exactly, and it was how we played the game back then. it was the norm, give or take.

Captain blood made his name doing such things, as a clean up exercise.   you hit ours, we hit yours.

You should ask about the O'Keefe's, down the beach way.   not averse to a scuffle or two.

The Wallace thing was Rodney's crudest.

It would be the making of him, with us.   It would be 'the final straw', of his interstate divorce.

bring it on.

not always.

Crudest... it was disgusting. I was 11 and thought Gringts was the best.

That incident changed my view, and I think anyone who can suggests Wallace comments make it ok to glorify that thuggery is terrible.

80 stitches, $15k later... In those days, I’d chase the compensation too.

No sssue with that..  it was crude.  But I will never put Rodney down for his efforts to try to get a longtime passive club to fire up, and learn to fight fire with fire, in a tough competition.

We were all sick and tired of being the beaten up boys.

Grinter is a great of afl, and Melbourne.

I'm sure if you learnt of many stories of 2nd world war time, you may be disgusted by these as well.  But sometimes it is, what it is,,, of the time;  something that was just done; that way.

It would not be tolerated today, and shouldn't be.

But I do not agree with the holier than thou PC, creeping into our game these days.

Makes no difference, it was putrid then and now, gloryfying it based on Wallace comments says a bit about those people.

Grinder wasn’t a great of the game, but he was a very good player for Melbourne.

I also strongly believe that he did not mean to belt Wallace as he did, but was going to belt the ball downfield, something he did on numerous occasions

No matter what Wallace said glorifying him having his jaw smashing into pieces is pathetic.

I have always been appalled by the incident no matter the time or how footy was played. It was thuggery.

The definition of AFL football in those days was just that: THUGGERY.

You want proof? Scott, Matthews, Wallis, The Dipper, Balme, etc etc etc

If you had the right mix, skill and thugs, you did well...

I'm just surprised that a so-called oracle/legend/victim would condone what can only be called spiteful violence. Maybe a brain cell or two have gone missing over the years?

More the other way round.

My name should tell you, I loved Rod, but I wouldn’t consider him a Demons great, let alone a great of the AFL!

He was a very good player for us, gave his all, but not a great.

No one is glorifying anything.  I think your reading too much into all this. thru 2018 lenses.

Wallace's comments are designed to aid us. not against us.  he's not barracking for the Crows.   He's a Melbourne supporter, or was.

People overreacting to media stuff, is really just getting sucked into all the spin.

People oughta think more often about the reverse psychology, instead of immediately jumping into fight/flight mode, over the club.

We want the crows to go lever, to go the man. We want that.

... let them try.    and really steel ourselves.

Rod was an excellent player, a great player.

Not one of the all time AFL greats.   Again reading too much into it. I didn't call him a legend.

I called him a great Melbourne player.  As  Stynes was, as Sean wight was, as Greg Healey was. as Yeater was.

Yes Rod was a great player.

He held his own in company of Peter Moore, Jimmy Jess, David Cloke, Rhys-Jones, what else do you want.  He wasn't Tony Lockett or Jonathon Brown.

You seem to be a bit off in your judgements.  Actually thinking less of Grinter, amongst these players of the day.

Perhaps people have different criteria for whom they judge as being a great of the game and club. Banging on about it isn’t going to change someone’s opinion.

I don’t consider Grinter to be a ‘great’ of the MFC but I do have some great memories of watching him as a youngster.

Grinter is the equal of all of them, in terms of effectiveness.

Only Lyon was slightly higher, in SOO games.  at least for a couple of seasons, anyway.  Neita not quite as good as Lyon. But played in a lesser quality team, compared to what the younger Lyon had.

Love or popularity, doesn't equate to great or not great, as a footballer.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
