They'd already started going monthly last year I believe so this was on the cards. I wasn't a regular reader but was always good for a flick through but with the amount of online blogs etc these days it became a bit redundant.

The iconic footynewspaper is gone.

In its later years, it belonged to SEN so my guess is that the paper is losing money and that this is Hutchy's doing.

It became a glad-rag for the 'trendy' teams ... never purchased a copy but saw hundreds of free copies on the grounds around the MCG after the match on the way to the carpark. Seems as though those who had paid for a copy were unimpressed, too.

It was clearly losing money with you as half their subscription base.  Many publications have folded in the last few years with information readily available on the net.

It's the future of print media alas. Newspapers are going down the same route, even Rupert's fish wrappers.

No more Inside Football player ratings from games? That's no good, found that to be a really helpful resource.

I was a regular reader.  Lot's of very good analysis and the annual draft special was a must read for draft geeks like me.

Unfortunately IF gone the way of much of quality print media.

Likely Hutchy's call, but writing was probably on the wall already.

I realised I was still paying $30 a month for my digital and paper delivery subscription to The Australia. Totally forgot about it. Someone must be pinching my paper.

Can't cancel online. Had to call.

"So you want to cancel?"

"Yes"

"Okay so you want to cancel..."

"Yes..."

"Okay so if you want to cancel what I can do is drop the price to $15 for the next 2 months."

"No thanks I'd like to cancel"

"Okay okay fair enough...so you'd like to cancel..."

"Yes please"

"So i can offer you $8 for the next 3 months."

"I'd really just like to cancel."

"Okay sure. Can I ask why?"

This is literally how the conversation went. After a few more minutes it was finally cancelled.

They are desperate. Digital or print. He simply did not want to cancel.

Over recent years, I have reduced expenditures that rather rapidly became either unnecessary or redundant from many such 'subscriptions, memberships, associations and/or services' without once missing or regretting such cancellations to prior folly. The processes and interrogations that you provide in these experiences were not merely yours. Each proved to be horribly complicated, actually resistant and contrary to my initial cancellation requests.

I now save about $200 per month on these former superficialities to life by getting on with exactly that: life.

With the MFC, I call the Membership department when I have a query or request and find that on many occasions, the same dogma tends to apply.

This is particularly evident in attempting to utilise my annual 3 x complimentary MFC Members seats when I can get to the MCG for a match (in my case, that is after an interstate journey to get there). I am given an 'exclusive' offer of Ticketeck allocated seats instead, at $75 per seat. My wife and son are both members as well so if we all go to the footy, it's $225 for seats that the MFC would prefer us to obtain - over and above the MFC allocated seats in the bleaches that must comprise most of our membership fees. I therefore think that other than Club loyalties, and similar sentiments that work for the benefit of the Club, MFC Membership is rapidly becoming another 'unnecessary' folly. Is this the experience of others?

Your mistake DM is to think of the MFC as a service centre. They are there to sell you something. Call centres have daily targets and a pre defined message. MFC is little if at all different.

Your friend is a forum like this where you can sift through the advice and work it out for yourself.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
