Oliver accepted a $1500 penalty for something that happened with Jacobs.

I didn't see it - anyone know?

ps - should have been given a bonus of $1500....

    Was Jacobs tagging him? Probably a cheeky jabs to the guts or something similar.

    Jacobs  tags very close and plays dirty, sneaky because he lacks skill. However,  whatever  Clarry did to deserve a $1500 misconduct, good on him.

    l hope Jacobs copped his right wack from Clarry.

    He's going to have to be careful in the future - these hard tags will come his way more and more and he'll need to learn to keep his temper in check and not get himself in to trouble.  He's too valuable to the team to be doing that.

    I was actually worried Salem (yet again) might have had a case to answer for in the 3rd qtr.

    Gave a free kick away with an elbow to the head after a centre bounce but he was in possession of the ball.

    An AFLW player copped a week for something similar recently.

    The AFLW played jumped up and put the elbow out prior to being tackled. Salem was bracing for contact and had the North player run in to his elbow, it shouldn't have been a free kick.

    Like others have said I like the feistiness and the mongrel but he has to learn to keep his temper in check. I'm more worried that these hard tags will be increasingly used to put him off his game.

    Clayton Oliver, Melbourne, has been charged with misconduct against Ben Jacobs, North Melbourne, during the first quarter of Saturday’s JLT match between Melbourne and North Melbourne, played at Hobart on Saturday February 24, 2018.

    In summary, he can accept a $1500 sanction without appearing before the Tribunal.

    Based on the available video evidence and a medical report from the North Melbourne Football Club, the incident was assessed as misconduct. A first offence for misconduct draws a $2500 sanction at the discretion of the Match Review Officer. The player can accept a $1500 sanction with an early plea.

    A player remains eligible for the Brownlow Medal under the following circumstances:

    • if he is suspended during the finals or pre-season;
    • if he serves a suspension in the current season which was earned for an offence committed late in the previous season;
    • he receives any sort of club-imposed suspension which is not recognised by the AFL Tribunal;
    • if he is found guilty by the AFL Tribunal of an offence which attracts only a financial penalty.

    I hope we'd get rid of all high contact being a free, it's lazy umpiring. So often the duckers are rewarded. There was a few nice occasions both ways on Saturday when the umps yelled 'play on ducked' and even an holding the ball against a North ducker. In this case Salem had the ball, a high fend is a free kick, but I don't think that's what Salem did. What he did was the equivalent of a forward raising a knee in a marking contest which I'm fine with. If in doubt, I'd always lean towards the guy with the ball rather than a tackler.

    I love that he's an angry kid, but he needs to really learn to control how he reacts to taggers, because the least helpful thing he can do for the team is get suspended. 

    We need him in the side, and he should take tagging as flattery and another challenge he needs to overcome, not as an excuses to release his frustrations.

    He is treading a fine line, and until he gains Hodge like status, the MRP and umpires will continue to punish him for every little indiscretion.

    He needs to win the Brownlow first then he can go around chicken winging, elbowing and eye gouging people without repercussions

    He was still the highest possession winning midfielder on the ground.  He may not be worth the trouble of tagging if he keeps racking up the stats like that...

    True, but they'll send someone just to get under his skin if they see him losing his temper when he's tagged.  But yes, hopefully a tag means little and they give up on it once they realise he still has a big influence on the game regardless.

    But what did he do that was deemed to be 'misconduct'?   Very odd that the MRP doesn't say what the incident was.

    'Misconduct'.  Maybe it is a new catch-all charge when they want to fine somebody! 

    He needs to watch out.  Two or Three fines like that and he gets a week on the bench.

      A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. It’s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this year’s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.
