We kick off the Blast from the Past series with South Australian midfielder/wing Andrew Obst. Debuting in 1990, Andrew played 149 games for the Dees finishing 3rd in the 1996 Best and Fairest before retiring at the end of 1997.

Good Player "Fruit" Tough as nails

Seriously good player. From memory the suspension that cost him the opportunity to play 150 games was just ridiculous.

Jayden Hunt is Obst 2.0

Anyone know what Obst is doing now?

I was a huge fan. Never really famous and often not given the kudos he deserved. Great post.

Really?

Cant see it myself.

I loved him as a player, seemed to have time and space and clean hands and looking at that clip he plays better than Hunt! But that is just one play so you can't make a real comparison. Hopefully Hunt keeps on improving, he potentially has more weapons.

Yes, it was a late spoil on a west coast player. The type of thing that happens every game. Ridiculous he even got suspended, let alone 2 weeks.

I reckon it was also russell robertson's first game.

Very good player and yes has great similarities to Hunt.

I think he lives in Adelaide these days.

Good player but had a real inconsistant streak about him though. Played well in big matches.

He reminds me of Andrew Obst.....

Both wore 29 for a time but that's where the similarities end for me. Light coloured hair?

I remember Obst being tougher than his frame suggested he should be, not quick, with a high propensity to favour handballs over kicks for his time and a good decision maker who brought teammates into the play. Good solid player, Tyson is about the closest I can think of in the current team although there's no great match.

Hunt is significantly quicker, way better in the air and way worse with decisions and foot skills.

I was just going to write that Jayden Hunt similiarity. Loved his tenacious play. Rightly in the 150 heroes book.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
