What is the point of it all? I don’t know to be honest. We rock up to the G for yet another big test and flounder. And you never seem to get used to it either. But quitting isn’t an option. Even if I wanted to.

One day it will turn  watch out 2019      I Hope. Have not given up on finals this year.    I am turning 60   members over over 30 years.  always will be in some form.   May stop going to a  lot of games but will always be a member.  I have to be part of it       I do not know  why given the disappointments.  but most on here who have passion will always care.       As Goody says its a journey  (LOL)  See you all the G Sunday week !!!!!!

Each AFL kid grows up for the first 18yrs of life taking in the stories of AFL footy through media, if that's their interest.

Subconsciously they are aware of clubs struggles and triumphs.its well known the story of Melbourne being fragile under real heat/pressure.

 

Once at Melbourne the players learn and grow together, but once in a position of playing for the big prizes, those early dominant memories surface with the pressure of the coming finals... whether negative ones, or positive ones, depending on which club it is.

 

This effects the mental framework within the individual and collectively the team and the crowd.  (ie:  mental anticipation/expectation).  These revert back to memories, in the search for ammunition to fire in the big games.

Most of our memories are negative ones, as we tend to be down the bottom, much more often, than near the top.  These negative images create fear in the minds of all, and its so difficult to think thru fear.   To be rational enough under pressure to come out clean and winning.

 

Add the conservatism bred into our DNA, and so we are too comfortable with loss (used to it) and with being fearful (under the surface) than we oughta be.  >>>  (over time, leads to defeatism. acceptance). "oh well, better luck next week".

 

The more aggressive clubs handle they're fears much better, they will come our fighting, pumped up and intimidating. Taking it right on.

 

We have to aim to be aggressive once again, that fire and brimstone spirit which 'Checker' brought to the club,,,,, that was snuffed out by those conservatives who got rid of Norm Smith,,,   and we lost Barassi when at his fiercest.

 

We have far too many fire-fighters around our support networks.

 

 

... Conservativeness/FEAR,  is Our curse.

The point? Your club, if they make said finals, are a 1/8 chance of winning the GF.

I have been angrier during and after games this year than I have for a long time. Obviously my expectations of the team are higher, but they still manage to disappoint often enough that I have broken 2 mobile phones this season and probably taken a year or two off my dog's life. He hides under the office desk during games.

 

definitely have not had to endure the pain for as long as others in this thread however i totally understand the pain of being an MFC supporter. After a bad loss i promise myself to never watch another Melbourne game again, never go to the G again, never talk about footy again, never play footy again and throw away anything that distinguishes me as a Melbourne supporter. but after 24 hours of mourning and going through the seven stages of grieving, i realise that i am still proud to be a Melbourne fan, and i will watch the game next week with just as much enthusiasm and hope. that is what being a Melbourne fan is all about, you get pushed down put you just have to keep picking yourself up. believe me i have been very cynical before regarding MFC, i even once consider changing clubs but i just couldn't because i love this club too much, even if they give me an elevated heart rate every week. MFC forever!!!!!!!!!!

I think we will still make the top 8.  That's not the point tho.

 

Our issues on-field, playing, are still there to be sorted out.

The only way is forward, and to make changes to improve.

We're all in it together. Some hurt more than others. I gave up hope for a premiership when we lost lever (i dont think our backline is good enough without him). I gave up hope for the season and finals after the st kilda loss, yet for some reason the cats loss still stung badly.

The way i see it, we're out of the finals race. I told my friends to put money on the dees to miss the 8 at those juicy odds. They were amazed when we were sitting at 4th position but they are not suffering demons supporters. Disappointment isnt in their dna. If we happen to beat the eagles or the giants, i will take it as a bonus.

Due to work and family, i dont attend too many games and sadly the ones i've gone to with my kids were all horrible losses: hawks, tigers, pies and now swans. Young daughter would ask why we always leave early so i promised to stay to the end yesterday. My daughter tells me 'daddy our team is useless'. She doesnt understand the pain and i let her sing and dance to the swans song at the end.

You obviously missed out on watching the Dees play in the 90’s.

We have a young core of players who are playing well. With some more games experience they are only going to get better. 

The thing we lack at the Dees and have since Neitz is leadership!

Viney has been injured. So we haven’t been able to get consistent leadership from him on the field. Somebody else really needs to stand up in the playing group. There is no evidence of leadership or direction on the field. Sorry Jonesy!

Brayshaw and Oliver play hard all day! Is there leadership in these two.

Maybe it’s an Andrew Gaff when he comes over! 

I would say TMac, Gawn and Clarrie are the stand outs. I would make TMac captain next season if Viney- can't get his foot right.

The greatest problem in any continuously failing organisation is a lack of candour.

In other words, when somebody keeps making mistakes ,nobody mentions it.

Mistakes need to be HIGHLIGHTED until rectified.

If they can't be rectified they must go.

Honestly, I don't think many are going to appreciate this post at all, but I need to vent my frustrations somewhere, and as long time reader of the forum thought it was bout time I joined in!

 

I really think I have had enough from this club. 18 years of support, which I realise pales in comparison to the years of garbage some of you have had to put with, but nevertheless, it has been 18 years of sadness, anger, being mocked at school, but most crucially disappointing, gut-wrenching losses such as today.  I thought about listing off a history of the shocking, demoralising losses I have either personally witnessed or simply just remembered as particularly painful, but it really boils down to the fact pouring my heart and soul into this club is no longer worth it. Attending on regular basis with my father from 2007 to 2014 then after that on my own. This year I have attended every game in Victoria bar 2, and I easily think this has been the most torturous year, all the years of drubbings don't compare to the heartache I have gone through (so far) in 2018.

I just don't see how it's worth it anymore, the cycle of false hope followed by awful loss that brings all the false hopes back to earth. It's terrible. I'm frustrated towards my mum and sister and it's not fair, but I don't know how to get out of this abusive relationship. It's clear from the mental toughness of the current crop the players will not lead us to the promised land, and maybe if we do have the list to lead us to a flag, we can't seem to get the best 22 on the park at any one time. I at wits end and really wish I could see the future, to know whether this cycle of pain will lead to a flag, or even finals success. ANYTHING.

I need assistance on how to get through this because even though I've promised to not watch our final 2 matches, I don't what 2019 will bring.

Again I'm incredibly sorry for the rant, needed to finally write my feelings down somewhere.

What’s the point?? Haha, that’s exactly the same question I was asking myself as it was unfolding at the G yesterday. The thing that gives me the brazen bits is the results could be different if the players showed a bit of intestinal fortitude. That includes putting a stop to other teams momentum and not letting 5-6-7 goals in a row scored against us. But most importantly STAND UP AND KICK THE GOALS WHEN YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU TOO. It’s all mental goal kicking you’ve gotta want the moment and WE DONT  it’s embarrassing. I always walk away from the games thinking it just doesn’t mean enough to these players. They walk off collect their massive pay cheque and move on. They have no idea the suffering we have put up with. For me it’s 30 years. My son now carries the burden. What’s the point? I really don’t know, I just know I can’t show my son I’m a quitter, what sort of example would that be? I will come back for more pain like the rest of us, and live in hope!!

Simple maybe, but feeble .... Hell no.
No other club supporters have put up with more putrid garbage than us.
