Only opened this thread to see what reason you had to say that ?

Conclusion you don't have a sensible reason - nothing to see here move on !

I’ve listened and watched him for years on the abc, started as a big fan; he knows sport, articulates well, and commentated without ego.

However, over the years, I believe ego has become more prominent, he has become nauseatingly sanctimonious to the extent, I can’t listen to him on SEN (or the podcasts). Added to this, let me tell you, (those unfamiliar with him), he has a real bias against Melbourne, I know this for a fact.  Chip on the shoulder perhaps

Agree. Used to be a fan, but it’s gone to his head.

What I'm taking away from this thread is that some people like one style of commentator and other people like a different style of commentator.

Barney, I understand that you don't like Whateley, which AFL commentators/journalists do you like?

ive read this twice and have no idea what your point is

he rated us as top 8 and now changed his mind based on our performances? and he should not have?

"When the facts change, I change my mind. What do you do, sir?"

Add me in to those who like Whately. He beats all the ex-player commentators hands down, and even if I don’t like all his opinion pieces, I can see where he is coming from. I don’t perceive any major bias.

Hell I'd say any commentator who isn't Simon Goodwin has got it wrong !

One of the few sensible comments on this thread.

I agreed with what he said.  The 4-week block (Essendon, Saints, Suns, Blues) are all must win games now, mainly because of the games we dropped in the first part of the season.  Because of our losses, especially that against Geelong, it has put extra pressure on this run of games.

How I see it - we did what we should've against Essendon, albeit in a half of footy, then against the Saints we finally played 4 reasonable quarters.  The issue for us is that we often get ahead of ourselves, so having played a decent "all round" game last week, there is that trust issue that we won't back it up.

If we win this weekend, then there's no issue, but I, possibly like Gerard, will again have us as the potential "biggest loser" going in to the Carlton game.

We have 2 more weeks to prove to the footy world that we can be trusted.

lol what a fascinating thread.

Whateley said don’t undo the good work we’ve started. Which is absolutely correct. Probably the least worthy thing to get your knickers in a knot over in the history of knicker knots.

Whatever the [censored] a bex is, have one.

Spot on.  They are asked who has "most at stake"....and although you could argue that Port and Essendon are two others, if we lose to the GC having started to establish trust, what sort of credibility do we have to make Finals?  We need to win these next 2 and set ourselves up.

As for Whateley, yes, his ego is starting to inflate a little, but he's a sensible and articulate commentator, and I'm more interested in his opinion than the majority of other lightweight journos like Jon Ralph.

Need to put 10 goals into Suns and 10 into the Blues. Minimum.

The media are like flies on a tird. Whateley is a blowfly for all I care but as for Robbo just let your imagination flow.

Mike Williamson' footy supporter type commentary.  non player type commentators. Less analysis, and more spontaneous enjoyment .

Whately comes across very articulate & respectful to his audience.  I think he resonates well with the female audience (of which I am).

Is there anyone on this website we actually like? Or is everyone a bunch of goofballs, a-holes and tossbags?

I have been Watching this moron on Foxtel, and listening to his diatribe on SEN for all of 2018.

I have also been watching him on FOXTEL in AFL360 for several years.

This year he has outgrown his own brains.

He now thinks he owns and runs the AFL.

From a guy that has not played decent football, but now thinks he is a football guru, is beyond me.

Earlier this year he stated he picked Melbourne for a Top 8.

Round 1, yes we lost a game we could have won (Against his team GEELONG)

Round 2 we won against the Lions (no comment )

Round 3  We won against the Roos (no comment)

Round 4 We lost against Hawks ( agreed a bad game ) (his comments were we couldn't make the the Top ?

Round 5 we lost against Tigers (we were with the top team for 3 1/2 quarters)

Round 6 we  demolished the bombers (no comment)

Round 7  we demolished the aints ( no comment)

Round 8 The Dees have the most to lose this weekend. ( sorry Gerard Your Precious [censored] has more to lose than us Demons)

GERARD GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSE AND START LOOKING OUT OF BOTH EYES.  (MORON No. 1)

How do you really feel, Barney? He's just one of the sensationalists, without expertise.

Well, that’s probably down to opinion.

The way I see it is that he confident, assured and articulate.  Some may see that as arrogance, and that’s fair enough.

The egocentric commentators seek to sensationalise, exaggerate, crack in jokes, make up nicknames, laugh hysterically at their own jokes and treat the viewers/listeners like they’re fools.

Basically Brian Taylor and all his ‘mates’.

Damn site better than listening to bogans on the radio!  He has a few smarts which intimidates the bogans.  Plenty of ex AFL players on radio that are poo!

Anyone bother listening to FM? Almost every station has moronic comedians every morning laughing at their own jokes and frankly make up childish non funny stuff.  I guess many have a short attention span. If you want decent radio with trained broadcasters, tune into UK radio.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
