Go and read about Jason Mcartney who thought missing a GF through suspension was tragic.

He realised in Bali what tragedy really was

Tragedy ain't a competition. We can only go on our own experiences. We pay could money and watch footy as an escape. To be part of something bigger. It is exhausting and not easy to just dismiss when it has been part of your whole life. Nothing pains me more than having to switch off just to ensure I don't ruin my weekend. A bad meal can be made up with a nice drink and cigar, or a dessert. But Melbourne losing makes it a write off when you actually commit 3 hours of your time off to support them.

You honestly wonder if it is worth it sometimes. Another chapter written last night in "Melbourne's Great Losses".

Maybe I invest too much, but my Saturday night was [censored], and my Sunday isn't looking much better.

yep. i'm not ashamed to say that i had a bit of a meltdown when tuohy took that mark and started to well up. once he kicked it and the cats were carrying on like porkchops it was like we'd just lost a grand final (sad in itself..i can't imagine how bad that would hurt). [censored] cried like a baby for about a minute. i rode that game so hard. heartbroken they lost. but it is just a game. and i'll be a dee for life. i really hope the players felt as bad as the supporters, but also that they know we are behind them (by & large) and only want good things for the team. go dees

Why was Gawn on the bench for the start of the last for a while? Absolutely astonishing by Goodwin and once again tactically bamboozled, he’s the easiest coach to coach against by a long way in my view. Oh and leaders, Jones our captain, once again missing when needed and didn’t direct players into a winning position when it counted. Time after time. The sooner we move on from Jones and his era the better, Goodwin needs a big pre season himself or it’s lights out for him next year. That was a soft underbelly horrible choke.

Gutted.. just absolutely gutted..

I'm proud of the boys effort and intensity, we fought right till the end and just unfortunately didn't pull it off.

I'm emotionally drained from supporting this footy club, but i know i will be back on supporting the boys loudly next weekend.

Sad to say we will only win 1 more game, the season is finished, If we can't beat Adelaide or west coast away we can't make it. Next year will be even harder to make the 8, the crows will improve next year, GWS will improve, essdrug will improve next year, north will improve, I don't care anymore, this team will fall apart next year, I don't want to believe it but next year we will lose 2000 members. The club is in a worse position then in 2011. If we miss the finals and gawn wins the brownlow I will spew, because gawn is the reason we miss out on finals, I knew round 1 was going to bite us on the ass.

I'm angry but this is insane lol Our 2018 would beat the 2011 team by 200 points.

Reality is, if we had a single competent tall defender on our list we'd have played finals last year and be finishing top 2 this year. And that's even accounting for the general softness of the club under pressure. But we don't and without our high draft pick we probably have little ability to bring one in.

I can't believe I'm saying this but I somehow even miss Frawley now. He seemed to put in about 50% of the time but at least he was capable of beating an opponent at times.

Yes that is right, but that is not the point, at the moment  the team is at the same point we were in 2011, I don't like to use culture but it is the  psyche of the club, every time  the club is going forwards it finds  away of crumbling.

This. Even though frost is only half good, i was hoping to hell goodwin would play him on tomahawk tonight but i knew he wouldnt and look what happens. Omac is too man concious and too reactive when the pressure in on. Frost attacked the contests and focused in the ball.

Our 2018 team is putting together one of the most dominant midfield performances I can remember. We are constantly generating >55 inside 50's and limiting them the other way. Yet we are still finding ways not to win.

Different list to 2011 but relatively similar result. The thing that $hitted me most about the crap teams from early in this decade was that it never had to be as bad as it was. A bit of pride in the jumper and the results could have been much better. The thing that $hits me about this years team is that the results could be so much better. A bit more pride in the jumper when things get tough and we could have been onto something. Might have even made the finals.

11 - 2017 loss to Pies in last round and miss from finals by 0.5%

12- 2015 loss to saints by 2 points.  Demons go ahead with 20 seconds to play.  Do not pack the backline.  Saints get centre clearance and Montagna kicks goal with 2 seconds left. Ffs

13  - 2016 v Cats. 111 Point loss in round 22 to farewell paul Roos.  Great way to say thanks.

Feel worse this morning somehow.

Our new low this year can be missing finals whilst being the highest scoring team of the year.

So sick of this [censored]

I am gutted by this loss. One of the worst I have seen. The reaction to it from the side will be almost interesting. I fear they could fall in a heap against Adelaide.

I imagine the match will be similar, I think we match up well with Geelong and Adelaide, the problem with both is their key forwards.

If we don't capitalise we will again find ourselves in a tough situation in a hostile environment. Lose next week and the season is done.

Agree but a lot of next weeks game will be in the heads of Melbourne players. Our midfield can beat theirs, but mentally ?

We can beat their midfield.  It doesn't bat very deep outside of Sloane and M. Crouch.

Their midfield got on top in the last but it's choc full of experience - Selwood, Dangerflop, GAJ, Duncan etc.  One of the most experienced in the competition and they just willed themselves back into the contest on the back of it.  The Crows don't have all of that and we can more than match them.

The old Melbourne would drop their bundle and possibly lose every game for the rest of the season. The last 5 games will tell us whether anything has changed or not.

Going to switch off for week, no SEN radio, no footy tv shows, no nothing, not listening

I've been doing that for a couple of months now.  TV on at first bounce, TV off when final siren sounds (or at an earlier time of my choosing when I deem us shite enough).  Great way to balance the passion and reality.  Everything is BS.  All that matters is the win.

We have one of the worst defences in the league ....and everyone knows it DD.  We are also never able to ice a quarter or end of a match out in a close game.  Continue to turnover the ball even when in possession with minutes to go.  Possibly something to do with the too many having ordinary disposal skills by foot and hence not willing to take the risk / fallout of missing a short / medium target.  So instead they go long, like Tracc last night.

As i have said from about middle of the season, Goody & Co need to focus a large portion of training on execution skills with particular emphasis on hitting short / medium targets by foot (if we aren't already doing so).  I haven't been to a training session this year but i wonder if we are targeting this aspect of skills other than a small session mixed in amongst everything else.  The Hawks focus on this for a minimum of 20 minutes three times a week apparently and everyone's involved.

If Rocky Balboa can cry so can you Rocky.

Mate I didn't cry just went outside to try to find the nearest stray cat to give it what for right up the Jacksy!

But didn't find any solace whatsoever!

Dare I say it it almost reminded me of the "Horror" of the Preliminary final in 87 vs Hawks, Still trying to forget that one same old story well ahead at 3/4 time have numerous chances to bury them... and blew it to the Shizen. Same as last night.

Gee this club really hurts so bad.

Another shizen week coming up coz ya just feel so bloody deflated!

I agree with Dazzle on another thread.

But boy it is psychologically draining supporting this club!

    TRAINING: Wednesday 19th February 2025

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
