Our 2017 and 2018 record is 10 wins and 13 losses at the G.

Away from the G we are 14 wins and 5 losses in the last 2 seasons. 

Our 2016 record at the G was 7 wins and 5 losses.

 

Because we lack leg-speed and polish.

We get found out at the G because we have to run back further and wider harder.  We get cut to ribbons when opposition push into space and take oodles of uncontested marks.  Swans moved it up the Southern side wing over and over by short passes to unmanned players.  We didnt even make a basic contest of most of them.  This included leaving players unmarked at the top of the 50 m arc for 10+ seconds, who can receive an easy uncontested mark and goal.

I think it is our structure, the way we run our zone, and the fact that we drop off doing the core thing (making contests) that wins us games.  On smaller grounds, we seem to cover back and across reasonable well.  We often give up the first or second possie so we can cover off the 80-40m kick.  However, we were woefully outrun across the width of the MCG ALL DAY, and had such poor footskills that we were caught out on our offensive plays as we ran off players - only to give them the ball and space to attack with.

Our defensive system failed yesterday from half forward all the way up the park.  Our disposal skills made things worse.

Because we are a very ordinary football team 

We don't spread wide enough to defend. We seem to be happy to let teams play really wide coming out from defense and then when we finally twig that we need to man up, the opposition then switches it which then shows up our lack of speed in trying to cover this again. Has happened all year, you would think the coaching staff would do something about this but they don't seem to care. At least we apparently learn lots of things each week. 

Look at the teams who play it well.

Richmond, Collingwood, Hawthorn they all move the ball quickly with accurate kicking and outside spread , they have multiple options when they get the ball and can move it in via the corridor or switch to the opposide of the ground when needed . They also have players who are skillful and good decision makers.something we lack.

Our game is rush it forward as quickly as possible

We were spread out beyond breaking point on the wide ground. Our best attack is spreading opposition teams on the run from defence to attack. If we are denied this opportunity, were lose poise and momentum and have to score through chance and individual brilliance of our forwards.

What still irritates me is that, although we were out thought and out played, we still had more inside 50s and more scoring shots and, but for a disfunctioning goal radar, could have, and probably should have, won as we lost by only 9 points.

Our style of play is an enigma to me. I hope that there is a long term plan as I do not expect success until at least 2020 as the team gains experience with itself.

The biggest issue I see is our zone. We allow space for teams to either cut us up or play keeping off. 

Is our training ground the same size as the mcg?

speed run and skills, Wts11  and HARD work...

To quote the TAC..."Speed Kills". We need to learn to run and spread.

Totally agree. They play like school kids hunting the ball to get a kick. No defensive bone in their body.

someone misses the ball and they turn around to see 4 opposition players laughing their heads off as they pick up the crumbs on their own and 3 hand balls later ...... GOAL.

Thats the main reason I was more confident of beating the Eagles this week in Perth than either Sydney or GWS at the G'.

We have been very good interstate.

Because they don't like us supporters.

The feeling is mutually Barney. 

We have not played it well for 90% of the last half century and it is easy to see why not good enough.

We can. This kind of thinking that 'we can't play at the G' tends toward the superstitious. No offence intended. I'm a little superstitious myself, just not about our losses at the G.

Bartell highlighted some of our lazy man marking on access all areas, said Clarko and others have toned down the zone to be more accountable one on one, and we're using our zone defence as an excuse to be lazy and not hold players to account
