I don't get that people cannot see that this is not true. I can think of at least 3 goals he has kicked - and his last one against Collingwood was at least 40-45m out and went through above head hight... check out this clip here for evidence (1.05 mark) I'd almost argue he has a larger kicking range than Hogan. Personally I think it's come from 2 kicks in particular. Both kicks were shanks after gut running efforts where he was totally stuffed. 1 of those ended with a tackle and holding the ball free, but then he was called to play on for no reason and put under more pressure. I remember thinking at the time he's going to get crucified on here for that, regardless of the circumstances. I can't recall the games sorry. 2 1 Quote

Clearly enough to warrant 18 games in the one's. Agreed he needs time in the two's to find form again but to say at 19 years of age he is a list clogger who has never dominated at Casy is WAY off the mark 5 1 Quote

I take back the 30 metre bit. But still I feel kicking is a major limitation in his game as 40- 45 is prob the top of his range... and not 40- 45 low and hard either . If he had to kick over someone on the mark he couldnt kick it from 40-45 1 Quote

Redleg 42,156 Posted July 7, 2019 Posted July 7, 2019 Think Charlie is suffering the 2nd year Blues, which is quite common in the AFL. Also playing in a down on confidence, undermanned side, this year. Quote

Short, not a goal kicker rarely gets his feet off the ground when marking, rarely exceeds 35 metres when kicking. Have I missed something? Quote

Sorry kids 635 Posted July 7, 2019 Posted July 7, 2019 Quote As a Junior played as an inside mid. Forget the term mid, he is a small rover without the pace to go with it. We play him as a forward. Strange choice indeed. Always a risk when we could not afford a risk. And if you do risk, go for someone with a huge upside or X factor. Quote

Beetle 4,739 Posted July 7, 2019 Posted July 7, 2019 Man he cops a battering on here but think there is a place for him in this side. Granted he’s out of form and possesses physical attributes that on the surface limits his ability in the modern game, however I saw enough last year to believe he can make it. Pace/size of course is his biggest limitation but I think he has the footy smarts and ingrained competitive nature to help him along. Lets keep in mind he is a 19 year old kid who was playing in a Prelim final side last year compared to a 16th position performing side this year, which hasn’t helped his development. 4 1 Quote
Roger Mellie 4,205 Posted July 7, 2019 Posted July 7, 2019 He's playing like he reads Demonland. If that wouldn't give you second year blues nothing would. He's a smart operator who is badly out of form and low on confidence. I agree his size goes against him and he's not that quick, but some of the rabbits he pulled out of the hat last year that resulted in goals was quite gobsmacking for a kid. 1 Quote
Bring-Back-Powell 15,548 Posted July 7, 2019 Posted July 7, 2019 Anyone who kicks 2 goals in a Friday night high pressure, high stakes AFL semi final must have some sort of talent and AFL capabilities. Having a really poor second season but let’s not write him off yet. 1 Quote
poita 3,944 Posted July 8, 2019 Posted July 8, 2019 I don't rate Spargo, but there are two significant issues here: 1. We have so many players who show glimpses at AFL level, but drop away completely for the next 2-3 weeks when they head back to the VFL. Spargo should be dominating at that level from week one if he is going to be a decent AFL player. We need to look at how we manage players when they are dropped from the senior team. 2. Spargo has been tried over and over again as a small forward at AFL and VFL level this year, and it is simply not working. Try him in defence, try him in the middle, play him as a tagger, just do something different to break the cycle. Ideally let him get some cheap touches across half back and build his confidence back up. Quote
Roost It 1,434 Posted July 8, 2019 Posted July 8, 2019 I don’t rate him as yet. However he has another 2 years to find himself a position in the best 22. I hope he makes it. Quote
YesitwasaWin4theAges 6,823 Posted July 8, 2019 Posted July 8, 2019 I'm going to back the kid in for next year, second year blues can happen to the best of us. I think most of our list are on holidays in their minds. Wouldn't hurt if the young fella broke his duck in the female department, might loosen him up a bit. He has lost bucket loads of confidence this year, along with a few others on our list. 1 Quote
Dee Watcher 71 Posted July 8, 2019 Posted July 8, 2019 For all his shortcomings he was pretty good last year so don't think we can write of a young bloke who played a big role for us last year. In reality we've got a number of blokes who are having down years so to target Spargo seems a bit harsh when questions about list management/injuries/coaching are probably more important than questioning a 19 year old kid who should continue to develop after playing 18 games in his debut season! 1 Quote
