Match Preview and Team Selection - Round 9

Featured Replies

I was feeling quite confident about Sunday's game until I read the Carlton Big Footy preview thread. One of their Rhode's scholar supporters doesn't rate us. He says we are "the epitomy of downhill skiers"

This would be from the epitomy of semi-literate blues fans.

Carlton are better than 1-7 and have some genuine matchwinners and i feel they match up very well on us. if we are off in the center and contested footy, they will hurt us, We wont get 83 Inside 50s this week.

Have you watched them play much this season?

Carlton are terrible, barely VFL standard skills, Essendon must be in complete disarray to lose to them: and even then the Bombers had 7 more scoring shots. Melbourne by lots.

Carlton fairly predictable with their spread, and also pressure to their backline could create a lot of opportunities for our fast little fleet. Us by 40 with no lookin's in the last quarter.  Hope Garlett gets a go again.

Dees by 37 pts - be good if that was 187

we are a lot better than 2017

The line is at 33

37 is kinda falling over it....but id take it.

We've struggled often against this vermin. Sunday will be no different imho

One of the big problems for us against the Blues recently, has been poor inside 50 entries,  where Simpson or Docherty have simply mopped up and started their attacks on goal. Docherty is out and with our 3 key forwards we now enter our 50 a bit differently and also demand a different opposition defence set up.

They should get a couple of good players in the Captain and Marchbank back, but today might lose a couple of handy brothers.

Goodwin's presser gave strong  hint that Jeffy might return which i think is great, especially against the old side, always something in that i reckon.. so it begs teh Q..who would make way for Garlett?

The curnow's will get suspended, AFL never lose an appeal, ed's defence was just ridiculous, saying he was not looking at umpire, we would best them anyway, but we need to win real big anything under 36 points is a lose. There defence is real weak, they put everything into winning last week, bombers are the fattest team.

Looks like Jack and Jeff in. That means Spargo May be rested and I would think Tyson is looking down the barrel.

No idea what will happen but I’d much rather:

Ins: Viney, Garlett

Outs: Tyson, ANB

Dees120 will defeat sCum 72

Go Dees

I like that.

I think ANBs game last week will have saved him and Goodwin likes to rest first year players after a few games.

ANB out after that game last week? Let him try to string a couple of good games together, gain a little confidence I reckon.

Isn’t this only the second time the AFL have chosen to appeal?

Give Spargo a breather. ( Not that his efforts warrant an omission). Perhaps one of the other youngsters Fritsch.

I would really like to see Garlett line up against this mob

Viney straight back in.  Goodwin says ‘playing Carlton is like playing a bottom VFL club.  The run against these magoos should get the last of the rust off.  Zurich, our wonderful sponsor, is offering a special on life insurance to any Carlscum player if they pay up (in a brown Visy bag) before the bounce’.

ambulance officers, afraid of ice addict attacks, are flooding out of Collingwood and will be on standby at the G.

Yeh well this is where we can disagree.

I didn’t view his game as anything great. A small forward who got on the end of a few thanks to the sheer number of inside 50’s we had is nothing impressive. In general play, he continues to turn the ball over, scrap kicks forward without looking or fumble the ball in the contest.

I get that Goodwin likes him, but what exactly is he providing our side that we don’t have? Apart from a large tank? It’s fine to be able to pressure the opposition. But if you turn it over yourself, your pressure acts are cancelled out.

When Garlett is in form, he is a much more valuable player. And I’d bite the bullet in a game like this and bring him in against Carlton.

I just listened to Goodys press conference and reading between the lines, I don’t think Garlett will be back yet.

Jeez he'll hopefully be hungrier than a fatty at a Big Mac party after on being on I'm Not a Celebrity Get Me OUt of Here after munging down on stick insects for a few weeks. Hungry like the wolf. Or not. In which case you have your answer. Maybe he'll kick the lights out, get some late season games kick 7 in the GF for a flag and retire. Stretch goal for JG.

Having now heard Goody’s presser, it’s  pretty clear that Garlett is close but won’t play this week.

I see it being, (and hope) Viney for Tyson.

  • PREVIEW: Collingwood

Way back in March we contemplated the possibility of a Demon resurgence after Simon Goodwin’s summer of love. Many issues at the club had seemingly been addressed, key players were returning from injury and a brand new day was about to dawn. We imagined the coach pulling a rabbit out of a hat. The team would roar up the charts, push aside every opponent and make its way to a Grand Final ending in ultimate triumph with Goody and Max holding the premiership cup aloft under a shower of red and blue ticker tape.

We’re back! That was fun. The Mighty Dees’ Season 10 campaign is off toa flying start with a commanding 48-point winover the Western Bulldogs, retaining the Hampson-Hardeman Cup in style. After a hard-fought first half in slippery conditions, the Dees came out in the second half and showcased their trademark superior class, piling on four goals in the third termand never looked back.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
