The days of the 'workers and silvertail clubs' and suburban rivalry  are long gone, I live in the Collingwood annexe to East Melbourne, but can't quite carry off the man bun with my luxuriant solver lockd

The clubs are a business, get the right people in and the business thrives, a bit of on field success helps

'Employee' movement is also part of this new look, hands up who hasn't changed jobs for more money, success, not feeling appreciated etc etc

Jack Watts kicks 6, Howe takes a hanger etc, who cares, not me, they are not with MFC anymore

I have never questioned that the clubs are not a business now. Players get paid

but the game of Australian Rules Football is not what it was, and i consider that a shame. 

It has always been popular to the extreme because of it’s differences. These differences should be promoted, not diluted

The people who run the AFL are mere custodians of the game for a short while, are driven now to change the game yearly, so we have something that is vastly different to what it was

AFLX will become a hybrid Soccer Competition, is that necessary?

    Compete in a global market? lol. Nobody cares about the game outside of Australia and that's why it is such a sacred and special game given the popularity of it in our home country. I think you mean nationally, we are competing with soccer, which is a global game?

    The only reason the AFL continue to 'Americanise' the game is to make it more attractive globally and because $$$. As Australians, we kiss so much US dick it's disgusting.

    Absolutely 100% If AFLX is the long term future of the game, i will be glad to be Six Feet Under. 

    The main problem with the AFL now is that they give the game no time to breath, 2-3 rule changes are enforced at the same time and we have to live with it. 

    But the main modern rule that has changed the game the most, interchange rotations remains. 

    It is still a “good” game, but when CHF’s and CHB’s went into battle for an afternoon, that was Aussie Rules as a highly original and tough game

    Probably when about 100 cameras are trained on the ground with an AI engine continually analysing all the video, thereby eliminating human umpires entirely.

    Forget about outside run No 29 CAN achieve that in spades on a wing... And we should still have an excellent finisher!! Would Watts have missed the gimme Bugg fudged in the first quarter??

    Should still be  DEE but isn't it a fascinating season to unfold for DEES and Port Adelaide!

    I am an avid reader of newspapers including those circulating in the UK and SE Asia

    Have never seen an article on AFL.

    In fact the only place I have ever seen it in Asia is the sports bars in Kuta which is not exactly "overseas" if you get my drift.

    BTW ... it does not even get  a guernsey on the main pay TV Sports channels in Asia but rather it is low definition on the Australia channel which doesn't exactly rate its socks off and is promoted as a lifestyle channel.

    Promoting AFL overseas makes the AFL feel big and important. But they would be better off getting clubs out of debt and improving all training facilities, so all clubs  are on an even base when any recruits are drafted in.

    Expat Sports Bars are the only places (and they are great) but this bullsh!t about growing the game international is a joke.

    Watts kicks 6?  Who cares.  In fact, he is building Port up for the disappointment in the real season.  He can be the March Coleman medallist.

    Hes a likeable enough bloke but I"m afraid that if he goes gangbusters this year I will feel a tad shortchanged and feel like he didnt do enough for Melbourne.

    Catch 22 for me.

    Best to just move on and accept that he will be pretty much the same player except when he plays his old team and  like the rest of them seem to do .... kick a huge bag. Just the way it is. I do hope we that  don't treat him like Scully though.

    If he starts getting a few kicks during the season someone will clip him around the ear and that folks, will be that.
    Be hearing footsteps, ducking his head and dropping sitters for the rest of the year.

    But it's geographic

    The AFL are trying to make it more wudespread, you do get highlights on a lot of news service

    Watts may conceivably win the Brownlow, win the Norm Smith Medal and the Coleman medal with Port Adelaide this year. All that matters though, is whether he would have performed to that standard if he had stayed with us. The evidence to date suggests that he would not. Hence, the club decided it was time for him to move on. Will I feel shortchanged if he stars for PA? Maybe, but my chagrin will be not for trading him, but for woefully mismanaging him in the early years.

    Geez a second or third key forward who can kick 6 goals and give off a few would be handy if Tom McDonalds foot injury keeps him out for an extended period...

    I said it when we traded him and I see no reason to change, it was a silly decision to trade away a talented player capable of playing as a second or third forward when our KPF stocks are so thin. We are now down to Hogan and Pederson for round one, any bad luck with injury or suspension and we will be forced to play Weiderman or Smith. I hope those guys play as well as Jack will for Port or we’ll look very, very silly.....

    Watts kicks 6 goals in a JLT community game and the posters who wanted to keep him use this as a ‘I told you so’. Wow wee.

      As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.

      Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide.       There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

      Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors.
