There are tackles and tackles.  It would be interesting to ask someone like Misso about the relative impact of the different sorts of games.  I know I was told that game like Casey's on Saturday are one's where you don't tend to get injuries.

They are defined by the stats people the same way but clearly when a pack forms and players aren't running full pace rather diving on a relatively stationary target then you would expect less injuries....

Yes, he was fined for something he did to Lachie Neale, not Michael Walters.  Same for Jones.  Neale must have done something to get under their skin during the game.

Melbourne veteran Jordan Lewis was also fined, but is free to play this weekend, after his stray elbow on Fremantle speedster Michael Walters cost his side a 50m penalty.

It is the 17th time Lewis has been found guilty of an incident across his 297-game career, with the 32-year-old asked to part with $2000 for the striking charge.

Melbourne co-captain Nathan Jones was fined $2000 and forward Jesse Hogan $1500 after both were charged with misconduct for strikes on Fremantle midfielder Lachie Neale.

I don’t think we need to bring in more pace for the sake of it. Last week’s team looked much more balanced. I’d make 2 changes:

In: Vince, JKH

Out: Smith, Spargo

I think both the outs will be good players in time but JKH is in good VFL form and I think will give a little more than Spargo right now. Similarly, I’d trust Vince a little more than Smith at this stage. We look more stable (and quicker) with Frost back in defence than we did a month ago.

ANB will be looking over his shoulder at VDB if he maintains some form at Casey.

Clearly not.

Surely avb would have to play more than 3 vfl games before a call up after so long off? It is worth noting that he only played 3 qs on sat.

Yep but logic goes out the door a bit when you lose.

If we were to beat Geelong, then yes, we wouldn't need to rush him in.

But given it's at their stadium and three umpires will only hear one noise, I think it would be one of our finest efforts to win down there - Richmond couldn't do it down there last season if you recall.

I’d love to see JKH get some reward for effort, but who to drop is harder.

I love Spargo, but I feel JKH might get more if it and do more damage.

Also might be less fumbly than ANB has been of late.

If J. Smith goes out , Pederson could be valuable as a swingman , or do we have a look at Keilty or Baker?

I'd love Keilty to get a run DZ

I stand corrected.  The Herald Sun live update said he was charged with misconduct against Lachie Neale, not Walters.  They must have got that one mixed up with Hogan.

On N B His misses ( and he misses a lot are under 12 stuff) Will cost a game at some stage if not more! Cannot miss easy shots from 25!

Neal Bullen is a shocking set shot in front of goal. If last nights dreadful inaccuracy costs us again many on this site will be Livid!

So is Trac. Neal Bullen is going at 18.12 for the season.

Trac is at 10.12, so not only is he less accurate, he has also had a lot less shots on goal while playing a lot more time as a forward.

Neal Bullen is not in the side for his silky smooth skills. He is a workhorse and is in the side to cover ground.

Ill go further and say

JKH , VINCE and possibly Oscar Baker for

Smith Spargo and possibly ANB

VDB not that far away and has physical presence! Could be a "Wildcard"

If JKH plays then must be last chance I think!

Funny how last year Trac was praised for his accurate kicking, that'll come back to him soon I'm sure. Not so sure on ANB, still he is vital to the team, if he went out they'd bring in Bugg to play his role and he's worse in front of goal.

ANB has to play this week and I think needs to tag JJ, he's the doggies most vital player but can be shut down and ANB has not only the fitness to run with him all game but also demands some respect in that he's getting a lot of shots on goal - he's kicked multiple goals in 4 games so far but could have on at least 3 other occasions.

Not that it was a wonderful performance on Saturday but feeling a bit better about MFC this week. It was a solid win. Bringing Frost into the back half has added a bit more of both height and pace. Spargo and Jeff, and Oliver, adds a bit more pace/ nip in the forward half. My view is that if we can get Hunt  fit and inform that would add a little more and give us the best chance to complete with the top teams.

I know making the 8 is the principal aim  but I’m not giving top 4 away just yet. All our rivals are copping injuries. We are in comparative good shape, and things like that count. But the big game will be Geelong at Geelong 2 weeks from now. We must take them.

Bringing the bacon home for Geelong at Geelong before the Geelong spectators breathing the heavy Geelong air against the MFC will be one of the key achievements of the White Brethren on the day, almost as important as an actual finals match held at the Geelong venue - worth millions to the AFL for Geelong to be in a finals-dominant position at the end of the home-and-away series.

I didnt watch the VFL game on the weekend, but would Bake be under serious consideration just to give us that extra speed and speed on the outside on the wider MCG?

Do we bring him for Smith or play Vince ehos hsd the week off and will be fresh?

Didn't do enough for mine DD but the conditions were atrocious.  NQR (ready) for the step up just yet IMHO.

What about JKH? In hot form in the VFL and would surely add a bit of pace and skill on the outside?

Just my view but has to remain inside 50 or thereabouts DD and probably his best work will be inside 30.

Resembles a quick thinking old school rover feeding off packs and getting into space for the opportunist snap or mark/set shot.

The outside run further up field might happen as he develops a bigger tank but i think if he returns and is played higher up the field to start with it would be wasted and he'd end up back at Casey in no time.

JKH was very good on the weekend.  Would be nice to see the Ins from last week get at least 3 weeks at it though, provided they don't have a mare along the way.

Having said that Spargo had 0 contested possessions and only 2 tackles inside 50 so you never know.  Spargo might have sailed very close to the wind but i don't think any of the 4 Ins were bad enough to see the FD hit the eject button yet IMO.

50+ point win also and first game back for over 10 weeks for some.  Need a few weeks to find their match fitness / pace & the intensity of AFL again (not Spargo i realise...but still a green rookie).

Are we talking about the elbow that was so bad he wasn't even cited for it by the match review panel?  Going by your punishments, Hogan should have been given the electric chair for his hit on Sam Rowe last year.

Lewis was by far my most disliked player in the competition when at Hawthorn

Sorry to say nothing has changed now he’s with us

Think he’s a huge negative for the club

Start punch ups and leave others to finish them

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
