If they’re willing to offer that, he’s staying an Eagle. It basically means they will match our deal and we’ll have to trade for him. We have nothing of value in terms of picks we can trade, and I doubt we’d be willing to trade any of our guns to acquire him, so game over.

This sort of offer to me screams that they know McGovern is leaving

The issue McGovern has with the contract they’ve offered him isn’t the $ but the length, he apparently wants an extra year. I think the Eagles will cave and give him the extra year, he also recently started a part-time sales director job and has a weekly TV gig. I can’t see him leaving but who knows.

So they keep Gov and drive up the price of Gaff to maximise compensation when he leaves

I agree. Once it (prospect of getting Gaff) becomes a likely trade scenario it loses its appeal. At present we have nothing to offer. That may change. I tend to give the club the benefit of the doubt in that if we do make a play for Gaff, and decide to trade for him, that we will be offloading some players who could get us some picks. Don't forget, whoever orchestrated the picks swap with GC that ended up landing us Oliver, those people are (highly likely) still at the club, so if they decide to trade for Gaff, I would trust they will make it happen. I completely sat on the fence in relation to the Watts deal that landed us Fritsch, but whoever it was knew what they were doing. If we make a play for Gaff I'd back the mind trust.

So I guess by that logic we wouldn’t have wanted buddy or danger either, even the best players have bad games. We should be so lucky as to get Gaff

He's had more disposals and laid more tackles than anyone on his team thus far tonight. He's no longer a purely outside player, and is winning his own ball in a team getting smashed. Not having a great game by any stretch, but he works so hard and would give us something we sorely lack through our midfield.

He has a more suitable head for radio I reckon.

28 disposals and six score involvements to 3/4 time.

He had 9 touches in the last term.  He was one of their only players not to go missing.  At least try and do a bit of research before you're wrong.  Again.

Yeah lets pass on the All Australian and Best and Fairest winner whos played in a Grand Final and instead cross our fingers that Stretch or Balic become really, really good.

37 disposals, 7 score involvements, 7 tackles, 1 goal. Probably BOG again.

On 2018 form he'd be our best midfielder at present. If we can afford him, we'd be mental not to go hard for him. Exactly what we need!

He wouldn't be better than Oliver. Different players but not close to Oliver in terms of impact. Gaff is a bit of a seagull.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
