Demons11 7,151 Posted May 22, 2018 Posted May 22, 2018 There was a story last week about Mahoney being groomed for the role. Quote

In his time at West Coast he quadrupled their membership. I like the idea of Mahoney being mentored for the role. Hopefully, if true, and he does takeover, he can continue the good work that PJ has been doing. Edited May 23, 2018 by Ethan Tremblay 1 Quote
Guest Posted May 23, 2018 Posted May 23, 2018 I think Mahoney is the ideal candidate. He has a very good reputation and has served us very well as FOM. If he's not given his chance at Melbourne he would be lost to us in very short time unfortunately. Quote
Guest Posted May 23, 2018 Posted May 23, 2018 The question is: is there a Stuart Fox in the wings (ala 2008)? It was clear he had done his time at Geelong under Cook and was ready to become a CEO in his own right. We of course hired Cameron Schwab but the point is who in club land fits that description? rjay 25,427 Posted May 23, 2018 Posted May 23, 2018 I think it will be a younger person from within... ...but for the sake of an argument would we entertain Simon Lethlean or Steven Trigg? 2 Quote

Agree a person from within: George De Crespigny, currently our Chief Commercial Officer and I reckon he was brought in to understudy Jackson - no info, just my guess. The AFL aren't going to let go its oversight of mfc to quickly and GDeC is an ex AFL person. Re Lethlean - doesn't pass the NDH test, altho Gil would be very keen to see his 'great mate' in a CEO job. Re Trigg - doubt he would leave SA again. He has just taken a role with Adelaide 36er's I really hope it is De Crespigny. He has been with PJ thru all the major asset, financial and sponsorship decisions. He is on the same page as the Board in club direction. He would have his own ideas on how to take the club further and could weave them into our strategy. For mine, it is not a time to 'rock the boat' with a new outside person who would want to make 'their mark' and start reinventing stuff. Given that the club has preached 'stability' on and off the filed since PJ and Roos arrived I would be very surprised if we went outside the club - with the proviso of no meddling from the AFL. I always had the feeling that GDeC was brought in as PJ's understudy. 1 Quote
Lucifers Hero 40,746 Posted May 23, 2018 Posted May 23, 2018 (edited) While we wouldn't want to lose Mahoney, it might be good for his career to work in a different role in the AFL world, be it at another club or in AFL House. Or even another sporting code. I mentioned in the earlier PJ thread that in my experience, to be really ready for a CEO role (in any type of organisation) the person needs a variety of experience in different parts of their industry and across disciplines (perhaps in the same or different industry). For mine, Mahoney does not yet have enough experience to move into a CEO role. I doubt missing out on our CEO role would be the catalyst for him to go. He doesn't seem the 'spit the dummy type'. But he may leave before too long to further his career. If/when he does, I would say: Great job, well done for the Demons and all the best for the future. Go with every Dees supporter's thanks and blessing. Edited May 23, 2018 by Lucifer's Hero 3 Quote

ignition. 1,478 Posted May 23, 2018 Posted May 23, 2018 I don't know enough, or any names, that could be raised as candidates. I only hope the club explores beyond its four walls to find the best person for the job. As for Mahoney, I've questioned his negotiation skills in the past (regarding trade week) and would prefer someone with more experience. However, if PJ believes he can meet and exceed his expectations then so be it. We've all seen first hand what a poor CEO can do. This decision will crucially impact the club's ability to succeed in the future. I just hope the person helps us become a sustainable powerhouse like we once were many many years ago. Quote

This is what I've been thinking, since Jackson was mooted as possibly leaving some time in the future, back in 2016/17. Jackson has been a big rap for Josh Mahoney; and josh has lasted many clean outs of our admins over the years, and comes out clean. He does a good job of things. I would not be surprised to see Josh take the role, which would mean we are looking for him to mentor a footy dept head. 1 Quote

This decision will crucially impact the club's ability to succeed in the future. I just hope the person helps us become a sustainable powerhouse like we once were many many years ago. Freakonomics podcast did a great series on CEOs a couple of months back. Both empirically and anecodotally in almost all cases it is better to recruit from within for a CEO. In a business sense, companies that do have stronger growth, shareholder confidence etc than those that recruit from outside. Those that recruit from outside tend to change the rest of the executive, and a whole heap of corporate knowledge, strategy and culture walks out of the door with them. Then people further down the organisation are left rudderless unless the change is managed well (always incredibly hard to do). The only attraction for recruiting from outside is if the organisation is a basketcase and the culture needs to be turned around. This was true pre-PJ but, at least from the outside, the opposite seems to be true. If Josh Mahoney or George de Crespigny are being groomed for the role and then we would be mad not to appoint them unless an absolute superstar candidate is available. Look at how the AFL has appointed it last few CEOs, by grooming through the head of football operations role, during the period where the league has expanded from a parochial Victorian league to the dominant sporting code in Australia: then compare that to NRL which recruits from outside and hasn't grown at anything like the rate of the AFL. 1 Quote

He is highly regarded in the AFL industry and if PJ believes he is the man from the job then I would have no worries at all about his selection. 1 Quote
DeeSpencer 26,692 Posted May 23, 2018 Posted May 23, 2018 If we promote Mahoney then we will need someone to take over the footy admin. If he's the best man for the job then so be it and footy is the core product so having a footy guy in charge makes sense, but they have to be ready to oversee the whole club and delegate the footy stuff. We've seen what goes wrong when a CEO overreaches in to football. If we promote this de crispy fellow then we better make sure our commercial staff are strong. The strength of the Roos-Goodwin handover was as much to do with having Mahoney, Jason Taylor, Toddles, Misson and Brendan McCartney in place. The new CEO is a big test for President Bartlett because he'll have to be more prominent. 1 Quote

Guest Posted May 23, 2018 Posted May 23, 2018 Movement on this front though this could be all speculation. Cricket boss firms as Demons replacement Nicho is technically an outside appointment but he should know the club and what issues it confronts. I would prefer that we got someone internally as there is less likely to be an unnecessary change of course but Nicho isn't without football experience obviously. Quote
DeeSpencer 26,692 Posted May 23, 2018 Posted May 23, 2018 I thought the cricketers were treated harshly but I was impressed by Nicho during the SA scandal. He forthright and spoke calmly early on in the piece when the drama was pretty fiery. By all reports a smart guy and cricket has been through a lot in his short time there. That he's even a candidate (as far as we know) is a good sign I think. Not sure in previous years we'd get someone in his position even interested. Quote
Rod Grinter Riot Squad 5,681 Posted May 23, 2018 Posted May 23, 2018 Would be very glad if Nicho got the job, my preference of any of the names put forward and would not be surprised if he gets the job. Quote
