Hi Team, just wondering if you could help me.
I am looking for Greatest Finals Moments in Demons History. More specifically some play that an individual Demon pulled off that is so memorable, that when I said the greatest finals moments it was the first thing that popped into your head. 

Thanks guys interested in what you guys think!

Those that I can remember since 1960.

1. Neil Crompton's goal in 1964. I was behind the goals.

2. Robbie kicking the first goal v NM in 1987. Who deserved it more? 

3. David Schwarz's last quarter against the lolly blues first week in 2000.

4. Alan Johnson's 11/10 game in 1988 v WC (memory?)

5. Keeping filth to 2.2 in 1960 GF.

I hope nobody mentions the 2002 semi final vs Adelaide. Yeah it was a great game from a neutral perspective, but we lost and shouldn't be thought of as highly as it is by Demon fans.

The 2000 prelim V's North was pretty damn good and doesn't seem to get talked about much. You'd take a 156-106 win with your gun small forward kicking 8 (and Powell kicked 4 with 33 touches) to put you into a granny.... any day of the week!

Qualifying final against Adelaide in 1998: I remember going with a Crows supporting mate and seeing us carve em up.

When Wiz have McLeod the slip 2 minutes in, you knew it was going to be one of those days. I remember some of our blokes sticking it up the Crows supporters at half time, telling them 'It's over fellas!' It was one of those rare times that I was comfortable in the belief that it was.

When the Crows rolled North, I was absolutely spewing.

2000 Qualifying Final vs Carlton: 

I was figuratively walking on air after this one.

I know you should never tie football to self esteem but that week, I felt bullet proof.

Comprehensively outplayed for three quarters but the fact that they couldn't put us away was their downfall. Having Kouta (at the peak of his powers) out as well didn't hurt.

In reality, this was the beginning of the end for Carlton as the next year was basically them treading water before the slide of 2002. They never have been considered a premiership threat since. If we are being honest with ourselves, they would have put up a much better fight in the big dance than we did. Not that they would have won but I couldn't see them getting physically bullied like we did which I reckon was one of the main reasons we got pantsed as badly as we did.

 

2004 Elimination final against Essendon. Whelan lays out Hird with a bump, dishes the ball off to big game player Travis Johnstone, who nails the goal from 50 out on the boundary. Shame we lost the match, but that few seconds was possibly my favourite few seconds of footy ever.

I was never proud of that moment, myself, even though it was James Turd on the end of it...

I know i am in the minority, that’s ok.

Very honest CBF and spot-on by my reckoning... almost the mirror image IMO, to 1987 Prelim.

If we got passed the Hawks,,,  we would have crushed the Blues that year. 

We through that game away, out at Waverley in '87.

 

The Hawks had the wood on us. through that Era;  so we became our own worst enemy, Re them.

The 1948 GF may rank as our greatest ever victory because we beat a rampant favourite Essendon in replay. There was a play in the first game involving Norm Smith that nearly got a goal which would have brought victory but was unsuccessful. In replay the following week we thumped Essendon to win the flag, I think this was Norm Smith's last game. From Red Fox, pp160-2: "By time on in the last quarter  the Demons had reduced the margin by just a point - the scores were Essendon 7.27.69 to Melbourne 8.9.57 - before a remarkable Demon fightback took the game into previously uncharted territory. The man who sparked the revival was Norm Smith, as Don Cordner recalled: Norm took a mark on the left half-forward flank about 35 yards out and he drop-kicked a goal - right through the middle. Drop-kick it. Mind you, he was a very accurate drop-kick, but thinking back, with the state of the games as it was and it being a Grand Final of all things, it appeared a gutsy decision to use that type of kick. Norm kicked only one goal in that game but it was one that really mattered.  Moments later, the Demons rushed the ball forward from the centre bounced and Spud Dullard marked at half- forward, seemingly outside scoring range. Spud didn't look for anyone, he just launcheed into this torpedo-punt - he couldn't have struck it any better in his dreams- and it sailed through for a goal, Cordner marvelled. Sud wasn't all that bright and to his dying day i don't think he realied what he actually did. He'd levelled the scroes. We didn't know how much time there was left, but we knew that the next score wins.Melbourne again won the ball and this time Norm Smith - who had been one of the best afield gifting Mueller at least three of his six goals - marked 50 odd metres out. Insted of wasting valuable time by going back for his kickn, and risking not covering the distance, Smith played on immediately and blazed away at goall, his kick drifting across the facce of gaol and out of bounds just afew metres from the behind posdt. Cordner has such a vivid memory of thee frantic final moments that, at 85 years of age, and almost 60 years after the event, he relived the experience as though it awas happening before his very eyes...

87 Elimination, simply because it had been 23 years. Closest I’ve ever seen to the perfect game of football. It was Todd Viney, (not R Flower) from memory, who kicked the first goal. (30 seconds in, snap from the Smoker’s Stand pocket.). With the benefit of hindsight, it was game over from that magic moment. Complete euphoric fairytale. Cannot think of a better moment when the whole MCG erupted.......  Best game of football ever! Will only be surpassed by the next winning Melbourne Grand Final.

2000 Qualifying final vs Carlton was an epic match. To watch the arzzz drop out of thousands of Carlton supporters was priceless. They were home for all money but when a young kid called Cameron Bruce was protected by the shepherd of a lifetime by David Schwarz and slotted the sealer from the forward pocket, I was more emotional than I'd ever been sitting at a football game.

1948 Grand Final quote, pt 2:  "The crowd noise is unbelievable. There can only be seconds left. I'm beside myself with excitement that we could actually pinch this! I'm about 50 yards away from where  the throw-in is going to take place, and the boundary umpire is still making his way to the ball. You're never tired in a situation like that, you get new legs. A I'm rushing over there, i make up my mind that i'll try to punch the ball through for a behind. no i won't just try, i can do this! i envision it happening. I'll jump on that bloke's back an go bang with my fist and we'll be premiers. But Norm Smith is standing there  thinking he has to contest the throw-in, and he's got other ideas. i can almost read Norm's mind - he wants to grab it out of the ruck and kick a goal. but it wasn't necessary - we just had to score. I'm screaming Leave it Norm! Leave it Norm !because i've got the run at it and i can his this thing through for a point. but norm gets in front of me. i can't blame him through he can't hear me because the crowd is going absolutely bananas. i can hardly even hear myself. norm gets his hands to the ball and i hit it at exactly the same moment and the ball spills to the ground and comes within a few feet of the goal line. Norm makes another attempt at the ball on the ground but slips and Cec Ruddell of Essendon grabs it and kicks it, and then the bell rings From being a screaming match , there is suddenly dead silence...

Melbourne went on to easily win the replay the following week:

Oh the Demons they were great

in the year '48

because we didn't just know how to lose

and it was thanks to Norm and Jack

that we won the flag back

and gave it to Checker Hughes.
