Would love for us or another club to make a decent bid for the next Silvagni son this year. Force their hand so as to not get him cheaply

If the next Silvagni son is on a par with the current one heโ€™d be worth roughly pick 88 in the rookie draft. Absolute spud Jack Silvagni.

The definition of being on a list because of who his father was. Only in this instance, if I remember rightly, his father recruited him as well.

It was meant to be traded.

It's kind of the Clayton's second round pick. The priority given to the recipient clubs did not upset the other clubs with their various draft picks including for that matter the MFC.

Don't think that's right Jim. ย Gold Coast have selected a couple of state league players already I think.

As Saber and Cards said above, the deal with Geelong makes no sense at all, and is just plain stupid.

It makes sense to Geelong if they had to use a higher pick than 43 to draft Nathan Kreuger, a 19yo, tall swingman playing in the SANFL.ย  Highly likely Crows or Port had their sights on him with a higher pick.ย ย

To me this is against the spirit of the concessions:ย  for GCS and Carlton to top up with experienced players before other clubs can draft them.ย  GCS is doing just that.ย  Carlton is cashing in the players for picks.ย  The beneficiary in this case is Geelong who get a player on the cheap before anyone else gets a chance.

Wouldn't an intelligent list manager have started a bidding war for the concession pick, considering many clubs would've had their sights set on hidden gems? Create paranoia and play clubs against clubs, wait until someone blinks and offers overs.

Oh, nope. We'll just settle for some shitty pick in the 50s on day 1 from the first club that asks. Nevermind all that.ย ?

Every club had the chance to do the deal, Cats probably were front and center.

Carltonโ€™s list build has been woeful.ย

Disagree it's built around a spine and will take longer than ours. The main pieces are there and from 2020 they will be where we were last year

Kreuger is likely to be able to play too.ย  Geelong's recent record with this type is excellent - Tim Kelly and Stewart.

If Carlton use the pick on say Setterfield then it looks closer to the AFL intent.

With Setterfield nominating Carlton as his club of choice, what do people think about them potentially giving up Pick 1 for Shiel and Setterfield.ย  Too much?ย  I think that's a fair deal - I know Pick 1 is a big deal, but Setterfield was the fifth pick just a few years back and Shiel is still a very, very good player who will slot in very well alongside Cripps.

If we had Pick 1 would you do that deal, or try and pull something else off and hope it's enough so you could still take Pick 1 to the draft?

I think itโ€™s probably a bit much, maybe another sweetener added to that and itโ€™s a good deal.ย

I just canโ€™t see Carlton moving pick 1 unless itโ€™s for an insane deal.ย

I suspect they will try next years firstย

They would be crazy to do that deal.ย

Carlton need to build players to be hitting their prime in 4 years. Not bring in GWS reject over & over.ย

He's a peptide now.

Gross. Lost all respect for him.

[censored] hate those flogs. Only thing worse would've been Hawthorn I guess.

Of course, itโ€™s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. Itโ€™s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologistย  Itโ€™s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now letโ€™s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmedย the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).ย

  • CASEY: Essendon

Caseyโ€™s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckmanโ€™s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demonsโ€™ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
