I keep hearing that Brayshaw is a teenager.  His age in this incident is completely irrelevant.

He was. When he came to the bench you could see him pointing to it and they almost didn't want to take it out as it was obviously keeping the teeth in place. Makes me feel sick thinking about it!

It's a tough situation. I'd firstly be concerned about my brothers health.

We also have to remember this wasn't some random bloke. It was a fellow player who has been held in high regard throughout his career as model pro and good guy. I'm sure Angus, Andrew and Hamish would all look at the situation differently to how we do because it's a unique one to them.

If Andrew Brayshaw accepts Gaff's apology than it's over as far as i am concerned.

It would have made no difference to this actual game, but what if someone did that to Oliver in the first minutes of a GF? Would you want that player to keep playing while we were down one? 

There has to be some sort of system to deal with these unusually awful incident in game. 

The red card system needs to be balanced. You can't have players being red carded because they accidentally bumped someone in the head and that guy is off for the game because of concussion. It needs to be done only for purposeful or terrible acts within a game (Gaff, Hall, Cameron and Bugg) and not for incidents like let's say the tackle on J. Smith on the weekend. However, knowing the AFL it will become a big controversy within a week of it being implemented.

So you and the media as well are going to stick the responsibility on an 18 year old kid. Can you imagine the pressure that will be brought to bear on him to achieve just the outcome you have posited.

Gaff was so obviously in shock after it happened that I doubt he has any understanding of how and why it happened. Purely a subconscious reflex act but no excusing it and requires a big penalty. Chances are he was not in a good mental space going into the game and snapped and I hope he seeks help.

He is under 0 pressure to accept an apology. He has the entire football world on his side and if he said no sorry i don't accept the apology than that's fine.

I agree, but by the law of the land ,there are people doing time for öne punch "actions and are vilified as such. The same principles should apply to sports people who do not discipline themselves and in a moment of "madness" change their own life and the victims . I have no doubt that Andrew Gaff would do things differently if he had thought things through.

From the looks of this photo, the mouth guard has done its job and the lower jaw which is not covered by the mouth guard has been broken.

Teeth involved in the fracture line (apparently) have been removed.

It’s a shocking injury and I think that’s why some people (but not others) become slightly emotional

@Bobby McKenzie I have just read every one of @McQueen's posts on the topic. You made this up. In fact he specifically states he does not condone the actions.

I'm firmly in the camp that if you intentionally hit or strike a player, no matter how hard then a suspension should be enforced (as a starting point) and not just a fine.  Additional weeks are then added for any injuries sustained as a result.

Exactly.  This isn't a crude spoiling attempt or a mistimed bump executed at 30km per hour.  We're aren't talking body on body bumping or pushing. 

We are talking about deliberate strikes,  irrespective of to the body or head, that are designed to hurt, intimidate, incapacitate and have no other relation to the game. 

Hawkins on Fritsch. Rance on Watts. Steele on Oliver.  None of these acts were football related and if they are accepted, it isn't surprising that occasionally one of these goes horribly wrong. 

These guys are peak physical specimens, taught to play on instinct and aggression, making split second decisions rather than pausing to assess consequences. It is a fine line between a pec bruise and a broken jaw.

The problem is the act not the outcome. And the act should be punished regardless of how bad the impact is.

Has anyone noticed Gaff placing his right arm behind Brayshaw’s back/shoulder right before the hit? 

Didn’t leave Brayshaw much room to manoeuvre even if he saw the hit coming. IMO this was a deliberate act to hurt him in some way.

I've been saying this for a while. It's been brewing all year with all of the off the ball aggression we've seen. Umpires and officials have just let it go and it's only inevitable that it will get out of control. I said at the time, if fans see all of this and it's deemed ok, then fans will think it's ok for them, and that's what will trigger crowd aggression, leading to violence.

You can probably add to that the umpire bias towards the WCE at home, and Gaff subconsciously thought he'd just get away with it.

Enough is enough. Start paying the free kicks, and start suspending players for these off the ball jabs etc.

I can tell you where it all started getting out of control as well. Richmond last year came out at the start of every game swinging. They were allowed to do it and ended up with a flag. It's a free for all now, unless you're Clayton Oliver of course.

Poor Kid, no mother should see her son looking like this, especially as a result of playing a football game.  Totally unnecessary with long lasting consequences, for both Andrew and his Mum.
