Unless Wines is willing to come back to Victoria for less money, there's no way he'll come here.

Our list strategy has been pretty clear for the past 4 years. Draft and develop from within, trade for needs.

As much as Wines would walk into our midfield, we can do without him and we have more pressing needs, such as securing a plethora of young guns to long term deals.

Agreed if true. Have no idea if we are making a play, but regardless, hating a club for not picking his son is plain stupid and not in his son's best interests

I still hate our club for not picking him and I'm not even related to Ollie.

One of the worst decisions we ever made and that’s saying something considering some of the choices we have made.

If Port had of had the selection before us they would also have selected (South Australian) Toumpas (leaving us with Wines) as that was clearly the ranking at that stage. Whilst we knew the type of player Wines was, I suspect we envisaged that Toumpas was destined to be Robbie Flower reincarnated and that we had pulled off a coup. Things don’t always turn out as scripted! ?

I think this year may reveal a few list suprises that could cover for this supposed dire need for outside run too.

If port implodes and misses finals, and we get in and at least win week one, we could be a preferred landing spot for wines.

I think if it's money he wants he will go to norf..

No one wants to go to north no matter how much money they throw, they offered martin and Kelly heaps but got neither. I think port have given him a low ball offer, there are too many players on big money there,  player's like Hamish hartlett are on huge amounts and they don't want to go, they regretted paying him so much 1 year later.

Not even close to the worst decision made by MFC over the last decade.

I was at the Swans V Port game. Jeez this kid can play.

Would we take him if he came to us before the end of the season and said he wanted to play with and for the Vineys.

I guess with Clarry and a fit Viney we don't really need him. Other great teams have had threesomes. Briso's great trifecta, Eagles when Judd was still there, Cats have gone that way this year. I'd take him if we could.

Problem is it can't happen without some major trading of players.  We don't have a first rounder this year and will have to use next year's in the draft so we couldn't nab him anyway. But if we could what a midfield it would be.

I really liked Dom  Barrys' game yesterday was clean, hard at it and was effecive as a link man on a number offorays forward

Can someone remind me of why he was cleared?

He chose to leave for cultural reasons didn’t he? Pretty sure we wanted to keep him and he’d recently signed a contract extension

This is exactly correct and I recall thinking at the time that his departure was very close to the signing of an extended contract. He will probably become a very good player.

It’s doubly annoying we lost him for nothing as he was part of the Scully compensation....got that pace and ball carrying ability we need but I suppose it’s ancient history in footy terms

We had Ollie and was to join Melbourne  at pick 4 and to be with his close mate in Jack Viney. GWS had the first 3 picks in the National Draft and Melbourne  had pick no 4.which  came from GWS   for an uncontracted player compensation pick, that happened to be for Scully. Toumpas was to be picked up early and fell through to pick 4. Todd Viney and co decided to pick Toumpas ahead of  Ollie  and he slipped through to Pick 7.

Note! After picking Toumpas at 4 the next pick at 5 was Jake Stringer,   WHAT IF?  GOD HELP US !

Scilly was not a bad pick he just left for money, can't say he was a bad pick

$cully was an ordinary pick. He is small and chip kicks everywhere. He has great endurance which has come back into favour given the restrictions on interchange but oterwise he was an ordinary number 1 pick.

If we were picking today with our current recruiting team between Oliver, Wines and $cully, $cully would be a distant third

HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
