I also think we are the last team since the Swans to have won on that ground (in 2015).

Great win.

Gawny's break out game - killed them in the second half.

It also wrecked the Cory Enright 300 game celebration which was a nice bonus

Underdogs, love it...

Yeh our loss to PA had nothing to do with our inability as a team to convert our chances. We dominated that game but were totally clumsy going into our 50. You can blame it on 2 or 3 or even 6 bad umpiring decisions. The fact remains  we lost that game due to inefficiency.

I was actually at the game so i had a very good look at things. Yes we had 30 more inside 50's our entries we deplorable but the umpiring alone was rank.

Go and watch the game again and you'll see what im banging on about.

That may be so but they are unquestionably a better side at their home ground.

Not sure about 5-6 golas better (that's alot) but their record is phenomenal down there and a huge leg up for them in terms of making finals.  It should be noted that their record is helped by the fact that in recent times often play lower ranked teams there.

Still this all time record is imposing (i love the games total -an omen?):

                     P      W      D      L         GF-BF           For          GA-BA           Agn         %           Win%
Geelong    666    443    5    218    9222.8790    64122    7600.7550    53150    120.64    66.89

In the last few years their win % is even more impressive. They have won 21 of the last 24 games they have played at their home ground.

Interestingly Swans have won all 3 of those games which i think augurs well for us as i suspect a big factor is the tight ground suits the swans highly contested game and therefore also suits us. And there is n doubt now that we do better on narrower grounds so that is also in our favour.

This is the weakest Geelong outfit I can recall in recent times. If we bring out A game it is better than theirs. I hope we are watching tapes of how the Swans go about it at Kardinia, they have a brilliant track record there.

I agree the umpiring was poor as it has been on numerous occasions. I also believe Hogan was poor but we don’t blame him for losing. He kicks 2 second half goals and maybe we win. Random hey

It'll be a notable victory if we can win.

I'd be extremely confident of the win if they were playing.  I think we can still win but things will need to go right.

Be assured that it (life) is not narrow. Identifying error assists in the interpretation but moreso the amelioration of the game so that we  may all face an even playing environment wherein anomolies and repetitive inconsistencies are reduced for the benefit of the general public and the game itself. From that groundswell - already identified on this wonderful DL site - opinion and its description may also flourish under those benchmarks that we are pleased to apply as filters to our tools of interpretation, and ultimately our satisfaction with the spectacle. Each contributor is free to comment and contribute - within the bounds of good intent - their own ideas and to meet at the philosophical level on common grounds expressed in a myriad of ways for the mutual pursuits inherent in being a football supporter. As you dictate, you may find yourself accepting mediocrity within some 'big picture' focus which itself is a narrowed pathway and in turn, reap reduced involvement, compulsion in perspective and an increase in those observable deficiencies that stain the very environment in which the game is often marred or its elements and goodwill are reducible. Henceforth, enjoy your football but please do not take too many liberties with the enjoyment, perplexity and scrutiny of others in this great game.

Beautifully articulated, now can you explain it all to me?

Again, this may be true but you rubbished the idea they were a 5-6 goal side at home. Not sure why.

But i agree we have a shot.

Interesting to see Tyson being selected again, another "revolving door" player. It is a pity he didn't end up in the same class as Caddy. By memory they were no.1 and no. 2  draft picks respectively for GWS. What is the point of keeping a player who is a champion reserves player?

I rubbished it because I believe this years Geelong is a completely different beast than previous (more dominant) seasons. I think their current standing on the ladder and their unconvincing performances at home this season back that up. They were only 2 goals up at 3/4 time against Carlton down there this year, which is an indictment given the state of Carlton.

The media has bashed us for a while now. The labels of "flat track" and not beating a top team have been used. Goody could have plenty of motivational stuff to get them going hard. I hope he has set the team up to hurt the cats and show them the way down the ladder.

Time for us to stand up, I would be disappointed if we don't roll them or at least give it all from the first bounce.

You mean like 'win this game (rd 23) and we'll be in finals'. Dream on, he doesn't do motivational.

He likes a narrative you know. And process.

And BTW the media are right. We haven't beaten one team in the current eight. A bit like Port last year...

Caddy was a top 10 pick for GC in 2010.

