Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

It is crucial that we put in a request not to have(WA umpire) Dean Margetts when we play the Eagles in Perth.

Did anyone else notice how he seemed intent on bringing WCE back into the game when they were way behind against Essendon last Thursday?

Normally comments on umpires from me are not worth reading, since I’m so one-eyed Melbourne. I can’t stand Essendon, but I thought the umpiring in that game was disgracefully biased against them. I guess it’s not deliberate bias, but it’s a cowardly tendency  of some umpires to be influenced by the “ crowd affirmation”, which is worse there than anywhere else....even Geelong.

Margetts( why does that remind me of “maggots” )was the worst, and if he’s in charge again, I’m betting on the Eagles.

Totally sick of watching footy, different rules each week. Supporters are over it. Poor spectacle and they want to make more rule changes in October when they don’t even understand the current ones

I'm almost over the whole AFL scene SF.  I watched a little of the Norf / Dogs encounter.  At one point a Norf player was tackled,  went down on a knee while being tackled (broke that tackle...just), then tried another tackler on after running on a little more...disposed the ball incorrectly.... "play on" called.

From that direct piece of play the ball then ends up on Norf's 50 arc, bounces off ground into an oncoming Doggy defender's bread basket.  He gathers, gets immediately tackled... "holding the ball".

I turned the game off at that point and went over to world cup (possibly a replay).

Unwatchable.

I wonder if the same 3 umpires working together every week, like the officiating crews in the NFL do, would improve consistency and decision making.

Norf get the most unbelievable run from the maggots EVERY week. Ben Brown is the worst diver in the league but no media will ever mention it.

Agree with all of this. As an objective observer of the WCE/ESS game with equal parts completely rational hate for both, along with admiration for ESS's start, I could not believe the umpiring against ESS.

Fan petition needed.

1 person is an island. Might seem a bit twee, but a petition with say 50k-100k sigs calling for an umpiring overhaul would be something for the media to get stuck into Dill with. I suspect there would be sections of the media who would be delighted (except for biting the hand that feeds) but I might be wrong.

Starting a petition and spreading has never been easier.

We could also call for the summary execution of the Port Dees umpires for added entertainment value or else some forensic accounting of their betting accounts. Not at all suggestion anything amiss there, but it's good to be sure.

I think it works pretty well. Other than the Patriots getting the 50/50 calls go their way, the NFL is well officiated. Pass interference and defensive/offensive holding are probably the most subjective decisions, as most of the other fouls are either there or not (e.g. defensive offside, false start). It is like Rugby League in that the movement is not 360 degrees, plus all fouls except Defensive Pass Interference have set penalties, and the yard markers mean a 50 can't be 75 or 35 for example.

Surely for 50 metre penalties the umpire awarding the 50 could stand at the place of the infringement and the umpire in the next zone moves to the mark with the help of a laser marker generated from the first umpires' GPS tracker.

Anyone know if the club or anybody of substance has asked for clarification from the AFL umpiring officiondos on the Melksham one on one blocking free and resultant 50 meter penalty for a goal down the other end? Hmmm 12 point decision!

I don't know so I would hope someone could find out...and reasons for or against seeking clarification. It sounds ridiculous in some areas but none of these are as ridiculous as the levels of mysterious umpiring decisions and behaviours that we have seen so far this year.

It is interesting that we don’t hear more about some of these decisions, not to smash umpires but to understand the interpretation and at times to admit mistakes. There were at least 2 mystifying ruck frees against Max vs Grundy last week, but we still don’t know why; then we have the Melk blocking decision this week. I would have thought all forwards need to know they now can’t hold their ground in a marking contest, before there are more poor unfortunates who ignore a whistle, thinking they have the free and give away a 50.

The very reason that we are baffled by such newborn umpiring decisions. We, keen observers of the game over many years, watch and interpret all decisions yet consistency of application is never achieved by the white brethren. Where is the modern-day Nash or Beitzel? They always communicated with the public on decisions without apology or intent. We are totally baffled. The players must be freaking out over 'what to do' in 'decision-based circumstances' onfield. Baffled they are: just recall last week's game when someone '...didn't care that XXXXXX was bleeding...', '...why the free kick?'

I can't think of another game that has made so rage filled.  I was actually ready to go full run Swanson with TV.

The last quarter was an absolute  debacle  and port clearly got some highly dubious calls. The afl is entirely to blame for continually changing the rules every year.

I suggest everyone writes a letter or emails the afl to express our frustration  at having to suffer such pathetic farcical  one sided umpiring.

A petition.

Also someone could easily spin up a webform to bombard the AFL with the same pro forma email from diff people. Easy. I'd be happy to do it.

what would be useful would be an independent web site that put up videos of contentious decisions and invited discussion on them

there are just too many bad or missed decisions that don't get adequately discussed (unless someone like clarko, eddie, terrible twins whinges) publicly and the afl are just happy to let them slip through the cracks

the media are also very remiss (know which side their bread is buttered) in discussing/assessing umpiring in a comprehensive way despite the fact that it is one of the fans major interest focuses/frustrations. they should be able to openly assess it weekly without it becoming a witch hunt

the spotlight needs to be put on the rules and umpiring, the fans are getting increasingly disillusioned at the inability of the afl to apply (or even define) the rules of the game both fairly and in a manner that fans and players alike can understand

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
