So just finally watched the first quarter, I have to say I’m a little surprised at what I saw. We were good but (and I hate saying this) GC just looked absolutely woeful, particularly when were were going forward. They had zero defensive pressure in the middle and in their defence which really allowed us to do as we please.

We could’ve scored another two or three goals but actually missed some getable chances.

They were an absolute rabble.

But interestingly I thought their first 10 minutes was much better pressure than us. At the end 10 minute mark I couldn’t work out how we’d managed to get a 51 point margin at quarter time. They need to take the Roos approach to what he did with us, build from the back. Force other teams to work their asses off to score. Roos’s first year you could see what he was doing building a solid defensive mindset before releasing the shackles with Goodwin.

Anyway back to us, I think the players coasted this game at times. Which is fine especially as we still got the percentage booster we were after. Now there has to be a strong focus on bringing finals like pressure for Sydney.

Finals start this weekend.

Pretty much spot on with that analysis. Not to mention they had the ball handling skills of a goldfish.

It was the weirdest thing I've seen for a while. Normally when players do that it is because they are frustrated and kick it hard.  Jones just seemed to think he was in his backyard having a kick with the kids. Odd.

I thought he was frustrated cause he couldn’t get the ball before it went over the boundary which is why he kicked it.

Some on SEN today likening this image to the iconic photo of Ronald Dale kicking a goal back in the 50’s.

Just finished watching the replay...

Can’t remember the last time Tyson kicked the ball so efficiently! He looked in total control of his game on Sunday. Rapt for him.

Sydney are rubbish.  If we can't beat them then we don't deserve to play finals.

My only issue with today was our kicking inside 50.  It's still poor.

It seems to be at its worst when we dominate possession and it is in our own half for so long that we over commit. So I think it will be better when we play better teams tbh...

Sydney will be brave, I think they will soak up pressure, allow us to clog ourselves and our forward line and look to punish us with Buddy playing a 1-1 battle on the wing as a release and then kick into a very sparse forward line with their smalls.

We need to be disciplined and not over commit, but really, our first entry into the forward line needs to hit a target half the time...

How sad for Smith. He was looking bloody good.

I loved the effort of all the players.

To quibble: Jay Kennedy Harris is a worry. As is, I'm afraid to say it, Vince.

Best game I've seen Tyson play. I didn't see one turnover. Hopefully he's turned the corner and getting his mojo back.

I love Frost but I get delirium tremens when he kicks or hand passes. Still, there is tremendous upside.

Great to see Vandenberg again: he's an important player.

T. Mc had one of those days but he was still a very nady and important player.

We should beat the Swans.

Just watching the 2nd qtr and 2 mins in Tysone turns it straight over !

That's ma boy! I think you'll find it was a rare example of a rare day out for him...Most of his kicks and hand balls found a target. Give the boy some latitude, pleeeassse....

Thought he used it pretty well for the most part.

He has used the ball very well the last few weeks.  I cant remember him getting caught holding the ball either... or hand balling to a flat footed teammate.

Perhaps something has clicked for him.  He couldn't have timed his form reversal any better with Viney going down.

I thought the same when Clarrie took that kick.

I think SEN may be referring to this photo of the Great Man.

Camera at different angle but very similar action.

Clarrie is a delight to watch as I'm sure RDB was.

im starting to think Clarry could be like our Judd/Voss/Fyfe/Dusty etc - like how good could this kid become...when you watch him generally every thing he does or contest he goes too comes out in our favour. I would already have him in the top 5 mids in the league for sure

Frosty on Buddy a good test. I think he is more than adequate  to take Buddy on as he is a big bodied person who can run like the wind.

Starting to string a few games together and a big scalp is looming this week.

When was TMac in the back line? If it was during his ruck stint in the second half, it doesn't count.

A fair chunk of the last qtr..

It's OK. I was wrong once too. It was about 10yrs ago on a Wednesday afternoon and it was raining....

Meh. Still pretty happy that he's a forward now and don't reckon short stints in very specific game situations count, but acknowledge I made a very black and white statement that was bound to turn out wrong.

Go Dees.

Stick to red and blue ones in the future -- they suit you much better! ?

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
