Rather than derail the 2018 Fixture Thread,  I thought it best to post up an idea for an 'ideal' fixture here.  It didn't take as long as I thought but it was a tricky exercise all the same.

There will be the odd error and feasibility issue but the gist of the idea is to highlight how we could be so much better off with a better fixture.

12 wins this past season should have seen us get a better deal but it looks like we're going to have to be a dominant team in order to get noticed.

Anyway,  here it is ...

Further to the @Dr. Gonzo idea of involving the 3 smaller clubs in Victoria in a bloc to get a better deal with the AFL,  the club could take it a step further and approach all the Victorian clubs with regards to cementing the games we play against those clubs into being free-to-air games on a regular basis.  Home then Away (the following season) would apply to the Victorian teams that we only play once a season (except for the QB clash)

A mock fixture for next season could look as follows ... all the highlighted games to be on free-to-air.

Round 1 @ Geelong (7.30pm Friday) ... a reciprocal rights game

Round 2 vs Carlton MCG (7.30pm Saturday)

Round 3 @ Brisbane (1.10pm Saturday)

Round 4 vs Essendon MCG (7.30pm Friday)

Round 5 @ Gold Coast (1.10pm Saturday)

5 day break ... but the Tigers to also only get a 5 day break

Round 6 @ Richmond MCG (7.30pm Wednesday)

10 day break

Round 7 @ Port Adelaide (1.10pm Saturday)

Round 8 vs St Kilda MCG (7.30pm Saturday)

Round 9 @ Western Bulldogs Docklands (7.30pm Friday)

Round 10 vs Fremantle Darwin (7.30pm Saturday)

Round 11 Bye

Round 12 vs Collingwood MCG (3.20pm Monday)

Round 13 vs Geelong MCG (3.20pm Sunday)

Round 14 @ North Melbourne MCG (3.20pm Sunday)

Round 15 @ Carlton MCG (3.20pm Sunday)

Round 16 vs Adelaide Alice Springs (1.10 Saturday)

Round 17 vs Gold Coast MCG (2.10pm Saturday)

Round 18 @ Fremantle (4.45pm Sunday)

Round 19 vs Sydney MCG (7.30 Saturday)

Round 20 vs Hawthorn MCG (7.30pm Friday)

Round 21 @ West Coast (4.45 Saturday)

Round 22 @ St Kilda MCG (3.20pm Sunday)

Round 23 vs GWS MCG

Highlights include ...

  • Only 6 x six day breaks
  • 4 Friday Night Games - Free-to-Air
  • 4 Saturday Night Games - Free-to-Air
  • 4 Sunday 3.20pm Games - Free-to-Air
  • 1 Monday QB clash - Free-to-Air
  • 1 Wednesday Night ANZAC eve clash - Free-to-Air
  • 14 games in total on Free-to-Air
  • A bye after the Darwin game
  • Double up games against the Cats,  Suns,  Blues,  Freo & Saints.
  • All our games against the Victorian clubs to be on Free-to-Air.
  • 2 Northern Territory games but only 3 other home games in Victoria against interstate teams.
  • We still have 5 other interstate games (I did try and reduce it to 4) but this is offset by having 6 home games against Victorian teams (all 6 on free-to-air)
  • 13 games at the MCG and only 1 at the Docklands
  • Shocked 1

Wouldnt an ideal fixture be 23 home games at the MCG with a mixture of Friday night, Saturday arvo and Saturday night games?

No Sundays, no away games.

That would be "Ideal"

:P

I like the way you think. It means we at least see one final. :)

love the idea of making up a fixture, but there is no way you'd want to face the tigers coming off a five day break and a trip back from the gold coast

so much of it depends on where you finish and which 'band' other teams around you fall into

but say miracles of miracles happen and we actually won the flag next year beating, say, geelong, with the ladder at end of season as follows:

  1. melbourne
  2. geelong
  3. richmond
  4. port
  5. gw$
  6. swans
  7. footscray
  8. crows
  9. peptides
  10. fremantle
  11. meth coke
  12. hawthorn
  13. collingwood
  14. st. kilda
  15. lions
  16. north
  17. gc17
  18. carlton

now let's say we get double games against:

  • top band: geelong, port
  • middle band: adelaide crows, hawthorn
  • bottom band: brisbane lions

that'd mean a fixture could look like this, using basically the same structure as you:

Round 1 @ Geelong MCG (7.50pm Friday) ... a reciprocal rights game

Round 2 vs Port Adelaide MCG (2.10pm Saturday) ... a reciprocal rights game

Round 3 @ Brisbane Lions Gabba (4.35pm Saturday) ... a reciprocal rights game

Round 4 @ Hawthorn MCG (7.50pm Friday) ... a reciprocal rights game

Round 5 vs Peptides Docklands (1.45pm Saturday)

5 day break ... but the Tigers to also only get a 5 and a half day break, having played the night before against the pies

Round 6 @ Richmond MCG (7.25pm Wednesday)

10 day break

Round 7 @ Port Adelaide Adelaide Oval (7.50pm Friday) ... a reciprocal rights game

Round 8 vs St Kilda MCG (7.25pm Saturday)

Round 9 @ Footscray Docklands (7.50pm Friday)

Round 10 vs Fremantle Darwin (7.20pm Saturday)

Round 11 Bye

Round 12 vs Collingwood MCG (3.20pm Monday)

Round 13 vs Geelong Kardinia Park (3.20pm Sunday)

Round 14 @ North Melbourne Docklands (4.40pm Sunday)

Round 15 @ GC17 Carrara (1.10pm Sunday)

Round 16 @ Carlton MCG (3.20pm Sunday)

Round 17 vs Adelaide Crows Alice Springs (1.45 Saturday)  ... a reciprocal rights game

Round 18 vs Brisbane Lions MCG (2.10pm Saturday) ... a reciprocal rights game

Round 19 @ Meth Coke Perth Oval (7.25pm Saturday)

Round 20 vs Sydney MCG (2.10 Saturday)

Round 21 vs Hawthorn MCG (7.25pm Saturday) ... a reciprocal rights game

Round 22 @ Adelaide Crows Adelaide Oval (4.40 Saturday)  ... a reciprocal rights game

Round 23 vs GW$ MCG (time tbd)

i wonder, however, whether we could play that late in alice / that early in darwin; usually the timings around both are reversed

locations:

  • 11 games at the mcg
  • 4 games at docklands
  • 2 games in the nt
  • 2 games at adelaide oval
  • 1 games at perth stadium
  • 1 game at the gabba
  • 1 game at carrara

times:

  • 9 day games
  • 9 night games
  • 3 twilight
  • 1 tbd

Not enough Richmond.

I like the idea of playing interstate in the final round while the AFL insist on a break before the finals.

Landing the helicopter at Yarra park is becoming more difficult.

The public transport from Mansfield is too difficult and would take around 4 hours each way.

Can't you drive to a station a bit closer in and skip the traffic.

Nearest station 70km away. Not all trains stop there. 120km to a major station, still about a 4 hour trip.  2.5 by car, that makes Fridays a late night.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
