I reckon Pannell is a distant relative linked in some way to the Norm Smith curse. This is good news.

What about Nicholls? Any chance he retires any chance soon? I really don’t want to have to go rogue and smash anymore kneecaps...

No surprise as he has been battling injury all year. The umps are an ageing lot and a few week ago as many as 20% of the group were injured. They certainly don't like the bounce.

Personally, I think we should be more respectful of the umpires, particularly when they're announcing their retirements. I get frustrated, too, with the decisions at times, but I don't think for one minute they're biased in any way. And it must be an almost impossible game to umpire.

So, good luck to Troy and Justin and thanks for your service.

The ABC interviewed an umpire last Friday night who was that weekend umpiring his 350th. His account made me appreciate the increasing difficulty of their job

I agree that it's become increasingly difficult to umpire our game due to so many stupid rules changes, and the different interpretations they then allow for.

Nicholls however is either a deadset cheat or he's blind. There is no way to interpret someone taking possession of the ball, then being barrelled into from behind and then having their head belted as anything but a free kick... not holding the ball! He's not an umpires *sshole that useless c*nt. Get rid of him!

The higher-ups need to leave the rules alone and stop trying to shape the game into what they think tv audiences want. The game is fine, and the more it's tinkered with the worse it becomes.

Can definitely agree with you on that. Umpire Andrew Mitchell is family friend of ours and he’s had all sorts or injury troubles. Been umpiring hurt all year as they are short of people to do the job.

Agree it’s a tough job, particularly with the subjective nature of the rules as they currently stand. What I can tell you is that most umps do barrack/follow a team and as such it must be very difficult to umpire games involving thier favoured team. Indesputable is the home crowd advantage that some clubs enjoy (which we most certainly do not benefit from) which could very easily be viewed as bias.

Hear what your saying, but when you watch games with people who don’t follow the dees, and they regularly say we are getting the s h I t end of the stick then one can’t help speculate that their is some kind of bias present.

I agree...except for Nicholls. He completely mugged us down in Tassie against North a year or two back, and everytime I get frustrated at a decision, I look up to see his bald melon responsible for it.

Troy Parnell without a doubt one of, if not the worst umpire ever and l mean ever. However every time l saw that  number 28 we were half way to a loss. Just hated us. No feel for the game and almost wanting to be centre of attention. Thought he knew it but knew F A about the game. Must have picked up most of his tips from Razor Ray. Better off without him.

My apologies that I didn’t pass this through your old man care-o-meter. Will be sure to check with you next time. Perhaps this photo will be more your cup of tea.

Did us no favours at all umpiring the Saints game. I thought he’d already hung up his whistle during that game and was just having a weekend jog.

The umpires are doing a job. Mostly they're doing a job on the dees. The AFL brook no criticism of umpires, not to protect themselves per se, but so that no connection is made between AFL manipulation of games and the performance of umpires. I accept that no umpire is perfect and it's a tough job, but there can be no explanation for some decisions or non decisions in games except intentional manipulation of results.( To the detriment of teams like Melbourne)

I still think each team should be able to nominate three umpires they don’t wont to officiate at their games.

Nicholls would be my #1

Parnell #2

& open for other input for #3.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session. BLWNBA'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I arrived at around 1015 and the squad was already out on the track. The rehab group consisted of XL, McAdam, Melksham, Spargo and Sestan. Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
