Too true.

Melbourne has always had the potential to be a glamour side though.  Maybe its the colours, or the fact we are named after the capital city?  I dont know.

All I know is North will always be North.

Not directly about Gaff but Eagles thinking of matching Port's FA offer for Lycett.

Possibly, just a ploy to force Port into a trade.  Smart thinking by Eagles; Lycett stays or they get a decent pick they can then use as part of a Kelly trade or to trade in another ruckman.

Yes, but most of the work in the lead up is done through discussions with their manager.

Anyway, as if Norf would know who Gaff speaks to...

I think that's some of it. Melbourne has the name tied up. Despite a lack of success in my lifetime (yes, I'm over 50), it still rings as more of a 'real club' for some reason. Norf is Norf and St Kilda are St Kilda, but Melbourne is for some reason more. Just more.

I think another part is the home ground. It is after all the Melbourne CG, not the Collingwood (see I swore and got away with it) Cricket Ground, or despite what they think, the Richmond CG.

And, again despite the continuous failure, you have a decent number of supporters. Certainly more than Norf or the Saints.

They’ve won a few premierships in the past 54 years. Unlike us.

WC. I joined to discuss the Prelim (before it was played) as I find it instructive to see what real supporters are thinking. And I consider that, unlike some groups of supporters, MFC ones are generally human and worth conversing with. I try to be fair in all posts. I think that genuine support is to be admired and abuse, trolling and derision are unacceptable. I have not and will not gloat over the prelim result or the GF, even though I am ecstatic over how the team played. Nor will I shy away from my joy over season 2018.

I am aware that I am effectively a guest/visitor and it is not my place to abuse posters or the MFC.

At WC, we had a number of foreign posters, (Graham Gaunt is one from MFC I remember) who were welcome under the same rules I apply to myself. I felt that the good ones added to the site and I was happy to have them there.

As for Gaff I think that this has ended up reasonably well for both WC and Norf. WC get to keep an elite player and Norf get to keep the silly money they were offering. If he had gone to Norf it would have been a lose/lose. WC would have lost a top player and got rubbish compo and Norf would have tied up a huge part of their TPP on one player. When you add Polac and Hall to Gaff it would have been about $3mill per annum over just 3 players (1.0M+0.7M+1.3M). That is about 22% of your TPP on just 3 guys, which is madness for the rest of the list.

Good post - you're very welcome here from my POV.

I agree and was hoping for that lose-lose outcome.

And on that note.. now that the Gaff saga is over, this is moving back to the main Demonland board.

Maybe worth moving back Andy?

With Kelly wanting to get to the the Eagles, can we be the conduit to allow that to happen with pick 2??

At a basic level:

MFC trade pick 2 to WCE

WCE give us Gaff and 13

WCE trade pick 2 to GFC

Kelly lands at Eagles

West Coast need to cough up a good player to land Tim Kelly and the only way I can see it happening is to offload a similarly handy player who might see a move back east as having merit.

I understand Gaff signed long term at the end of last year on the back of a very emotional period for him but as well know it means little given the Brad Hill scenario and countless other contract backflips.

What are people’s thoughts?

is he worth pick 2 Steve, compared to the (gun) 18 year old we can take?

I only saw 3-4 Meth Coke games this year

That’s a very good question and is why added the Eagles pick 13 into the equation.

Gaff is still in his prime and we’d get 4 years of excellent value from him imv.

If we got back Pick 13 then I'd be all for it.  Pick 2 on it's own... not sure.

But I'm hoping that we are looking at a plethora of deals for Pick 2.  I have no doubt there will be numerous teams outside of GWS who will be knocking on our door about it.

Won't be happening, sounds good from our end but would anyone from the Eagles swap Gaff for Kelly? I'd say no, so there'd be no way they'd do that deal, unless Gaff changed his mind and was now desperate to return to Vic. There's nothing to suggest that West Coast need to cough up a good player to get Kelly, they have signed Nic Nat on a reduced deal and Kennedy is nearly finished so his wage has dropped, they might lose a few fringe players, like the tigers have over the last few years but don't need to move on any of their god players to make it happen - unfortunately because the above has merit from our end.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
