 after a more spirited showing against the Cats at Kardinia Park. Despite the improved effort, they went down by 39 points, and the road ahead is looking increasingly grim.