For a former pick 3 of the 2011 draft, Tyson has seriously been underwhelming of late. He seems to be going backwards by the year for a bloke that was touted to be a star of the comp in his early days of GWS and then Melbourne in 2014.

Perhaps yet another change of club might reinvigorate him?

Hopefully tomorrow night is a turning point for him and the opportunity certainly presents given Viney will be out for weeks.

To fill an injury hole,  rest a  similar position player who needs a rest, or stop team members from slacking off.

You must find it extraordinary that this terrific and well-balanced side has won one game less than us and count losses against Footscray, Essendon, and North, who are all out of the eight.

Boy oh boy wowee !!  How could it be !?

Did not say they were a terrific side only that their balance for this game looked much better than ours. They have more precise foot skills and our team looks very slow.

As usual, you read something and put your own slant on it.

But good to see that you are true to form.

Not spoiling for a fight but the fact they are not as strong as they have been in the past few years does nothing to argue against the point they are a 5-6 goal better side at home than away.

In fact the quote above strengthens the contention they are better at home. Despite being poor they have only lost there once this season (and were leading by 4 goals at 3 q time in that game)

We maybe in a better position this year than previous years to win kardinia park  because they have dropped off and we have got better but that is a completely different argument/discussion.

Again there is no question they are a better side at home and are therefore more likely to win games there than away from home. Which is why, despite being below us on the ladder and us being in better form, they are  overwhelming favourites with the bookies at $1.58 to win the game.

Last year we were a less mature team and didn't deserve to be in finals after the North loss and the Collingwood one. This year we are stronger.

Are you sure none of the coaching staff would fire a few of them up with what the media say? The ego of these young men can be manipulated in order to drive them to be better players.

The fact remains, "we have not beaten one team in the current eight ", this I don't dispute. I do dispute the relevance of the statement.

At the start of the season the narrative of the many is, it is an even competition. I believe this and any team can beat another on any given day. Alot comes down to the mystery of sport. It is why I watch. To suggest bottom 10 is useless buys into the myth of best. Often the psychological effect of being a winning team or losing/winning close games or smashing or being smashed,  has its effect. This I believe is what determines top teams, not necessarily there skills. It is in their heads except for a few champions/elites.

We also haven't played many of the "top teams". Playing these stronger teams gives us a learning curves and can drive us to be better next time.

Port still made finals, though.

Still, I get your point.  We need a few scalps and we'll need to take them to book a place in the finals.

I don't agree that we're overly slow.  I know it's a popular assessment.  We lack outside class and perhaps one express runner, but we're not as slow as is made out.

Oliver, Brayshaw and Petracca are above average in the pace department for big bodied mids.

Frost and Smith are above average, while Salem and Jetta are fine.

Melksham and Harmes are above average, as are Garlett and Spargo.  Fritsch is also fine, as is Jones.

We know the small handfull who lack pace.  If you're winning the contest and spreading it's amazing how quick you can look.

Who's Geelong's outside star that regularly cuts up the opposition ?  Like us, they don't have one.

As for balance ?  We've got the best ruck of the two teams.  We have two dangerous key forwards to their one.  We're playing two tall defenders, plus the 191cm Smith, which looks fine to me.  It's not our best personnel, but we're talking 'balance' here.

We have two small quick crumbers up forward.  We've got 'one on one' midsize strength with Melksham and perhaps Petracca or Fritsch.

Where is their superior 'balance' you speak of ?  Btw, they have 8 players under 50 games to our 4.

As for their "precise footskills' ?  This is a furphy.  The reason Adelaide beat them last week is because they butchered the ball by foot out of their defence.

We may lose this game (I think we'll win), but it won't be because we're slow or they have better balance.

Caddy was an in & out player at 2 clubs before he found his mojo last year at Richmond...maybe this is the game for Tyson to turn it around.

Couldn't come at a better time if it is...

To be honest I totally misread the initial comment. I thought he was saying a 5-10 goal better team then us down there, which I disagree with. Point taken ?

Melbourne sit 6th on kicking efficiency % and Geelong 10th.

I hope he's played inside, with gawn's advantage in the ruck i can see geelong setting up to limit oliver and brayshaw hitting contests with speed to allow the clear break away. Tyson will be important to fire out quick hands and free oliver up to still try the more attacking role he's been playing the last couple of weeks.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front.  They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
